With Selena Roberts' book A-Rod: The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez coming out today I was wondering how many of you intended to read it. I am going to, and will probably pick up the book sometime next week and give it a read. It's not because I really care to judge A-Rod on his personal life and stuff like that, but I don't want to just hear story after story about the book without reading the thing myself. For example, if I had never read The Torre Years my opinion of the book would be false because it wasn't anything close to what the media made it out to be. In fact, it's one of the better books on the era that I've read.
So, will you be reading the book? I'll be placing a poll on the right sidebar for all of you to vote in and obviously, you can always leave your comments below.

I plan on reading it but wont be buying it, I'll get it from the library, dont want Selena getting mah money.
-cartman
no i could care less about A-Rod personal life.
I think I will pass on ARod. I read Torre's book (I recommend this) and am currently reading George. I'm disappointed in George because of all the errors in the book.
Agree with cartman, no $$$ to Selena from me.
Selena is a disgrace!
I agree with Bill. Torre's book is more of an insight to what went on in the locker room of one of the best dynasties in baseball. That's interesting and that deserves to be read. Selena's is a sports version of a National Enquirer compilation.
I'm going to hand $25 over to this woman when all the juicy details are already out? I don't think so.
Despite what Selena Roberts claims to believe, A-Rod is not an interesting character study. Interesting subjects aren't transparent to the entire world.
Selena found an easy mark here that inspires a lot of jealousy and anger because of his wealth and weak personality, and is running with it, simple as that.
Good for her for trying to make a buck, but she won't be getting any of it from me.
this lady is a bitch, a life ruining bitch .. just like most reporters celebrities are people too .. and this just pissses me of i guarentee more than half this book is one big lie .. EFF Selena Roberts .. she a dirty hoe and i didnt even leave her a tip ahahaha
You guys do realize it was A-Rod who cheated on the game, not Selena Roberts, right?
I know she doesn't look like the classiest individual for writing the book, but this is 2009, and this is far from the worst we've seen from people exploiting other people's celebrity.
Since when are you Yankee fans so loyal to this jerkoff A-Rod?
He's an ass hole, he doesn't deserve your loyalty.
Greg,
You're right, but she's done several interviews where she says she wrote the book because A-Rod is an interesting subject.
We already know A-Rod cheated by using steroids, that was great reporting to Roberts. Now she's just trying to make a buck from people who hate him.
That's all this is. And by the way, I didn't hear anything from her on why she didn't dig any deeper for the other 103. That's a story I'd like to read, not about A-Rod's tipping habits at Hooters or how he cheats on his wife.
Name 5 married ballplayers who DON'T cheat on their wife. Every single one of these guys does it.
Only naive moral crusaders don't see it.
I wouldn't give a penny to Selena Roberts
Can someone tell me why Selena Roberts is any worse than A-Rod himself?
I don't ever remember A-Rod slandering innocent kids, accusing them of rape then refusing to apologize when the allegations were proven to be false.
Her rush to judgement in the Duke case was horrendous. Her refusal to even show even the slightest bit of remorse for ruining three lives and helping get a coach fired is unforgivable.
Has A-Rod done anything close to that?
I'm not talking about the Duke thing, that's a totally different situation.
As far as just this one situation with writing about A-Rod's steroid use, tipping pitches, personal nonsense.
I am not going to read the book only because it does not sound all that interesting. I also don't wish to fund a character assassin. Not that A-Rods situation is anyones fault but his own. But looking at past work of Ms. Roberts it is clear that she is no so interested in just reporting on the facts as she is interested in making a name for herself at the expense of other people. She takes any lead weather or not it is credable and runs with it to the bitter end and beyond. It worked in her favor with the A-Roids thing but look at her "reporting" on the Duke scandal. Even after it became plainfully clear that the players were not guilty and the prosicutor was abusing his power Selina still treated them as if they were vile scum of the earth.
Roberts is a product of our society. If we as a country didn't love watching people have their lives ruined she wouldn't be writing this stuff.
I don't think some of you realize this.
Couldn't care less about the gossip. Alex did steroids and his legacy is forever tarnished, and he's obviously a self-centered man-child. What more do we need to know about the guy?
SI won't be reading it. From what I hear, she is attempting to make a book out of the fact that ARod did steroids by adding a load of crap that is basically hearsay.
As for Miss Roberts, she is a scumbag that buried the Duke lacrosse players without a shred of evidence and never so much as apologized. This is the type of garbage that passes for journalism these days.
She is a useless piece of crap in my book.
"As for Miss Roberts, she is a scumbag that buried the Duke lacrosse players without a shred of evidence and never so much as apologized. This is the type of garbage that passes for journalism these days."
By why did the media and the school take it so serioulsy? Nobody should have been fired and nobody's life should have been ruined until a proper investigation occurred and obviously everyone, including Roberts didn't do that.
