News & Notes

- In one start against the Tribe, Phil Hughes is 1-0, with a 1.50 ERA. The start came back in 2007 in Cleveland and in six innings he allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out six. He also pitched very well against them in relief of Roger Clemens in game three of the 2007 ALDS.

- In his last six starts Carl Pavano is 5-1, with a 3.58 ERA. He's 0-1, with a 5.28 ERA in three career starts against the Yankees. One of those starts came earlier this year at the new stadium and in six innings allowed just one run on four hits, walked one and struck out four in a no decision.

- The Indians placed Grady Sizemore on 15-day DL with left elbow inflammation and called up Chris Gimenez from Triple-A Columbus.

- The Yankees have not committed an error in 16 straight games, which is a franchise record. The Major League record in 17 straight games, and that was set by the 2006 Red Sox who did not commit an error from June 11-30.

- The Yankees have won 14 of their last 17 games, including the last three in a row.

- Derek Jeter extended his hitting streak to 13 games yesterday. Mark Teixeira also extended his streak to 12.

- According to Peter Abraham, if Chien-Ming Wang doesn't pitch in today's game he will throw a lengthy bullpen session after the game.

Greg, one of the main features I'm thinking of is the site would maintain a list of all possible feeds/sources. Then registered users could customize their view to include just the feeds they want to see - so they dont have to run around collecting feed sources.

naturally people could also then submit/recommend feed sources/sites for the site to suck in headlines from as well.

then rankings on each story so one could view stories as rated by others over certain time periods (last hour, day, week, etc) (assuming the site could get enough people rating things).

I'm also thinking have a mobile component so that the site would output a very lightweight page of headlines to mobile devices so that people can automatically get mobile versions of source feeds without have to figure it out at each site.

if you have other ideas that would be useful for such a service I'd love to hear it - like maybe ways of getting video or imagery - im not sure what is out there as sources and what might be valuable to compile into a common source to find this stuff.

Ok, so Hughes prediction time:

6.1 IP
5 H
1 R
2 BB
5 K

Let's keep the train rollin'!

Greg Cohen said...

That's a great idea Will. I'll think about it and get back to you with any ideas I have.

Anonymous said...

I really hope they destroy Pavano today. Like 9 runs in an inning and a third.

Will said...

Greg you can catch me at AIM onNYTurf or will-at-tekimaki.com (so can the spammers)

Greg Cohen said...

Alright, will do, Will.

Nice start, a double off the wall by The Captain.

Anonymous said...

Damon's at-bat totally fucked up that inning. They are hitting Pavano hard though.

daneptizl said...

It seems Hughes' velocity has come back and is hopefully here to stay.

Greg Cohen said...

It really did, Anon. You gotta just ground one to the left side there and give yourself up. It looked like Damon was more interested in driving in the run himself.

Yea his velocity is fine. He's just gotta put hitters away more efficiently. He's wasting too many pitches.

Anonymous said...

Pavano is a doucher. I can't believe how Kay just tried to make an excuse for him, saying you dont know your body. He obviously doesnt know his own body since he was injured for 4 years.

Anonymous said...

*saying we dont know his body.*

Anonymous said...

Here comes Hughes and one of his typical big innings.

Anonymous said...

Swisher has made some horrible looking throws this year, thats got to be the 3rd or 4th throw hes made that really should have went to the cut-off man.

Greg Cohen said...

That walk to Francisco was a killer. Stupid walk. Hopefully that's all he gives up and the Yankees can actually figure out how to hit Pavano.

Anonymous said...

Yea, Seriously. Why cant we get anything going against Pavano.

Anonymous said...

Cano seriously needs to learn how to take a pitch. Too many times I see him swing at the 1st pitch and pop it up. I dont care how good a-hitter you are, you have to take a fucking pitch when your team is down.

Anonymous said...

u guys gotta chill out i know things havnt been going well so far but its the yankees here you know what theyve done this year theyre gonna win the game

Greg Cohen said...

I'm not saying they're done, but for that inning the walk to Francisco killed Hughes. The Yankees can definitely still win this game.

