After being designated for assignment last Saturday, the Yankees traded the 26-year-old right-hander to the Pirates today.
In 2008 Hacker went 9-6, with a 2.43 ERA, 115 strikeouts and 37 walks for Tampa and Trenton. So far this season, he was 1-1, with a 4.11 ERA in three starts for Trenton, and 0-1, with a 7.88 ERA in three starts for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
UPDATE 5:25 p.m.: In return for Hacker the Yankees received right-hander reliever Romulo Sanchez. In ten games for Indianapolis this year he was 1-0, with a 4.38 ERA, and in 12.1 IP he's struck out 15 and walked 5. Last season he went 5-1, with a 3.46 ERA in 33 games. He's pitched in 26 games at the big league level in '07 and '08, and he's 1-0 with a 4.60 ERA.
The 25-year-old was named the Pirates 25th best prospect by Baseball America this year. He throws a fastball that sits at 92-94 MPH and can hit 98, and he has a good curveball.

This seems like a fine move to me. Hacker is obviously too old to be at A/AA, and since he is 26 now and struggling at AAA, I don't see how he could at all impact the team this year or in the future.
And regardless of Sanchez's ERA, it seems like he can get some Ks, which often prompts a big league callup.
How many Yankee relievers can you think of that have ERAs under 4.60? Mo, Aceves......umm...
I agree.
Terrible trade why would you trade Eric Hacker for Humberto Sanchez version 2.
Anon, How is he Humberto Sanchez 2?
And how is trading Hacker a big deal?
I'd rather see Sanchez pitching a relatively unimportant 7th inning than Hacker getting the starting nod.
“Keep an eye on (Eric) Hacker,” he said. “It’s 95 and he does it easy. Very impressive.” - Jorge Posada
Did Jorge also call Phil Hughes a baby Roger Clemens?
Our pen sucks. Girardi/Cash need to demote Veras. This guy stinks. I like Coke, but hes was awful today.
You can't demote Veras, you can only release him.
Greg, don't hate on Hughes.
Jorge is wrong in that Hacker throws easy 95, since it's more low 90s. Hughes is nice.
I'm not hating on Hughes, but he's nothing like a baby Roger Clemens.
