(Triple-A) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (41-30) lost to Syracuse (39-32) 6-3: Box Score - Recap
The SWB Yankees dropped their 5th game in a row in a 6-3 loss at Syracuse. It was the 3rd loss in a row to the Chiefs. The loss drops the 1st place Yanks to 41-30 and cuts their lead to only 2 games. It's the smallest lead the Yanks have had since April 15th.
Xavier Nady Update: He played in his 2nd rehab game tonight, and went 0-2. He struck out in the 1st with a runner at 3rd and 1 out. In the 3rd, he grounded out with Jackson at 2nd base. He left the game after the 4th inning. He had at least 3 balls hit to him that he fielded and had to make throws on. Accoring to the YES network postgame show, Brian Cashman said that Nady took himself out of the game. That can't be good news.
PITCHING: George Kontos got the start for the Yankees and took the loss (3-4). It was his first start in almost 2 weeks because of all the rainouts SWB has had lately. The Chiefs got 2 runs in the 1st on a double and 2-run homer to take a 2-0 lead. Kontos got roughed up for 3 more runs in the 3rd on a double and 3 RBI singles to take a 5-0 lead. A couple scoring calls by the official scorer could have easily been called errors instead of hits and helped Kontos ERA. Line: 3.0 IP, 5 runs, 6 hits, 1 K, 2 BB.
BULLPEN: Zach Kroenke came on to pitch 3 scoreless-no-hit innings, the 4th - 6th. He struck out 5, including striking the side in the 6th, but he also gave up a walk in each inning.
Anthony Claggett came on to pitch a scoreless 7th. He had 2 K's, 1 single and 1 walk in the inning.
Mark Melancon came on to pitch the 8th. He gave up an unearned run to give Syracuse the final 6-3 score. He hit the first batter he faced with a pitch. The runner moved up to 3rd on an infield error, and ground out. A wild pitch scored the run. Melancon was saved from more damage by a fine running catch by Austin Jackson in deep center to end the inning.
OFFENSE: The Yanks left a small third world country stranded on the basepaths again in this game. They stranded runners in scoring position in each of the first 4 innings. In the 6th, they finally broke thru when Colin Curtis hit a 3-run homer (1) to cut the Syracuse lead to 5-3.
NOTES: Casey Fossum has opted out of his SWB contract. A replacement for the rotation has not been named yet. Kevin Russo has reached base in 19 straight games. Austin Jackson went 1-4 with a double. Jesus Montero-C, and LHP Manny Banuelos were picked to play in the 2009 Futures Game to be played during All-Star weekend in St. Louis.