Greg,
Why are you willing to forgive Roberts for her past transgressions which were far more damaging to other people?
She's allegedly a journalist, yet at that point she botched the biggest story of her life.
Nobody would have ever heard of Selena Roberts until she was one of the ones screaming about the Duke case. She was flat out wrong. That's on her resume.
As far as this book goes, we already know about A-Rod's steroid use. She has anonymous sources who speculate about his steroid use in HS.
Who cares?
She has anonymous sources that suggest he may have tipped pitches, an allegation that Buck Showalter disputed and a few former teammates have said weren't true.
As for his personal life, if his various dalliances are interesting to you, go ahead and read it. I couldn't care less who this moron bangs.
"By why did the media and the school take it so serioulsy? Nobody should have been fired and nobody's life should have been ruined until a proper investigation occurred and obviously everyone, including Roberts didn't do that."
Do you know how many people read the New York Times? Roberts was at the forefront of that disaster.
When the charges were dropped, she STILL went after those kids for having a stripper and basically said they deserved what they got for doing so.
Duke had a PR nightmare on their hands, and instead of preaching "innocent before proven guilty" Roberts (among others) was calling for heads to roll.
Many apologized for getting caught up in it, she has not. That's the difference.
I think most of us realize by now that Alex Rodriguez is a selfish egotist who craves the attention and affection of the public yet every move he makes turns us further against him. He's cheated on his wife, the Yankees and the game of baseball. You can't believe a word he says and he deserves every column inch of the bad publicity he gets. To be honest, I'm fed up reading about his off-the-field antics so I'll be passing on Ms Roberts' latest "revelations". As a fan, the only thing I'm interested in is seeing the team play well on the field. As we're going to be saddled with A-Rod for another nine years, I will continue to root for him as a player in the hope that he can return to doing the one thing he does well – hitting the ball out of the park.
Check out ESPN.com. Jim Caple really put a great spin on this.
Last night the MLB Network interviewed Selena Roberts and she is a total CUNT.
Im not a fan of Selena Roberts because of previous writings shes made. I think shes a terrible sports writer and is only out for her own self interests; like most in the press.
That being said, no I wont be buying, reading, nor giving any rats asses about Arod, his social life, his 'roid usage or his odd lifestyle. I dont care. I didnt care before, I dont care now. Not to speak for everyone, but I dont believe anyone truly gives 2 sh*ts. Arod isnt helping my team anymore, hes hurting it. Thats all I care about. Id rather see him go.
Gary, go report on how Boras clients continually test positive for roid usage. Be sure to include his previous ventures in the business of medicine.
The school had to take it seriously. I know the area well and it has a large minority population. For them not to take it seriously would have made the school look uncaring to the local minority population. With that said, the school also overreacted.
As for the media's reaction, well, as usual, the media overreacted. The idea that evil, rich white boys raped a young innocent black girl made for great headlines.
Had it been true, I would have been happy to personally send the guys away to jail for years.
But the story wasn't true and four young men had their reputations destroyed because of lies.
Had Ms. Roberts at least stood up and said she was wrong, I would at least have some respect for her. But she did not.
So I am not here defending ARod. He cheated and that pisses me off. His apology after getting caught was too little, too late.
Yeah, I'll still root for him while he is on the Yanks but I doubt I will ever get over the fact that he cheated and my kid will never wear his jersey. And if I had a vote, I wouldn't let him in the HOF either.
ARod cheated and potentially hurt himself physically and hurt the game of baseball. And whether you accept his apology or not, at least he gave one.
Ms Roberts rush to judgment forever labeled the lives of four young men and she never made even the slightest attempt to apologize.
That makes her a scumbag in my book.
Selena Roberts is just a selfish person who is trying to make some money out of this whole Arod thing. Some of her accusations are just plain ridiculous. Although I'm not an Arod fan and I think the guy is beyond saving as well, but Selena Roberts is even a worse human being.
Josh Hamilton came back from cocaine, heroin, crack and is now a "hero" in the eyes of many for his comeback.
A-Rod is coming back from steroids, steroids, again, steroids. And is being vilified. Does this make sense to anyone?
This morning on NBC I saw Matt Laurer interview Selena and man did he make her look silly. He got her to say that all the information is circumstantial.
Now here's my question.
If circumstancial evidence is not allowed in the courts, to gain a warrent or conviction, why is it allowed to be the basis of a book?
This whole thing is very disturbing, maybe disturbing is too strong but it bothers me how someone can invade another persons life, with little to no evidence and make a gain from it.
I think Joe has a great point. A-Rod can talk to kids and tell them not to make the mistakes he made just like Hamilton has been doing. If A-Rod becomes a born again and goes on a crusade of helping kids and not just caring about himself is he all of a sudden a hero again?
