News & Notes
- Joba Chamberlain threw a side session today and says he'll be ready for Tuesday's start.
- Brian Bruney still has no clue why he has pain in his arm but says he hopes to pitch tomorrow afternoon in Texas.
- In two career starts against the Phillies CC Sabathia is 1-1, with a 4.97 ERA. He did face them in game two of last year's NLDS and did not pitch well. In just 3.2 innings CC allowed five runs on six hits, walked four, and struck out five. The last time he faced them in the regular season was on 6/20/07, and took the win in a 10-6 Indians win. He didn't have a greatest of games as he allowed four runs on five hits, one walk, and four strike outs.
- Cole Hamels has made one start against the Yankees. It was his sixth career start in the big leagues back on 6/21/06 in Philly. In that game he allowed two runs on six hits, walked three, and struck out six, and took the loss in a 5-0 Yankees win. .
- The Yankees have won 10 of 11 and 12 of their last 15.
- The Yankees have not made an error in ten straight games, their longest errorless streak since 1995.
- I know this has nothing to do with the Yankees, but here's a funny picture of Jonathan Papelbon in the dugout of last night's game following his blown save to the Mets.

Did you see him jump out on the field after Wright made that play?
It's ridiculous that all the media cares about is if Joba does a little fist pump, yet they don't care that Papelbum throws a tantrum like that.
Yea, he's such a moron. It was great to hear Keith Hernandez tell him to "sit down" and Ron Darling agreed by saying, "seriously."
Brett Gardner you fuck, terrible play, you had no chance at that ball, loser...
Melky should have backed him up a little bit better than he did, but you're right Gardner had no chance.
yeah, papelbum looked pretty immature running out of the dugout, i'm sure peter gammons will find a way to defend his boy...
lol he'll probably say it shows how much fire he has, or some B.S. like that.
What the hell kind of a pitch was that to Ibanez? A 1-2 fastball down the middle? What the fuck?
I completely agree.
Here comes Matsui to end another inning.
See.
I am starting to hate Matsui. Package him up and send him to SF maybe we can get a bag of balls and some bats, Matsui, the inning killer.
I really can't understand how Girardi plays Matsui against the lefty instead of the switch-hitting Nick Swisher. And I don't care how bad Swisher has been, because Matsui has also been bad lately.
Anyway, this is a huge out right here. CC has to get out of this with the score still 3-2.
That's what I was just going to say. Why start Gardner and Matsui against Hamels? You're better off with Melky and Swisher, who are both switch-hitters.
It's shit like that with Girardi that really annoys me. That just makes ZERO sense.
Victorino and Ruiz have killed the Yankees.
Typical Jeter. The first pitch was a 86mph right down the middle and he does nothign but watch it. Any real hitter would have turned on that ball and crushed it because it was a meatball. This team is still filled with old men. And, Jeter is the king of them. I can't wait for Posada to get back and ruin our streak. Watch and see.
Veras? Seriously?
You can't wait for the Yankees' streak to be ruined?
Wow, some fan you are.
Damnit Gardner... why you gotta throw yourself...
Jeter had two pitches right down the middle, the phillies seemed more concerned with Gardner Jeter could of crushed those pitches.
You guys do understand that the steal was on and Jeter was trying to give Gardner a chance to steal. Could he have hit those pitches? Probably, but you have to understand the situation.
And here's another huge out in this ballgame.
Come on CC!
You got to give Ruiz credit that was a perfect bullet throw.
Yep, you do. It was a perfect throw.
Wonder if Peter Gaymonns is going to complain about CC's fist pump.
Mo should be in this game. I can't believe Girardi is going with Veras for the ninth.
yeah why isn't Mariano not in the game
This makes no sense to me.
God, he walks Ruiz on four pitches to face Rollins.
Good job Veras he gets the job done but wow he makes me nervous.
Lidge blows so at least they have a chance.
He did it again!
Unbelievable.
first y take cano out, yeah he's not super fast but he's not slow either, y not pinch hit for matsui instead of cervelli, & gradner needs to get sent down, can't we bring up another outfielder from AAA...Girardi makes no sense sometimes you now took out 1 of ur hottest hitters in cano, & cervellis has had better at bats then gardner...
