Here's this week's cover of SI:
Tom Verducci wrote an article from Tom Verducci about Harper, here's some of the highlights:
Golf has Tiger Woods, basketball has LeBron James, hockey had Wayne Gretzky and military history had Alexander the Great, but baseball, like jazz, is a discipline that does not easily engender prodigies. Since 1967, only one player has hit a home run in the major leagues before his 19th birthday: Robin Yount of the '74 Milwaukee Brewers. The sport is so skill-specific that even the best, most physically mature young players typically must endure several levels of minor league apprenticeship to learn the game. His goals?
So good and so young is Bryce Harper, however, that he explodes baseball convention. He has hit the longest home run in the history of Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays, and he did so in January, at age 16, with a blast that would have flown farther than the measured 502 feet had it not smashed off the back wall of the dome. Still only 16, Harper stands 6'3", weighs 205 pounds, has faster bat speed than Mark McGwire in his prime and runs so fast that he scored on wild pitches six times this season from second base. As a catcher he picks off runners from his knees, and when he pitches, he throws a fastball that has been clocked at 96 mph. ...
... Harper has been compared to Justin Upton, Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr., each a freakishly advanced high school player and each the top overall pick of his draft. But Harper, say the baseball men who are paid to make such assessments, has the ability as a sophomore that the aforementioned trio had as seniors. That is why Harper—to his own approval—is best compared to James.
"Be in the Hall of Fame, definitely," says Harper when asked by Verducci about his goals. "Play in Yankee Stadium. Play in the pinstripes. Be considered the greatest baseball player who ever lived. I can't wait"Here's a video of Harper working out at the Yankees spring training complex this February, and in a home run derby at Tropicana Field - the day he hit the 502 foot blast:

If only...
There is zero chance we'll be able to draft him. So, unless he demands a trade or something, lol..
i wish
oh.
my.
god.
i'm a soph in HS- and omfg- that is amazing.....
i want this kid in pinstripes
I didn't read the article. Does Verducci tell us who his agent is? Scott Boras?
Is it possible that he moves to the dominican or something and the yankees sign him out of there for a record amount? If I was his advisor that is what I would try to do. Have him make multimillions by the time he was 17 and get him in the bigs sooner. He also could have an open bidding war for his services. If he wants to be a Yankee, that is how he could do it.
Is this legal?
We can all dreamed of unsigned hype..
if he wants it enough he can enter the draft, refuse to sign , then become undrafted free agent and sign with the yankees.
If he refuses to sign, he still wouldn't be an undrafted free agent. And most teams definitely would take a shot at him.
If I am reading everything correctly, I believe he could move to the DR and maintain residence there and be signed next year by the highest bidder
Yeah, but his mom said that they weren't going out of the country...
He is on the cover of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED.
BIG JINX
LOVE TO SEE HIM MAKE IT, BUT I WOULD PUT MONEY ON IT HE WILL NOT. GREAT SWING .. AND HE IS A LEFTY. IMAGINE HIM IN YANKEE STADIUM. OMG.
Sorry Steve, yes Scott Boras is one of his "advisers" now, so I'm sure he'll end up being his agent.
he is a bum i dont want him
lol... How is he a bum?
I think he wants to be #11 in Monument Park.
If he can bat like that in the MLB we might be looking at the next A-Rod or Albert Pujols generation.
He's using an aluminum bat in the homerun derby. Let's see him do it with woood! I don't think so. People really have this kids balls in their mouth. Let's see what he does in the minors before we start calling him the best prospect the world has ever seen.
anon...key word there is prospect...just cause he's called the best "prospect" obviously doesn't automatically mean he will be a great player...hence "prospect"...there have been a lot of good looking prospects that have not panned out...everyone who is not in the majors is pretty much labeled a prospect...do you suggest we sign someone who can't hit a baseball...no..you sign someone with potential...
Brien Taylor.........
fits the term prospect....they made a good move drafting him...he was lights out...then he goes and does something dumb...can't hold that against the yanks...it's all a game...no one knows how the players will turn out...if they did, there wouldn't be any duds...its all about how projections...
I don't think anyone here is saying he's a can't-miss prospect. Nothing is guaranteed with a 16-year-old.
The #1 picks in baseball have historically not produced great results. The names Brien Taylor and Ben McDonald immediately come to mind. I think this kid has all the talent in the world a la Josh Hamilton, but he is far from a sure thing!
The hype on Bryce Harper is just starting. He is finally playing pro ball, and it seems like he has all the skills that made Josh Hamilton so highly regarded out of high school.