It truly has turned into a witch hunt when we truly dont know how much roids impacts a player in this game.
I will not be buying the book, that's for sure. I have no interest in reading it.
Tell you what book I will be reading soon-- Roy White's, "Then Roy Said to Mickey...". White is a very underappreciated Yankee & I bet he has lots of great stories in that book.
I'm not reading that fat pig's book of speculation without any substance.
Steve, I will definitely be checking out that book, along with George also.
As for the Costa and Laurer interviews I have not seen them but I'm sure she didn't come off too well.
Crossfire,
Good points.
I'm not defending or forgiving what Roberts did to the Duke players, I'm just ignoring it for the moment. But if that's why you guys don't like her I totally understand that. I'm just saying I don't dislike her any bit for writing about A-Rod.
Selena is the worst type of "journalist" there is. In the Duke case she played off the worst of humanity. These include Racism, sexism, and persecuted those kids basically for having money (which isnt a crime). In her A-ROD book, from what i have heard so far the majority of things she writes about are based on opinion and heresay. The former yankees that were quoted dont even have the balls to put their names to it. Unless these allegations are proven with a little thing called evidence,I hope AROD sues the crap out of her for slander and defimation of character. I understand they guy isnt perfect and has his own issues but enough already.
I hope he sues her too, but we all know he won't. He can't disprove anything she's saying.
Arod is not Clemens, he admitted his wrong doing and wants to move on. Clemens was pissed off that people found out and was so mad he started a dead end case.
Can't argue with you there Oaks.
Thanks Greg.
There are too many good baseball books out there to waste my time with this one.
You kidding, I can't wait to read it! I agree with Joe, I don't know why Selena would write a book about A-Rod's lies, but I still intend to read it.
I loved the Torre book too Greg.
It does not help her cause that A-Rods former manager and Texas teammates are saying that they did not hear of, nor did they witness the latest claims of A-Rod tipping pitches. I wonder did she even try to ask any of these guys about it? Buck Showalter is not managing right now I am sure he would be willing to talk a least a little to a reporter about this, especially since he went out of his way to deny it. In the Costas interview she sited Shane Spencer. Is he her only source and even when she sited him she said that he heard something about it.
I dont know if anyone is reading it, but I picked it up from my local library this morning. I am up to the part where team-mates called Alex "bitch-tits."
I have a problem with this. She makes suggestions he used steroids with no real proof other then what he admitted. Now, as an avid weight-lifter, I've always had my wonderings about anabolic steroids. After the story 1st broke I waited to hear what he used. When it was announced that it was Boli otherwise known as Primobolan I immediatly checked the stuff out.
Primo is not a typical steroid. Primo is a fat cutter not a bulk builder. Primo, to be used effectivly needs to be done on a 12 week cycle, with the body using about 500-600mg of Primo each week.
And unlike other steroids, Primo has an anti-estrogen ether that will not allow the body to estrogen or convert excess testosterone into estrogen. So what this is saying is that Primo can not give you 'bitch-tits.' Now I wonder if a team mate really game forward, or if this was Selena making something up since it was an "anonymous" source.
to produce estrogen or convert*
I've also heard that about Primo, so I'm not sure what to make of it. Personally I think he was using a lot more than we know, but that goes for a lot of guys out there.
Primo...what does Italian sausage have to do with anything?
thats Premio
What A-Rod did was wrong no doubt about it. How Selena Roberts cracked the case somehow getting his name she had to have done something illegal THEN she writes a book about it to make a quick buck is wrong. You don't see books biographies about Barry Bonds or Mark McGwire like this. She also started this whole baseball drama about should the other players who failed the test names be shown by singling out A-Rod. A-Rod shamed baseball by using it and Selena Roberts is killing baseball with all this drama. I hope nobody buys her book. IMO
selena roberts got the duke case wrong. she said the accused did it and of course it was later determined they were innocent and the DA had to resign. she has zero credibility.
She created a real problem is what she did. People like her really need to look in the mirror and ask how she will be remembered, b/c if she thinks shes a saint or a heroine, shes wrong, shes just as bad as Arod. He used drugs to cheat the sport, she wrote a book about it for fiancial gain.
HELLL NO
does anyone know if yesterdays game got rescheduled yet?
Believe me people I don't consider her a good person, a good writer, a good anything, I'm just slightly interesting in reading the book.
I'll get it at the thrift store, shouldn't take long. I have a hard time reading a story that's full of unamed sources. It would be like me writing a story about Greg and his blog. I won't ask Greg any questions directly, but I'll get all my answers from everyone who commnets on his blog. Will they be accurate answers? Who cares I got a story to write.
I forgot about the Duke thing! She's a smelly looking twat, and she's even more unlikeable than AR.
Mike
Yes I will be reading it, just because I love reading about baseball and players. Regardless on ho iw represents them, it is good to get both sides of every story.
