MLB, FOX To Start Postseason Game Earlier

According to Ken Rosenthal, Major League Baseball and FOX reached an agreement this weekend that the first pitch for all weeknight postseason games will be at 7:57 p.m. ET, and not 8:28 or 8:38 like it has been in years past.

Saturday night games on FOX will start no later than weeknight games and possibly earlier. Sunday night games will begin after the conclusion of FOX's NFL broadcasts, as in previous years.

The new start times will apply this season to FOX's coverage of the American League Championship Series and World Series.

TBS, which will broadcast the NLCS in addition to all four Division Series, has not yet set its start times.

FOX and TBS air the two League Championship Series on a rotating basis.

"I think this move will help us big-time," commissioner Bud Selig told FOXSports.com. "This is reaching out to fans. This is precisely what we want to do."

I don't know how much it will help ratings, in fact the article goes on to state that it might not help ratings at all, but this will be good for fans who could always use that extra half hour of sleep.

Do you like the new start times?

It's a good idea. I know the west coast bitches about missing the beginning of games while at work but at least they can listen on the radio on the way home. And besides, it's much more important to catch the end of a game than see the beginning.

But probably most important is the ability for kids to at least watch some of the game. My oldest son was just 8 yrs old in 1996 and I caught him sneaking a radio under the blankets to listen to the games. But of course, he couldn't listen to them all.

Baseball, a game with such rich history, seems to have forgotten that the kids are it's future.

Maybe this is a small step in the right direction.

True.

The commish is making such a big deal about this..."help us big time". Overstatement. Sure, its a little earlier, but not 4pm or even 7pm earlier. Its not a big deal. They shaved off maybe 20minutes from the conclusion of the game which usually occurs near midnight.

Anon, you're right, Selig is trying to blow this up so he looks better. However, like Crossfire said, it's a step in the right direction.

How having FOX just eliminate it's awful pre-game coverage, and start the game at 8:05? A day game on the weekends would be cool too.

ok, i feel offended here. i might be there only one here who actually likes watching FOX baseball.......... i guess it's a good idea. just as long as they don't like have it in the early afternoon. it takes away the fun of stayin' up late at night to see your team win. i know people will be madd tired in the morning, but at least you can brag about how you team won, and u stayed up all night to watch it. that's how it was back in the dynasty days with me. i knew i had to go to bed for school, but me, and all my friends stayed up just to watch the yankees win. i guess it's a thrill to me. but like i said, i can care less about it starting 40 minutes earlier.

and please, stop hating on the MLB on FOX. i love FOX sports, MLB and NFL. to me, joe buck is cool!

There's no reason a Sunday World Series game should start any later than 7:30 Eastern anyway. Fox could go straight from NFL coverage into the game, and EVERYBODY in America is already watching TV.
