Winning pitcher - CC Sabathia (2-3)
Losing pitcher - Jeremy Guthrie (2-3)

If you're a Yankees fan you could not have asked for a better way to win a ballgame and stop a losing streak than the way things unfolded tonight. CC Sabathia showed exactly why the Yankees gave him all that money, shutting out the O's on four hits, striking out eight and walking just one. He did nothing but throw strikes as 79 of his 112 pitches found the zone. He has been slowly working his way into form this year and I tonight we finally saw the real CC. He didn't allow a hit from the second through the eighth, retiring 23 of 24 and at one point 16 in a row. He got into a little bit of trouble in the 9th, allowing the first two runners to reach base, but he then struck out the side to end the threat and the game. The big fella deserves a ton of credit for stepping up and performing tonight, even if it was against the Orioles.

Speaking about guys stepping up and performing, how about Alex Rodriguez? The guy hasn't seen a major league pitcher since last September (unless you count a few spring training games) and on the first pitch he sees he launches a ball deep into the stands in left for a three-run homer. Talk about giving the team a boost. I don't think anyone had a better description of the A-Rod homer than Nick Swisher who said it was “Amazing. Perfect. Storybook. Awesome.” A-Rod ended up going 1-for-4, but that homer was all the Yanks would need because as I said before CC was awesome.

The Yankees would add a fourth run in the seventh on a Johnny Damon RBI double, it was Damon's 20th RBI of the season.

Robinson Cano may have came out of his slump tonight, he went 2-for-4 with a double.

One of the unsung heroes of tonight's game was catch Francisco Cervelli, not only did he call a fantastic game, but after CC allowed the first two runners to reach base in the first he threw out Adam Jones on a double steal for what proved to be a huge out. Jones might have been safe, but it was still a very good throw by Cervelli. He also showed a lot of fire behind the plate and picked up his first major league hit.

OK, so the Yankees got the big win and big pitching performance that they needed, now the important thing is taking this game and building upon it. Phil Hughes starts tomorrow and it would be great for him and the team if he could rebound after the rough start he had against the Sox on Monday.

Not related to the game, but Dom DiMaggio past away today at the age of 92. He had been suffering from pneumonia. DiMaggio played 11 seasons with the Red Sox and although he wasn't his brother, but he did hit .298/.383/.419 in his career and was named to the AL all-star team seven times.

By the way, for a great story about the Yankees team chemistry, go check out this post from Peter Abraham.

CC with already 2 Complete games. He and Roy Halladay are old school type pitchers.

It's great to see, especially in a win this time.

This is why they got him.

I don't care what anyone says, this game turns the season around.

I hope you're right.

I thought Francisco Cervelli did a fantastic job at the plate both defense and offense. You couldn't have asked for a better replacement consider both veteran Yankee catchers are on the DL. This was a big win and if there was a time to get things in motion this game could be that spark we've all been waiting for.

Yeah I think Cervelli/Cash will do a good job. Obviously they wont produce Jorge numbers offensively. But they both are very good defensive catchers it wont be a drop off from Molina.

The Yankees badly needed a game like this one.

I am hoping this is the game that turns CC around for good.

As for Cervelli, we're going to love his fielding, but the real question is what will happen to his at-bats in a couple of weeks when the league catches up to him. Hopefully by that time Jorgie will be close to coming back.

I missed the whole game, just watched the highlights. Wow, was CC filthy. I guess he needs warm weather to get the right feel. Too bad, this would finally have been a great night for me to watch the game with my feet up, enjoying a beer or two. That reminds me, I am low on beer, gotta rectify that situation.

Not to be a downer, but the Yankees were still 2 for 9 with RISP. Gotta score those runs!

I loved Cervelli's passion behind the plate last night