Anonymous said...

well whatever, ive said this in the past. When u guys trash the yankees they start doin good

Greg Cohen said...

I'm just saying I'm not trashing anyone.

Anonymous said...

nevermind, im not comin out clear

Anonymous said...

Gardner is starting to piss me off. This game is now over because of his stupid misplay.

Greg Cohen said...

I don't know if it's "over" but that was a terrible play.

Anonymous said...

4-0..... GAME OVA!

YANKEES SUCK!

Greg Cohen said...

First of all, shut up.

Second, that run should be unearned because of Gardner's misplay. They should be able to score that play as an error because it should be caught by a major leaguer.

Greg Cohen said...

He was clearly safe.

Another bad call that goes against the Yanks.

Anonymous said...

Red Sox up 4-1... hahahahaha you guys will be in third place in a week.

Greg Cohen said...

4-2 now after Tex's two-run shot... slow down anon... slow down.

daneptizl said...

WTF is this shit... how the hell does Gardner not have an error...

Greg Cohen said...

Whoa, Wang's sinker looks ridiculous, and his velocity is back.

It's not an error because he didn't touch the ball. One of baseball's stupidest rules.

That was a ridiculous throw by Cervelli.

Anonymous said...

can someone tell me wat happened with gardner? I missed the play

Greg Cohen said...

Line drive right at him, but he took two or three steps in which allowed the ball to get over his head for a double.

daneptizl said...

So who gets the start on Friday... Wang?

Greg Cohen said...

That will certainly be the hot topic this week, Dane. Plus the Joba-to-the-pen stuff will be everywhere this week as well.

daneptizl said...

Slider's looking good too...

Greg Cohen said...

Yup.

daneptizl said...

Damnit, another nice throw by Cervelli... too bad Cano couldn't handle it...

Greg Cohen said...

Stupid cheap infield single... Wang needs to get out of this without any more runs.

daneptizl said...

I understand that on this one Jeter didn't have a play, but it reminds me how it bothers me that Jeter always just eats the ball rather than try to make the play, even when there would be no/minimal damage in trying the play.

Greg Cohen said...

YEA TEX!!!! Big knock... Come on A-Rod give em the lead.

Anonymous said...

What a player!!!

Greg Cohen said...

Cano has looked awful all day. 3-1 and he swings at an outside changeup.

Anonymous said...

Dammit Wang, You know leadoff walks hurt, now get the fuggin' DP

Greg Cohen said...

Everything Wang throws is up... He's done. Take him out.

Anonymous said...

its nice to see that 93-94mph sinker back from CMW

Greg Cohen said...

OK, I was wrong, and very happy I was.

Anonymous said...

1 pitch I think Wang needs is a Cutter, it will give him another look and might help him save that power sinker. Imagine, Cutter, Sinker, Fastball and Slider(although I hear you can only throw a cutter or a slider bc you lose feel for the other).

crossfire said...

Ok, let's score a few here and bring Mo in to shut them down.

Tex has been the team's MVP so far this year and that says a lot considering the way he started.

How pissed do you think sux fans are that they lost out on him?

Anonymous said...

Seriously why, why is Angel Berroa on this team??? Hes only pitch run now Ramiro Pena has taken that from him. Can we seriously get rid of the dead weight of Berroa and Veras, and call up Melancon, and Duncan/Linden.

also.. Wang is not Mo. You just can't figure out of to throw a cutter playing catch on the OF grass.

crossfire said...

Nice walk by Matsui. Now with Pena running, lets get him home!

Anonymous said...

What on Swishers head...looks like he got the Avalon cut from the movie "You don't mess with the Zohan"

Greg Cohen said...

lol

Anonymous said...

i'll take a hit like that from gardy everytime hes up...thats really all he has to do.

Anonymous said...

Midges, Seagulls, whats next, real native americans?

Way to go Posada, go back on the DL, we like Fransico better anyways.

Greg Cohen said...

Damn it Posada. Cervelli could have done that.

Anonymous said...

Alright. Coke needs to turn it around with this apperance, hes been struggling of late.

Anonymous said...

