What is it about the mound at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington? The last time Phil Hughes pitched there against the Rangers he threw 6.1 no-hit innings before pulling his hamstring. It was the best I have ever seen him throw, but today he was just as good. He may not have been better today but he was just as good. He held the potent Rangers offense to no runs on three hits and a walk, and struck out six. His fastball was sitting at 92-93 mph for the first innings of the game, and dropped to 89-91 as the game progressed. His breaking pitches were very good, especially the curve, and most importantly he pounded the zone and was economical with his pitches. Of his 101 pitches 65 of them were strikes.
I think the turning point of the day for Hughes came in the second inning. With the Yankees leading 2-0, he allowed a leadoff double to Nelson Cruz and then hit Hank Blalock with a pitch. Last year this was a point in the game where he would fold under the pressure and get rocked, but not today. He was able to strike out Marlon Byrd, Chris Davis, and Taylor Teagarden in order to get out of the jam. He cruised the rest of the way.
The Yankees jumped on Rangers' starter Matt Harrison for two quick runs in the first. Derek Jeter led off with a double, Johnny Damon then reached on an infield single, Mark Teixeira followed with a double and the Yanks led 1-0 with runners on second and third. Alex Rodriguez was then up and drove in the Yankees' second run with an RBI single. It was the beginning of what would be a great day for A-Rod. He ended up going 5-for-5 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored.
They would add four more runs in the top of the third. Two of the runs came in on A-Rod's first double of the day, and two more came home on a Robinson Cano triple.
Nick Swisher drove in the Yankees seventh run in the top of the fifth with an RBI single, it was a much needed hit for the struggling Swisher, hopefully it can be the hit that gets him going. Swisher would later add a sac-fly in the top half of the eighth for the final Yankees run. But before that the Yanks added three runs in the top of the sixth inning. With one out Damon and Jeter walked, and Teixeira following with an RBI single. A-Rod then came up and smacked his second double deep into left-center field for another two RBI.
Alfredo Aceves gave up a run on a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth, but was able to retire the side without allowing any more damage.
It was a great day for the Yanks' 2 through 5 hitters, as Damon, Teixeira, A-Rod, and Cano combined to go 11-for-18, with four doubles, a triple, two walks, eight RBI and nine runs scored. Not too shabby.
Nothing like a dominating 11-1 victory to start a road trip. Game two of the three-game series is tomorrow night in Arlington. Joba Chamberlain will take the mound for the Yanks and he will go up against Rangers' ace Kevin Millwood. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m., and the game will be on MY9 and WCBS 880.

Nice game all around but I am most happy with the performance of Hughes. I still hope Wang comes back strong but it's always good to have a surplus of pitching.