Why bring in Swisher for Cervelli. There is not a yankee colder than Swisher. I have more faith in Cervelli
Damnit Teixeira...
That double play killed the rally.
Getting 2 outs hits are very diffucult.
>> Jeter had two pitches right down the middle, the phillies seemed more concerned with Gardner Jeter could of crushed those pitches. <<
Hey Dumbass, the steal was on for Gardner. They wanted Gardner at second before Jeter started swinging.
Know what you're talking about before you start talking nonsense.
The streak already ended. And, Jeter let 2 meatballs go. I understand the game situation and it had nothing to do with Gardner running. The Phillies were going to prevent that period. Why dont you just say Jeter had a terrible AB which he did. It was frankly a joke.
And, great job Tex, way to ruin a chance at winning so you can pull the ball for no reason. This team is full of stupid players like its manager and FO.
I hate saying it, but I have a bad feeling about this game. We had our chances to win in the 9th and 10th and didn't take advantage. I think we might've lost our chance to win this game.
I hope I'm wrong, though.
Stupid Anon... You've never played baseball, have you?
why wasn't A-Rod guarding the lines. Fire Girardi
This is what happens when you can't bring up the pitcher who should have this spot.... either Robertson or Melancon... pisses me off so damn much.
Why would A-Rod be guarding the line, moron? A single gets the run in, so why guard against the double? You guard the lines and you leave holes open for singles.
Again, you don't know what you're talking about.
y was Mo taken out after a fast
10th? Girardi has no clue....
Garbage Gardner for the loss.
You people fuckin' kill me...
This is why I rarely post on sports sites. Most people have no freakin' clue what they're talking about...
Rough loss, kinda puts a major damper on what was a great homestand.
Girardi screwed up when he left Tomko in to face Utley. Utley should have been Phil Coke's man. I know, I know, the bullpen is short. But I'd rather have won the game.
Robertson or Melancon should be here instead of Tomko...
I would agree, but they didn't want to use Wang. Coke pitched two innings yesterday, so he wouldn't be able to pitch beyond Utley, and then Tomko would be done.
>> Robertson or Melancon should be here instead of Tomko... <<
Why? Tomko has been good.
Robertson and Melancon weren't good when they were up here.
Tough loss but overall great homestand. The yanks went 8-2 in 10 games I think all fans would take that.
This team needs to get more runs in earlier in the game. Yanks made Happ and Myers look like allstars and they are not that good. You cant always rely on walkoffs.
Tomko's been getting in there with normal work... Robertson and Melancon had several days in between their appearances...
If they're stupid enough to waste a bullpen spot on Wang, then he should be available.
Yea, I played baseball all my life you fuckign moron. I played HS baseball with Jeff Bagwell at Xavier and college baseball at FIT with Tim Wakefield. You're so fuckign stupid its amazing.
The Phillies weren't gonna to let Gardner beat them by stealign. This is called CHESS. The Yankees brilliant counter moves to this were? Oh that's right let the Phillies pitcher throw meatballs down the middle and not swing at them. Real fuckign smart like you and your kind who elect idiots to office like Obama.
Great loss by Tex and Jeter. 2 losers who can't execute simple things. 100% loss on them and piss poor managing.
I don't like Wang in the pen, either. But they kinda needed to put him out there with Joba being a question mark and Aceves not able to be the long man after he went four innings on Thursday night.
What the hell does Obama have to do with any of this? You always go on these tangents into liberals/conservative nonsense. Shut up and stick to baseball.
Oh, and stop lying about your past.
Anon, I'm not even going to address you any futher. It's clear you're a moron if you're going to call Tex and Jeter morons and try to bring politics into this for no reason. Who the hell was talking about Obama. And who said I even boted for Obama? (Not saying I did or didn't.)
See ya, dumbass.
Gardner is the goat.
Nah, Tomko all the way. Can't give up that run.
Tomko shouldn't even be here...
Matsui is shit. He needs to sit.we have no threat off the bench
Really liar? You continually show you LIE like a rug. You always accuse people of doing stuff that they aren't doing. This is EXACTLY what liberals like you do. Just like the ones you elected and put into office in the great state of NY.You're not only a liar you bear false witness.