Thats terrible. Who didn't know Posada was going to do that? Everybody and their mother knew. Frigggin pathetic. Posada should have been PH for. Posada comes back and same old same old. He always does that crap. I simple dont understand this teams liking of Posada. Its ridiculous.

daneptizl said...

Is it too early to say Posada is the leading candidate for potential goat of the game?

Anonymous said...

Now, watch, we will blow it here because Posada can't execute.

Greg Cohen said...

I actually agree with you.

Greg Cohen said...

And there's the leadoff walk...

Anonymous said...

This team played WAY better without Posada. It is so obvious sometimes its funny.

daneptizl said...

So they should have PH for him and had Berroa catching the bottom of the inning, right?

You're dumb as hell. Who doesn't like a .300/.400/.600 catcher...

Anonymous said...

Im sick of seeing loyalty to the Vets on this team, I really am. Cervelli may not be a threat, but damn, he seemed to be getting the timely hit when needed when he was playing. Posada comes back, hits a bomb yesterday, then cant do anything simple today. Posada you blow!

Greg Cohen said...

You can't pinch hit for him, he just has to get the job done. And Gardner should have stolen second base.

Anonymous said...

Phil Coke, The Yankee Joke. Get him outta heeere.

daneptizl said...

Yeah, they should have sent Gardner.

Anonymous said...

Thank god, Coke should go do a line now that hes out of the game and pep up.

daneptizl said...

At least they're bringing in Robertson in now... trust him more than anyone but Mo in the bullpen.

Greg Cohen said...

You know you probably just jinxed him, right?

daneptizl said...

:[

Anonymous said...

dane just did his best kim jones

Anonymous said...

I dont want Posada as our catcher that's who. He is terrible signal caller. We were fine with 2 no names. Why do you want to pay someone $40m who can't catch?

And, no, I would have never let Posada hit there. He is terrible in those situations and he PROVED by swinging at garbage. I have seen him for 10 years do that kind of stuff. And, the proof is in the pudding.

And, the other anon is right, the loyalty to these old men is ridiculous. That's what I hate. Posada FAILED at doing his job. Nothing new. You were warned about this before.

Greg Cohen said...

Damn it.

Anonymous said...

Nice walk there Robertson. Lets see.....Wood can get the GREAT .300 hitting catcher to chase bad balls and hit into a DP, can Cashman's Robertson do the same?

daneptizl said...

My bad everyone...

This game was exactly like the one where Tex couldn't get it done against Philly....

Terrible.

Anonymous said...

Garbage. Complete garbage. Yanks need to go out and get some bullpen help...theres literally fucking no one out there that throws strikes other then Mo

Greg Cohen said...

Can you anonymous posters relax? They've won 14 of 18 and are in first place. Get a grip of yourselves.

JC said...

Goddamn walks!

Nothing pisses me off more than asshole pitchers who can't throw the damn ball over the freakin' plate!

daneptizl said...

Posada is better than Cervelli by a wide margin... it's unquestionable...

Anonymous said...

Nope guess not. I guess you dont know what the blank you are talking about do you Dan. Why dont you just STFU. Idiot. Posada SUCKS and ruined that game for us because he can't execute SIMPLE things. Posada is a LOSER. 1-1 since the return of the great .300 hitting catcher. Wow, impressive. Keep playing him....that's what you would do.

Greg Cohen said...

They're 2-1 since Posada came back, not 1-1.

daneptizl said...

Mo should have come in before Coke or Robertson anyways...

JC said...

Mo should NOT have come in. If the Yanks scored in the top of an inning, he'd need to close.

And I can't believe you idiots getting all over Posada like he sucks. Holy shit. Get a grip.

daneptizl said...

Why couldn't Cervelli's greatness lead us to a win today? He didn't get on base or make Hughes throw a shutout. What a scrub.

P.S. I love e-thugs.

Anonymous said...

That isn't the question at hand idiot. Stop erectign straw mand arguments to make yourself feel better. Posada lost that game because he failed at doing a simple job. 1-1 since Posada's return. Great managing Girardi.

And, maybe they can't throw strikes because POSADA SUCKS AT CATCHING. Ever think of that?

