News & Notes
- Brett Tomko has been called up and to make room on the roster David Robertson has been sent down. Robertson had a 3.86 ERA in five games for the Yankees. Tomko has been dominating down in Triple-A, posting 0.64 ERA in ten games, and he has allowed 1 run on eight hits, walked 4, and struck out 17 in 14 IP. To make room on the 40-man roster, Eric Hacker was designated for assignment.
- Phil Hughes has started against Baltimore three times in his career, and is 1-1, with a 5.06 ERA. One of the game was at Camden Yards last season and he got hammered, allowing five runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out just one over 5.1 innings.
- Adam Eaton has made two starts against the Yankees in his career and he's 1-1, with a 4.22 ERA. He hasn't faced the Yankees since 2006.
- Brian Bruney played catch again today and did not experience any discomfort. He will play catch again from 90 feet on Monday. It he feels fine after that the Yankees can then stat planning bullpen sessions. The Yankees don't expect him back until June.
- I answered some questions about the Yankees for Mark over at Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove. You can check out the post here.
- Not Yankee related, but if you're a baseball fan you should be interested in Steve Strasburg. He's the San Diego State ace right-hander who many are saying has some of the best stuff they've ever seen and could be the best college pitcher of all-time. Here's his line so far this season: 11-0, 1.24 ERA, 87.1 innings, 48 hits, 17 walks, 164 strikeouts. He throws a 95-99 MPH, and occasionally tops out at 101, he also throws a slider and a changeup. At one point this season he struck out 23 batters in one game. The guy is ridiculous and will obviously be the no. 1 pick in this year's draft. If you're wondering the pick belongs to the Nationals. People are saying that Scott Boras (his agent) will ask for a gigantic signing bonus, somewhere near $50 million.
Last night he threw his first career no-hitter against Air Force, striking out 17 along the way. He allowed two baserunners on walks, and threw 116 pitches. According to people who saw the game he was throwing 99 all night and hit 101.

What is the 40 man move to make room for Tomko?
strasburg is a waste on a team like the nats.
You're probably right anon.
SW, Eric Hacker was designated for assignment.
Wow, what a stupid play by Swisher. I guess the Yankees had their one day in the sun and now they're back to being terrible.
That play was awful on so many levels.
Hughes sucks..... you know what this whole fucking team sucks.
This is why they say momentum is only as good as tomorrow's starting pitcher.
I can't watch this anymore. Thank goodness I have to go to dinner now. Try and enjoy the game guys. Be back around 9:30-10
You're lucky you don't have to watch the rest of this crap. Where the hell is Dave Eiland? You think he could go out and talk to his pitcher?
Hughes sucks. In fact, any player that Cashman is associated with either by signing, trading for or calling up is terrible. Cashman should NOT have a job right now. He should be immediately fired. You dumb ass Yankee fans that get all excited after one game. These Cashman built Yankees can't even beat the Orioles, one of the worst teams in baseball. You're so dumb its amazing.
Fire Girardi, he's been over-managed.
Get Eiland out of here.
Send Hughes down.
This is bullshit.
cant beleive this shit. girardi sucks ass as a manager. cashman built nothing, he was here at the right time, over haul the pen
Greg maybe its time you admit the Hughes is NOT the future.
This was one of the guys we didnt want to trade to get Johan?
Give me a f*cking break this kid has NOTHING.
Fire Cash,Fire Girardi,Fire Eiland
F*CK get rid of JETER this team is making me SICKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!
Where the hell is Nick Swisher now BTW?
Oh my god, the guy posting before me is CRAZY!
In other news, God belss Ian Kennedy. We are all praying for you.
Sorry, meant "bless," not "belss."
The O's did blow a seven run lead to the Sox, so anything is possible.
You're out of your mind if you think they're winning the game.
Say whatever you want, but stranger things have happened.
I know there's still 130 sum games left, but this season is OVER. our hole gets deeper and deeper, while Tampa, Boston, & surprising Toronto are rolling, & haven't dealth with the injuries & circus's that we have dealt with already, I was hoping to win 2 in a row,
OK nevermind, you guys were right this one is over. Even I, The Optimist, am no longer optimistic after the Cano DP plus the 2-run homer to make it 11-1. They needed at least three runs last inning and they failed.
Welcome back to reality Optimist.
Peter Abraham just had a great point on his blog, why the hell is Edwar still on this team, but Mark Melancon and David Robertson get sent down? Does that make sense to anyone?
That is a good point. It makes as little sense as having Angel Berroa on the roster.
See, if Retardi brings in a real pitcher instead of Edwar the Yankees could be in this game.