And, yes I played HS baseball with Jeff Bagwell in 1984 at Xavier High School in Middletown Connecticut. I was the backup 3rd baseman as a FRESHMAN. Tony Jaskot was our baseball coach. Baseball wasnt even Bagwell's best sport. His best sport was soccer. SO STFU imbecile.
I then went on to Florida Institute of Tech from 87-92 where Tim Wakefield went since he was originally from Eau Gallie. You know where Eau Gallie is you fuckign moron? How about Melbourne Florida?
Tim Wakefield went out with a girl named Camille who dumped him for my best friend AJ Dibono you fuccking nitwit. What a WRONG decision she made.
And, how bad is it, when they can't win by having your Ace give you 8 innings of 3 run baseball. Yea, they will win in the playoffs. NOT! Same old, same old. The Yankees simple can't beat good teams/pitchers. This is a never ending story going on almost 10 years. Who's been our GM since then?
How is Gardner the goat? He made a bad play in the third but it didn't matter Victorino singled right after both runs would of scored anyway.
The 10th inning lost you the game runners on 2nd and third no outs and you cant score. Also Tomko getting two outs and not being able to put away there 9 hole hitter was a joke.
Also why wasn't A-Rod guarding the line. You always guard the line in late innings. By managing by Girardi.
Why did Pena pinch run for Cano. Cano has speed, Pena is not that much faster. And Cano stole a base from Lidge yesterday.
Who's won more championships in those 10 years?
We all know you're lying. It's OK, we forgive you. Tool.
You can't assume Victorino would have singled. But even if he did, at most he scores Ruiz and Rollins MAYBE goes to 3rd. That's 1 run, not two.
A-Rod shouldn't be guarding the line.
Cano does not have speed.
A bad play in the third inning does not make you the goat. There were plenty of opportunities for the yankees to win the game.
Cano stole of Lidge yesterday he is not a slow runner, that was overmanaging by Girardi again.
And A-Rod should of guarding the line you always guard the lines in late innings. Why shouldn't he not be guarding the lines especially with a right handed hitter at bat.
On second thought, I think I will be picking Co-goats of the game; Brett Tomko and Brett Gardner.
I was going to go with co-goats as well, but the caught stealing tipped it in favor of Gardner.
You can become a goat when you don't do what is expected of you. You can expect him to keep it at just a single from Rollins when he hit it, but he didnt.
You don't put A-Rod on the line because it provides more space for a single to get through since he can only range to his left, rather than being able to dive to both sides.
Bruney needs to be on the DL again having him and Wang take up bullpen spots makes are pen to thin.
Brett Gardner and Hideki Matsui are real problems on this team. I understand Gardner has speed and is a threat but I really don't think hes much more then a blimp on the radar. For a guy that has speed I certainly feel like he uses it wrong. Why dive for a ball when you have no chance, when you could have just cut it off and prevented the guy from taking an extra bag? Why steal a bag and risk getting thrown out when anything in the Gaps will drive you in, if you have this "Speed"?
Matsui is growing frustrating, very much so. To me, every swing from him looks like a swing for the fences. The fact that hes a full-time DH til Next month is also very annoying. Right now we could use this DH spot to give our guys a half day and have Pena play the infield, and rotate the OF'ers so they get some rest.
Matsui, once he his able to play the field, should be shipped out of town. I hear Matt Cain is available and that SF is shopping him, maybe if hes still available offer a package based around Matsui.
But right now Matsui should be benched for a bit, hes lost, swinging for the fences and just look plain horrible.
-Coop
Also like to know where Aceves was today, I feel like he should have been used other then Tomko, his numbers a pretty good this year.
LOL... Matsui centered package for Cain... Matsui will play the field at most 8 games this year.
Anon, I explained why he wasn't guarding the line. Utley was on second base, so a single would score him. Why guard against the double and open up more holes for singles? There's no reason to guard the lines there.
Explain to me why you need to guard the line in that spot.
Matsui, Wang and Veras for Cain and Winn...Id love to make that work.
