However, two sources told ESPN's T.J. Quinn and Mark Fainaru-Wada that the drug used by Ramirez is hCG -- human chorionic gonadotropin. HCG is a women's fertility drug typically used by steroid users to restart their body's natural testosterone production as they come off a steroid cycle. It is similar to Clomid, the drug Bonds, Giambi and others used as clients of BALCO.UPDATE 1:09 p.m: Here's a statement from Manny:
"Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me," Ramirez said. "Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now.
"I do want to say one other thing; I've taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons. I want to apologize to [Dodgers owner Frank] McCourt, Mrs. McCourt, [manager Joe] Torre, my teammates, the Dodger organization, and to the Dodger fans. LA is a special place to me and I know everybody is disappointed. So am I. I'm sorry about this whole situation."
I've heard this excuse before and I'm sorry but I'm not buying it.
Major League Baseball is expected to announce Thursday that Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended for 50 games, The Los Angeles Times is reporting.More information as it comes. PED's aren't only steroids, he could have tested positive for amphetamines or something, but either way this is a huge blow for the Dodgers.
Ramirez's suspension is expected to be announced Thursday, The Times said.
But seriously, how stupid do you have to be to still be cheating?
Could you imagine the shi if the Yankees signed him? At least the only thing we have to worry about with Teixeira is not getting runners in from third with the game on the line.
On a positive note, the timing could not have been better for A-Rod.

Manny on roids. Quel surpris! This is great news for A-Roid. Someone else can take the heat for a while.
Honestly im shocked...
Very true Bruce.
i always thought he may have been juicing... i bet if was on the Sox still this would not have come out...
People thought I was crazy for thinking he was on something.
Fianlly some bad news that doesn't involve the Yanks. I had such a sigh of relief when I read the story that it wasn't a Yankee. Hopefully this story will now start to overide the AROD stuff.
If anyone believe that Manny hasn't been juicing for years, I have a bridge to sell them.
This guy will now blame his doctor on a banned substance. Sure Manny we believe you. They all have been juicing. ALL OF THEM!! its part of being a pro athlete EVERYWHERE. millions of dollars don't get shelled out for players to show fatigue at the end of a season. Its a show, IT MUST GO ON.
I agree with anon....Baseball turned its head away the entire time this was going on....Look at Manny's increase in size from a rookie to his glory days in Boston..This stuff was a huge part of the game and it's nice to see someone other than a Yankee catch some heat finally.
Anyonymous, he was young when came up with Cleveland, it wasn't like Bond's transformation (head got huge and gained about 25 lbs of muscle). I didn't see this one coming but I can't I'm shocked anymore. Stupid move by Ramirez and the Dodgers are really gonna miss him.
Theres a difference from being young and gaining muscle as you get older and becoming twice the size you were when you were younger.
greg what was the name of the place you went to by the Stadium that had cheap beers? I usually go to Stan's but I might switch it up tonight.
I am no longer shocked when anyone tests positive anymore. But I would have been shocked if Manny never did steroids.
Stadium Pizza. It's down by that mural of all the Yankees legends down by gate 6 of the old stadium. You can check out some pics of the place here and here.
I'm pretty glad myself than somebody else than a Yankee player, a Yankee owner, a Yankee stadium is taking the blame for something bad in the Majors for once.
That's an incredibly good break for the Red Sox, almost unfair since you can assume that he, like A-Rod, didn't start taking roids yesterday. Should we go as far as saying 2004 and 2007 were tainted? I wouldn't but I think the question is gonna be raised by many more Yankee fans in the following weeks.
Anyway, Manny's a cheater too, he joins the long list of them, that's another disaster for the game but at least he didn't wear pinstripes at any time.
Go Bombers, Go Andy.
Suddenly Big Papi's power is missing.... Nick Green has more homers thanthe Big Pap smear
They say it was not a steroid but another performance enhancer that he got after a personal doctors visit... Viagra anyone?
Hmm another player under Joe Torre leaderhip using a PED
LOL @ Medication
what health issues were you having that a doctor gave you something that tested positive for PED's.
Amazing he has health issues and can still hit 350.
Release all 103 names and you will see many red sux and former sux players on that list.
You're kidding anon, right? You're really going to blame Torre for this?
I'll never understand why Yankees hate Torre so much.
A big blow to the Dodgers to be sure.
Gee whiz, I would 'never' have suspected Manny! Just like I don't suspect Ortiz either.
If it takes some heat off A-Rod, that works for me.
Where's Selena Roberts? Looks like a great tell-all story is out there to be had. Wouldn't you think Manny's life could be just as 'fascinating' as A-Rod's life? Well, maybe Selena only finds A-Rod to be fascinating.
They hate him because he only brought consistency to an organization that was a zoo from the 70's through the mid 90's and only won four rings in five years when the Yanks should've won every year. Torre didn't reinforce their entitlement to a parade every year after jumping on the mid 90's band wagon, when old school fans didn't even expect 96 to ever happen. That's why they hate him.
Torre is a bum as David Wells said "those yankee teams were awesome anyone could of managed those teams to a championship"
Torre was underestimated in his years with us Greg, and was a devastating loss. At least he knew how to use a bullpen properly instead of using all 13 guys in 4 innings mixing and matching by Girardi is a joke. Also he is afraid to use Mo for more than 3 outs, anybody els notice that? I think Mo should have started the 10th not Coke, Mo had only 16 pitches in the 9th.
Anon, you can't actually believe that, can you?
Rob, I have noticed that about Girardi and Mo. Really strange.
Torre burned out Scott Proctor and Tanyan Sturtze !
Danny, this is so dead-on that it bears repeating:
"Torre didn't reinforce their entitlement to a parade every year after jumping on the mid 90's band wagon, when old school fans didn't even expect 96 to ever happen. That's why they hate him."
These are the same fans who boo every new aqcuisition 25 games into the year because they're struggling.
Torre gets a team to the playoffs for 13 years in a row and he's a bum? Please tell me who did a better job shielding his teams from Steinbrenner so they could win? Bobby Cox had a pitching staff and a mix of youth and quality blue collar talent comparable to the Yanks back then and he couldn't even win it all more than once in 14 playoff appearences.
good point
Well said Danny.
it's kinda ridiculous to assume that someone is a bandwagon fan just because they don't like joe torre
I was wondering...
It was reported that Manny got nailed using a female fertility drug that steroid users use when coming off of a round of steroids because their testosterone levels get depleted.
So maybe this was just a case of Manny being Mommy! LOL
Anonymous are you the one who quoted David Wells' opinion on Torre? If so then yeah I'm assuming that. Who in their right mind would listen to Wells' opinion on Torre, this is same guy who quit on his team in the middle of the world series.
Quote David Cone telling Smoltz and Glavin
"If Mariano was on the braves you would have 4 rings"
Torre was overrated, he was a glorified baseball nanny.
A glorified nanny that managed to keep most of his players off the DL and on the field during the dynasty, and who is currently managing a 19-8 team without nearly the talent Girardi has ran into the ground.
Oh sorry a 21-8 team