Veras, Edwar and Marte are Girardi's ass buddies, thats why they never be sent down, or replace. Torre did it, now Girardi is, please get rid of this fool.
30 games in and this season has become a NIGHTMARE!
Hey people, just got back. Did you know that good Italian food and a lot of wine makes you stop caring about a bad Yankees loss for a while? Well it does.
Look, we all have to stop with this knee-jerk reaction stuff, when they win or lose. When the win it doesn't mean they're going to win the World Series, and when they lose it doesn't mean their season is over.
Feel good about a win, feel bad about a loss, but it's always just one game.
Also, one bad start or even 12 bad starts, doesn't mean all potential is lost on a 22-year-old with the stuff Hughes has. It also doesn't mean that this kid can't learn how to pitch, which is exactly what he needs to do.
He was also burned by his defense several times that inning, which didn't help, and because of his immaturity was unable to deal with it.
The Peter Abraham point was very valid. There is no reason why Edwar should be on the roster and David Robertson shouldn't. It makes no sense.
Try not to get so down on this team tonight. They just gotta go out and win tomorrow.
HUGHES IS DONE... NEVER EVEN EXISTED
Done at 22? lol
No, he's not.
I agree Edwar is useless. He cant do anything good. Short relief or long relief he is brutal.
David Robertson came into to a bases loaded jam with zero outs and the hitter had 2 balls and Robertson only gave up 1 run. What a joke that he got sent down.
And why does this team have both Pena and Berroa on the roster. Cashman is a moron.
Abraham's point is invalid. Who cares? The real question is WHY DOES BRIAN CASHMAN STILL HAVE A JOB? The great god of news media don't dare ask. Cashman must be related to Obama.
Anon,
How is Abraham's point invalid?
Abraham is about one level better than Peter King from SI is, check out this brain gem from Abraham less than 2 months ago. "I would suggest that if the Yankees did not have Alex, they would be far more likely to win. His 24 + 1 mentality is not conducive to championship play. They’re a much better team when they aren’t sitting around waiting for him to hit a home run"
And Mark Teixeria by the way, can he be worse?
I didn't say Abraham was always right, but he's right, Robertson or Melancon should have a spot before Ramirez. Every other outing he gets hammered.
this team cant manufacture runs it is a joke. Melky is hitting 330 but with runners with scoring he is hitting 200 same with Cano.
Abraham is a slob. He has about as much experience and expertise in baseball as my unborn daughter.
When Teixeira is batting .190 in June does the slow start excuse still count then? When can it end?
This guy is SO bad.
Joe,
Are you saying you think Ramirez actually deserves to be in the majors ahead of those other two?
Well it's unfair to judge a bullpen when they have to pitch about 10x more than they have to. Are we judging Mo on his performance the other night? No, we are rationalizing the fact that he hasn't been in a regular schedule.
I'm not asking you to judge the pen as a whole, I'm talking about Edwar. Every time he's in there he's a three-run homer waiting to happen.
Edwar Ramirez is the reason the Yankees have such a bad record this year, you are right.
When did I say that?
What if we just said that Edwar Ramirez got off to a slow start, would that be okay?
Seems to be the excuse for the rest of this team.
The question is whether you'd rather Robertson, Melancon, or Ramirez. I'd rather see Robertson.
Since he got to the majors Edwar has not been good in big spots. In high leverage situations batters are hitting .315/.422/.556 against him. And in late and close situations hitters are hitting .355/.452/.613 against him.
Fair enough.
Let's bring up Miranda because he's hitting .288 and Teixeira is hitting worse than guys like Giambi, Beltre, Uggla, Hardy. Oh wait we can't because we we're paying him too much money. So we'll probably trade any good 1B prospect we have over the next 6 years because we have a past his prime fellow who we signed because he had a few good seasons the ones before.
Strasburg is great, but $50 million is ridiculous.
No team will take such a risk on a young pitcher.
No the Yanks will risk when he's just over his prime ten seasons from now.
Joe, what are you talking about? Teixeira will be fine. He's just slumping.
He is batting .190!!! A-Rod never batted that low before you started calling for his head!
What does A-Rod have to do with this?
Call for his head? I'm not a big fan of his, I admit that. And I think he's a cheater, and I don't think they should have given him a 10-year deal. However, I don't remember asking for him to be cut from the team.
I'm just not too sure about Hughes.
Mike
eiland really is terrible...what credentials does he have anyway besides a 12-27 MLB record with a 5.75 ERA...maybe that's why the pen is so horrible, they're learning from a major league failure