It is laughable at how terrible Posada is at calling a game. Hughes at 95 pitches through 5 innings. Great catching performance by the .300 hitter.

Anonymous said...

2-1

Greg Cohen said...

The Yankees lost because Joe Girardi didn't send Gardner in a situation when a steal was the OBVIOUS call.

Anonymous said...

Bad job by Girardi how do you not send Gardner to steal with a slow runner Posada batting.
No way a rookie player was on his own in that situation. Manager had the stop sign.

Also why take out Wang after 8 he should of pitched the 9th, he is a starter.

Capone said...

Winnable game. Couldnt get the big hit late

Anonymous said...

that anon is giving all us giving all us anon posters a bad name...lol..

Anonymous said...

Dont get mad because your BUM of a catcher can't execute SIMPLE things.

I'll take our record WITHOUT Posada and I will take our pitching ERA WITHOUT Posada catching. That's for sure. Posada=staff killer. I can't wait until he gets hurt again.

Anonymous said...

No forget all of our team we are blaming ... IF THE UMP called JEET safe like he was right before that TEX HR this would all be different right now ... O yea and Girardis mismanagement of the bullpenn

Greg Cohen said...

"that anon is giving all us giving all us anon posters a bad name...lol.."

You should add a sig to your comments so I can tell you're not the other anon.

crossfire said...

LOL Yeah he is.

Yeah, we should get rid of Robertson too because he let in the run. And while we're at it, Tex should have hit that ball out of the park instead of a 2 run double, so let's get rid of him too. And Arod didn't drive in Tex so he should go too. Then of course there is Hughes.

Posada is a bad hitter because he hit into a double play?

I love how two "no names" have such a reputation now that they should probably be on the all star team.

The world is full of catchers that can't hit a lick.

Don't get me wrong, I like Cervelli but we don't really have a big sampling of what he will be other than a good signal caller. If we took small samples, we could have predicted an MVP for Swisher after the first few weeks. Be realistic.

To say Posada is a bad catcher is just simply wrong. Is he a great catcher? No, but certainly adequate. And he can hit the shit out of the ball.

daneptizl said...

Answer me this... If Posada is such a bad catcher and made Hughes throw 95 pitches through 5... how come it was actually Cervelli who did that since Posada didn't catch any of Phil....

Your argument... it failed...

Greg Cohen said...

hahahahahahha, well done Dane.

JC said...

And dumbass Anon, Cervelli caught Highes today. Not Posada.

Idiot.

Anonymous said...

Posada = Fail.

But there really is a lack of quality out of the pen. Veras and Coke are examples of this. I really hope we get to see Melancon again over Veras. And I'd love to see what Wilkins De La Rosa can do, hes been pretty good down at AA, maybe its time to promote him to AAA and Melancon back up here and DFA Veras. I think Coke has more value and should be kept, but be kept in AAA til he works out of his funk.

Anonymous said...

Also the yankees do need two long relievers with two 5 innings pitchers Hughes and Chamberlain pitching back to back.

Anonymous said...

What the one Anon said about the loyalty to other players is true. I've felt that way for years now.

Why have Posada pinch hit in that situation? Hypothetically speaking, lets say its not Cervelli in that spot, and its Swisher or Gardner..would Po still pitch hit? I have a feeling that move was made bc It was too convienet with Cervelli up and he being the catcher, anyone else, I dont think Po is used.

Anonymous said...

b/c it was cervelli it was, i feel, the right move...pinch hit a catcher with a catcher who is a better hitter...

JC said...

Getting away from these idiotic remarks by Anon again....

This was a frustrating game. While maybe Gardner should have gone in the 9th, it's a tough decision. He gets throw out and then there are two outs.

What killed us today was the lack of clutch hitting. A-Rod and Cano could've given us the lead in the 8th and Posada could've given it to us in the 9th. All three failed in doing so.

And Gardner's misplaying the ball in center led to a run that wouldn't have scored if he made that out (which he should've).

And sending Wang out for another inning is risky. You need to have him available just in case Andy's back flares up and cannot pitch on his next scheduled start.

daneptizl said...

