Red Sox Had Meeting to Discuss Correct Way to Use PEDs?

Boston Dirt Dogs is reporting that former Red Sox Infielder Lou Merloni Says that the Sox brought in a doctor to speak to the players about the right way to use steroids. Keep in mind that this was before the new owners took over and before Theo Epstein was GM.

Sat. May 9, 2009, Lou Merloni, who did not specify the year the meeting with the doctor took place, on Comcast SportsNet's The Baseball Show: "I'm in spring training, and I got an 8:30-9:00 meeting in the morning. I walk into that office, and this happened while I was with the Boston Red Sox before this last regime, I'm sitting in the meeting. There's a doctor up there and he's talking about steroids, and everyone was like 'here we go, we're gonna sit here and get the whole thing -- they're bad for you.' No. He spins it and says 'you know what, if you take steroids and sit on the couch all winter long, you can actually get stronger than someone who works out clean, if you're going to take steroids, one cycle won't hurt you, abusing it will.' He sat there for one hour and told us how to properly use steroids while I'm with the Boston Red Sox, sitting there with the rest of the organization, and after this I said 'what the heck was that?' And everybody on the team was like 'what was that?' And the response we got was 'well, we know guys are taking it, so we want to make sure they're taking it the right way'... Where did that come from? That didn't come from the Players Association... well the organization put this meeting together is what I'm saying."

Merloni Didn't Mention the Year the Doc Addressed the Sox
But Things That Make You Go Hmmm... Dan Duquette's 2001 Boston Red Sox... featuring infielder Lou Merloni... and newly-signed superstar Manny Ramirez

This is very similar to a story from last February where John Rocker mentioned a similar meeting about proper steroid use that took place in spring training of 2002 while he was on the Texas Rangers.

I know Merloni said he believed the organization put the meeting together, but if similar meetings were going on in Texas and Boston, I have to believe that MLB itself was orchestrating these things, and if that was the case, shouldn't Bud Selig resign immediately?

This is why I think the Mitchell Report is a bload of crap. I guanrantee he knew of alot more sox that were on the juice, Ex: Kapler, Nixon, Ortiz, Millar.

I've been reading some stuff on this meeting and it's amazing the excuses I'm hearing.

"Oh, they just wanted to educate their players"

"they weren't encouraging anything"

If this was a former Yankee talking about a spring training steroid meeting at Legends Field all hell would break loose.

I really dont know where to start. For one, I am sick of the steroid talk, I was sick of it in 2005. The whole era is one that frustrates me as a person. I'd like to watch a game and see someone do well without having to say to myself "I wonder if..."

As far as Selig. His time is done. This is a man who says "dont point the finger at me" but when you look at the history, in the early 90's to mid 90's he says "PEDS are a problem" yet its not until 2003 that something gets done. The man dropped the ball on this, instead of talking about the problem for 10 years he should have had the ball rolling on fixing it.

As far as team meetings, if the teams did have meetings to educate players, shame on them. Steroids are a serious problem and are ruining the game on all levels.

Also, I remember Arod getting trashed by the Texas owner for "throwing Texas under te bus" bc he said it was a lose culture, now theres rumblings the team showed players how to use them? Whats that about...

Hey Greg,
Recently I started a blog of my own,

pinstripedglory.blogspot.com

I have a similar thing going on with the yankee site list as you and threw a link up there to your site, I was wondering if you could do the same for me with your Yankee links.

Thanks.

ESPN will sweep it under the rug. No worries folks. This isnt a story, damning the Yanks.......now thats a story.

Does anyone else care that Gamons and Phillips were totally cool with Papelbon's mound antics but gave Joba a lot of grief?

Greg Cohen said...

I do. Gammons made Joba sound like the worst human being in the sport yesterday on BBTN and then seems not to care at all about Papelbon. It's pathetic.

Oaks,

Sure I'll add you to my blogroll right now.

Gammons is a clown, he was saying that Manny started steroids when he got traded to the dodgers.

Greg Cohen said...

Did he really say that? It's getting to the point where it looks like he doesn't even care if people think he's an idiot.

Oaks said...

Cant stand Gammons. This guy will say anything to drown the Yanks and anything to make the Sox look good.

Anonymous said...

Yeah first he was on ESPN saying that he believed Manny side of the story. Then after when what type of drug came out, he said he thinks Manny started using when he got traded because he was struggling in Boston, and then started putting up incredible numbers as a dodger.

I dont even watch espn too often anymore, MLB Network blows them away.

Thats freaking hilarious. Last season when Manny was traded Gammons said something along the lines of "you know Manny, when hes upset, he wont play well, he needed to go, he would not give the Sox 100%" then after he got on a roll with the Dodgers Gammons then brought up the situation in Boston and how Manny was being Manny and wasnt playing hard because he was sick of the team.

Now hes gunna back track on that and say Manny used steroids after going to LA? Damn, wow, didn't know steroids worked that fast.

Gammons=Tool.

I agree with Anonymous. I havent watched ESPN in over a year now. Every sport they are Boston bias in. A few weeks ago when the Yanks played the Sox on ESPN I had the game muted the entire time. I just couldnt stand to hear them. Did anyone notice that during that broadcast they switched to show highlights of the Celtics and Bruins playoff runs? No other teams were mentioned. Hellooo? What about their advertisement promo for an upcoming MLB game aired on ESPN? They use Fenway's scoreboard as the promo, come on!!

I watch the MLB Network for all game recaps. They are fun to watch, 10 times more informative, way more readily available and arent bias towards any one team. I even stopped listening to ESPN radio. Factor in the Boston Bias attitude with Michael Kay and a Yankees fan will just implode. Thats another thing, why the hell cant we rid ourselves of Michael Kay? I mean the guy was ripping Swisher for high fiving a fan the other day. Seriously? Thats the only fun us fans have for the last few years. A non-uptight player willing to go out of his way to have fun and be silly? Its a breath of fresh air.

Why hasnt the NY sports press gone after Boston players? Why hasnt YES or SNY or MSG had exclusive reports on Boston's steroids usage? Why only do we read about their vague exploits on blogs where no one cares? How can it be that NO players on any RedSox team dating back to the mid-90's have NOT have tested positive for PED's? Its just not possible. There is a GIANT RedSox cover-up here and no one seems to care or seems to want to open their eyes too it. NY media finds it just as suiting to write BS articles are the choking Mets and floundering Yankees. These are your teams dumbasses! Go after Philly and Boston. Their doing it to you on a nationwide scale!

NY teams will always have their fair share of hatred around the country. But this is ridiculous.

It's things like this that make me even happier that the MLB Network is around. There is absolutely no need to ever watch Baseball Tonight again. MLB Network has better coverage, better and more objective analysis, and it's on all day.

There is no doubt in my mind that those Red Sox teams were juicers, and there never had been any doubt. I'm glad the truth is finally coming out.

Actually, in the grand scheme of things, Selig did react fairly quickly to the steroid issue. Jim Bouton wrote about players using amphetamines in "Ball Four" in 1969, and it took MLB until 2005 to ban them. Only taking 10 years to react to the steroid problem is light speed for MLB.

Greg Cohen said...

I think Selig knew it was going on and did nothing on purpose. Everyone was making money so he didn't make a big deal out of it until it became an issue with the fan/media/government. He doesn't care about keeping the game clean, just keeping people off his back.

Mario, don't give up on the game. Baseball is bigger than the fools who've tarnished this era. The Black Sox threw a World Series and baseball fought on, and it will battle through this blemish too.