But probably not, get what you are sayn thou, Mats time is numbered, thank god this is the last year of his deal. Ichiro was in the MLB longer and held up better, we got burned, big time.
@ Coop
Gardner is the 4th outfielder on the team he doesn't even play everyday he is fine in his role. To say he is a problem on this team is ridiculous. As far as him stealing that was the manager decision Gardner did not do try to steal on his own in that situation.
But yes Matsui and Swisher too look horrible right now that is a problem on this team. Especially with no Posada and Nady.
Another problem with the team is AJ Burnett hasn't won a game in over a month. The yankees are not paying him 80 million to just pie people. He is suppose to be the number two starter.
I do agree that running for Cano was stupid, though. Cano isn't a speedster, but he's not slow by any means.
That really hurt us in the 10th because it not only took the bat out of A-Rod's hands, but put the bat in Pena's instead of Cano's.
Im not worried about AJ yet. He was still struggling in Toronto last year at this time before he turned it around. I think hes got 2 more starts before the panic button is fully pressed on him.
I know Gardner is a 4th OFer but I really don't like him. He hasnt done anything with his speed other then a inside the parker. Hes been caught stealing 30% of the time and with "speed" that not acceptable. Whats gunna happen to him once Nady is back? Hes gunna be the 5th OF behind a Swisher/Nady platoon.
Coop
I would love to trade for Cain with a package around Wang... but Veras and Matsui are barely an overall positive addition to the trade. Matsui would be atrocious in the outfield and Veras wouldn't be much of anything.
Never know maybe Veras learns how to use the inside part of the plate in the NL..seriously does this guy throw anything over the inside, watched him pitch on game day, every thing was away til he struck our rollins on the inside, nearly cremed my pants after seeing he actually went inside to someone.
Gardner's stealing at a 75% clip this year, while last year he had a 13-1 ratio... he's been just fine... although Todd Linden would seem to be of more help than Gardner right now.
But SF wouldn't trade for what he might do with them... they're trading for what he is now...
Is Angel Berroa still on the roster? if so, thats a waste of space and Linden should get a fucking chance.
Matsui, Veras, Wang and Berroa for a bag of balls and a Barry Bonds signed bat, FTW
where the heck is Marte? did we forget about him?
My God...
You guys seriously kill me. You want to get rid of Wang? He won 19 games two years in a row! Because he's taking some extra time coming back from major surgery, you want him off the team?
Holy shit...
some people take jokes to seriously, jc is one of these people.
Cain>Wang... Cain's 24 and Wang's 29...
As far as Im concerned, Wang should have been shipped for Johan Santana.
correction, *shipped in that package for Johan Santana.
All I'll say about Matsui now is he needs a few days off.
Correction, the Twinks shouldn't have let their pride get in their way, and accepted the superior package that was the Yanks' offer. They got absolute garbage for him.
I wonder if we had gotten Santana, would we have gotten Sabathia as well?
Dane,
I think it was one or the other. Personally I'd rather have CC, Hughes, Kennedy, and Melky, instead of just Johan.
If they would have gotten both Johan and CC, well that's another story, but I don't believe that was going to happen.
I don't think Hughes was ever in a trade scenario. I mean the Twinks definitely wanted him, but I don't think the Yanks ever offered him.
All I've ever heard was that if the Yanks wanted Johan it would have cost at least Hughes, Melky and Kennedy. I've also heard Cano and Wang was another deal the Twins proposed.
So what I'm saying is based on the rumor of Hughes, Kennedy, and Melky, because that seemed like the most realistic offer.
My goats of the game are
1)Joe Girardi for over managing and pulling Cano, leaving Nick Swisher in this line up, and knowing next to nothing about selecting a bullpen.
2) Nick Swisher, your antics are no longer amusing when you can't simply do your job like maybe catch a ball and make a play and hit decent pitches for singles instead of killing rallies with bad Giambi impressions.
3) Yankee Stadium itself, this stadium is the pitching staff's worst enemy.
Right, well I mean they should have just taken the one the Yanks proposed with was something like Melky, Kennedy, + 2 others(Marquez and Hilligoss?) over the absolute crap that they actually got in return.