Girardi is the goat of this game. Should have had Gardner running, kept Wang in, let Robertson start off the inning clean since Coke would have faced 4 straight righties.

Veras and Berroa are useless as well..

crossfire said...

Can we trade that dumbass anon to the red sux blog for a dumbass to be named later? LOL

I'm sure we could get another "no name" dumbasses are. LOL

Anonymous said...

Veras, Coke and Berroa need to be shown the door out of town, They all really stink to the high heavens.

daneptizl said...

I'm surprised I'm saying this, but thank goodness we have Melky back tomorrow...

And the PH Posada was definitely the right move. Posada wouldn't have pinch hit for anyone else because they have no more OFs other than those starting... although I guess Melky could have gone out there in an emergency...

daneptizl said...

Cash considerations > PTBNL in this case.

JC said...

Girardi just made a comment in his press conference that kinda implied that Gardner was actually supposed to steal in the 9th.

He kept saying, "That issue's been addressed."

Kim Jones asked, "So you wanted to see him go there?" and Giardi said again, "It's been addressed."

Anonymous said...

Breaking News: Yankees release Angel Berroa and Option Phil Coke to Triple A SWB.

keep wishing.

Greg Cohen said...

Wow, Girardi threw Gardner under the bus on the postgame. He was asked if he though Gardner should have tried to steal and said "that's been addressed." I take that as him saying they gave him the green light and he didn't go and Girardi was pissed.

daneptizl said...

I don't mind it. Gardner's fast as hell and Kerry isn't fast to the plate... easy call there... especially with Posada(slow) at the plate...

daneptizl said...

Marte and Melancon should be a big boost... too bad they'll both take too long to come...

Anonymous said...

@ Greg yeah I just saw that he did throw Gardner under the bus. If it was Gardner mistake you would think Girardi would cover for the rookie.

But I still dont understand why didn't he just tell Gardner to steal on a certain pitch if Gardner was being hesitant.

JC said...

I'm glad he did kinda let it be known Gardner was supposed to go there.

Gardner really screwed up today. Didn't steal in the 9th when he was supposed to and misplayed a ball in center that led to a run that shouldn't have scored.

daneptizl said...

Coke was throwing 90-91 fastballs again...

Anonymous said...

No one listened to me last week when I said Gardner was crap and a problem on this team..see what I mean now.

JC said...

Gardner just said that he was told to steal, but he just didn't.

Anonymous said...

Thank god Melk is back tomorrow. Get this moron Gardner out of the line-ups again.

JC said...

I think Gardner is best suited as a fourth outfielder and a speedy pinch-runner right now. It's obvious that he's not ready to play on a regular basis.

Anonymous said...

Yeah Gardner said that he couldn't get a read of Wood and didn't get a good jump.

Greg Cohen said...

Anon, there has not been one player on this team that you have no bashed at one point this season.

Anonymous said...

Phil Coke is not getting enough blame. How do you give up a lead off walk in the 9th to the number 9 hitter.

crossfire said...

I also like that Girardi called Gardner out a bit out a bit. He should have stolen the base, plain and simple. If he was told to do it and didn't, it's plainly his fault. I'm glad to hear that he manned up and admitted it. Hopefully a lesson learned.

By the way, some anon posters are pretty good and should probably let everyone know who they are.

Some other anon posters are obviously morons and I understand why they remain anonymous.

Will said...

i didnt watch this game. who the hell pitched the 9th?!!!

god let it be coke whom i think sucks much more than others think.

Will said...

oh i see. nice walk. Coke sucks under pressure.

crossfire said...

My comment was in regards to an earlier post. Obviously Coke's walk was horrible.

Anonymous said...

Coke is a mental midget you saw it after he pitched the 9th to get the save.

daneptizl said...

So is it Hughes or Wang who gets the next start?

Anonymous said...

Yankees are in first place and have won 14 of 18, yet people are whining. They made a couple of bad plays today but lets not overreact.

crossfire said...

Ahhh... an anonymous with common sense. Always nice to see.

The team is playing great. Every team has flaws and most every team has bad pitchers in their bullpen. It's a fact of life.

As far as I am concerned, the Yanks look like the best team out there.
