With the slugging Phillies heading into The Bronx to face the streaking Yankees, guesses on the number of home runs hit over the holiday weekend are high and higher.
According to Peter Gammons of ESPN, that's because the new Yankee Stadium "has become one of the biggest jokes in baseball.
Speaking during his weekly segment on the "Mike & Mike in the Morning" radio program, Gammons predicted the teams would hit 16 home runs in their three-game series.
"Buster Olney has been pointing out that they're going to pass last year's home run total in the old [Yankee] Stadium by about July 15," Gammons said. "I'm tired of people saying it's too early, we don't have enough games. While I'm not a big fan of the new Yankee Stadium, to me the joke is Gammons' crusade against the Yankees. He blasts Joba Chamberlain for pumping his fist, while his closer, Jonathan Papelbon has orgasms on the mound after every save. A-Rod is a disgusting cheater who used PEDs since high school, but Manny Ramirez is misunderstood and only used this one time. Now, it's Yankee Stadium that he has decided to go after. And no, not because of the real problems like obstructed seats, empty seats, the moat, or monument cave, but because it's been a home run hitters park to start the year."We have enough games. We know that this was not a very well-planned ballpark. Any player that's played there will tell you that it's become one of the biggest jokes in baseball."
I've already heard several times that once we get into the summer months and the old stadium comes down the winds at the new place will change, and the jet stream to right will either go away all together or at least become much less significant.
Jayson Stark, Gammons' colleague over at ESPN, wrote this yesterday:
The new Yankee arcadium: Those home runs might be flying. But we're hearing that the Yankees don't plan to make any firm judgments on the home run propensity of the new Yankee Stadium until after the summer breezes kick in and the old stadium is dismantled.Look, if you're going to pick on the new Yankee Stadium pick on it for the real issues, not the home run stuff. Are all the other bandboxes around baseball "jokes"? Anyway, as of now we don't even know how big an issue this actually is.
The club has been told by its engineers that when the old park is out of the way, the wind currents off the East River should hit the new stadium differently and actually reduce home runs.
In the meantime, we've studied the home run data over at hittrackeronline.com. And even though the new stadium has proved to be 55 percent easier to hit a home run in than the average park, data shows the wind effect might be less dramatic than popularly believed. For instance:So is this just a place where pitchers make one gruesome pitch after another? Seems hard to believe that's the only explanation. But that's why all those engineers make the big bucks, right?
Personally, I just think Gammons sees that the Yankees are turning things around and he's scared. The "mighty" Red Sox are just a game up, David Ortiz looks like he's off the juice, and the Yankees are slowly turning into a very solid ball club. So he needs to find a way to attack the Yankees, and for now the new stadium is the easiest target.

Well said Greg. Going to my baseball game now. See ya.
Have a good game.
Peter Gammons is a JOKE of a sports "reporter" or whatever espn contributors are called these days
I have stopped listening to every reporter and trusting what they have to say except Olney. We all know gammons has a huge hard on for the sox, but he is just like everyone out there and is a bandwagoner. Olney, I agree with on a lot of things, he was a reporter for the yanks during the championship years, he put a book out about the last night of our dynasty, great book by the way. It has become a joke the amount of home runs hit at the park, but what can we do at this point except bitch? Also we still have to put the new parking deck up and take down the old ballpark to find out what the next 100 years will bring with this place. I have very few complaints except the home runs, I have been to 5 games this year and loved everyone except the one loss I was at(Tex 3run double to tie, the rain and then phil coke giving it up). My only complaints is the obvious the prices, and the batting practice rules, oh wait they changed them so .. just the prices and home runs. The place is beautiful and its a palace. The analysts should shove their so called "opinions" up their ass cause last time I checked every opposing player this year has said the place is great, and is gorgeous, and just breathtaking.
Now onto bigger and better things our streak against the world chumps !!
Gammons is a Red Sox fan. That's why.
Big Pappy couldn't hit a homerun at new stadium
The yankees are on a 9 game winning streak. So the yankee haters cant complain about the team so they are now complaning about the homeruns at the stadium.
Gammons is nothing more than a grumpy old man...and a red sox fan...so to hell with him...
First off, I like home runs, so what's the problem? If I didn't I'd watch the National League.
Know what's a joke? A gigantic green wall ten feet from 3rd base that even my mother can hit a double off of. What is Gammons talking about? How about that POS indoor parking garage the Rays play in?
.
As for tonight, back to reality kids! It was fun playing the worst teams in the league, now we get to see if CC and the line up have really woken up.

ps - as i mentioned last night I sat in 206 row 4, this park looks nothing like old yankee stadium, its a completely different park, its time to face that - its not even close. My seats we're awesome, but you couldn't pay me to see in the Grand Stand for 3 hours. Sitting in 206 it was nice not facing the all imposing score board, much more relaxing, we had a great time.
yeah peter gammons has no idea what it means to be a unbias professional reporter, give it a season, i'm sure after this season there will be some changes to the stadium, and hopefully the personel that run it...it doesn't matter, he doesn't have much left
right on dude
Obviously the new stadium is playing like Coors field. But its the first year the yankees will make adjustments to the stadium during the offseason.
I dont understand how the yankees new how the ball was going to carry. You cant predict these kind of things until you see the park play. and then in the offseason you make your adjustments to the stadium
Many other ballparks have done this.
But I must say... him reminding me that we might get Mauer in '11 did get me excited again...
