News & Notes

- Joba Chamberlain has made six appearances against the Indians including one start. In those games he's 0-1, with a 6.75 ERA. In 10.2 innings he's allowed eight runs on seven hits, walked seven and struck out 13. He's made three appearances at Progressive Field, all in relief, and has not allowed a run in four innings. He started against them back on April 17th and the new stadium and allowed five runs on six hits, walked five and struck out four in 4.2 innings pitched in a no decision.

- In three career starts against the Yankees, Jeremy Sowers is 1-1, with a 6.60 ERA. He made one start against the Yanks last year and got a no decision. In 5.1 innings he allowed three runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out three.

- The Yankees have not committed an error in 17 straight games, tying them with the 2006 Red Sox for the MLB record.

- Derek Jeter has a 14-game hitting streak, and Mark Teixeira has hit safely in 13 straight. Teixeira is also coming off a monster month of May, hitting .330/.391/.748 with 13, and 34 RBI.

- Why the hell is Angel Berroa playing?

- The Indians placed RHP Rafael Betancourt on the 15-day DL with a strained right groin. To replace him they recalled LHP Tony Sipp from Triple-A Columbus.

UPDATE 5:41 p.m.: According to Peter Abraham, Jose Molina re-inured his strained left quad in an extended spring training game today down in Florida. He will most likely head to New York to be examined. Looks like he won't be coming back anytime soon.

Also according to Pete, Xavier Nady tried to start his throwing program today but had to stop after he felt discomfort in his right elbow. He will attempt to throw again tomorrow.

yeah why is Berroa playing? I mean, i understand they want to give A-rod a break at third but how come Berroa and not Pena.

Anonymous said...

theres goes 18 in a row

Greg Cohen said...

I know Pena hasn't been hitting, but based on defense alone Berroa shouldn't start over Pena.

Anonymous said...

agreed

Anonymous said...

Pena has trouble with left handed pitchers. With a strikeout pitcher in Chamberlain on the mound and no Damon and Matsui maybe Girardi wants a better bat in Berroa than Pena.

Also I know I might be nitpicking but wouldn't it be better putting Melky in right and Swisher left.

Anonymous said...

Thank god we have Cervelli.

Anonymous said...

So Angel Berroa is still alive?

Hard news to take on Nady and Molina. If we lose Molina for the year, I would like to see Cervelli catch 3 games a week with Posada sitting or in the DH role so Cervelli's devolopment won't get hindered.

If Nady needs to get Tommy-John...Hello Mr. Holliday...I see the Yanks sellin' whatever we have from the farm for this guy..Right Move? Probably not, but who knows.

Anonymous said...

Mark Derosa would be a great trade option if Nady is done for the season.

Greg Cohen said...

Very true, Anon.

A lot depends on how well Melky and Gardner do over the next few weeks.

Anonymous said...

@ Greg thats a good point.

If Melky keeps playing the way he is playing and Garnder in his last 47 at bats is hitting 319 with a 385 on base along with Swisher that is a nice trio of players.

They need bullpen help

Hey Greg,
I found this site

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/create-online-petition

Anyone else thinking of the Gate 2 thing...I can't start it bc my dumb parents dont let me give out my address.

Anonymous said...

We used that site where I work. We used it to get a better couch and coffee machine. Worked like a charm when customers started signing it, haha, aahh the good ole' days.

Coop.

That's bad news about Nady. Hopefully his arm heals. We could use his bat. Stinks that Molina hurt himself again but then again Cervelli is doing well so it's not such a big deal.

dudes, hit up, bostondirtdogs.com they now have pink red sox hats with watermelons on them, it says something about scratch and sniff but i dont know if its legit, frikkin hilarious though.

daneptizl said...

Joba needs to work on lowering that 5.0 BB/9

Anonymous said...

yeah, the walks are a little much, looks good so far tonight, nice seeing him hit high 90's

Anonymous said...

btw, those hats are freaking hilarious, just dont want a yankee version of that p.o.s

Greg Cohen said...

Joba in the first: Fastball sitting at 95 mph, and hit 97. Slider and curve look really sharp. Now if he can only continue this throughout.

daneptizl said...

A change-up sighting as well.

Greg Cohen said...

hahahaaha nice hats.

Anonymous said...

oh no the heckler from tampa is in cleveland

Anonymous said...

'Gulls are everywhere, whats in the grass @ progressive/jacobs there that them b-stards like.

daneptizl said...

Still can't call strikes...

Greg Cohen said...

Anon, don't get me wrong, I really like DeRosa and I think he would be a great addition to the team. I just think the Yankees themselves will wait before making a deal.

Greg Cohen said...

Ugh, they do have a Yankees version of those hats.

Anonymous said...

Jeter makes the bunt look easy at times, like the way he reloads the bat, you just know your know your screwed.

daneptizl said...

Damn... Swisher couldn't even beat that out...

daneptizl said...

Not a productive inning...

Greg Cohen said...

Jeter is a great bunter.

At least they got a run, but Swisher really screwed up that inning. I think he's getting a little overaggressive and swinging too early in the count.

Logan. said...

Jeter nice play there buddy.

He is a great bunter, hes a great fileder too as we just saw.

Greg Cohen said...

Normally I wouldn't agree with that, Optimus, but he's been very good this year. Amazingly, this has (so far) been his best year defensively.

daneptizl said...

Cano is slow as hell too... my goodness a middle infielder...

Logan. said...

Cano killed that one quick.

Greg Cohen said...

I'm going to guess that the fastball above his head was intentional. You can't miss by that much and then throw a perfect curve on the outside corner on the next.

daneptizl said...

I don't mind it. One to Martinez would have been better though...

Anonymous said...

The sight of Berroa kills me.

Logan. said...

Wicked. Jobas got some nasty stuff tonight. Homer was a bummer though.

Greg Cohen said...

True, the homer was annoying, but his stuff has been great tonight.

Logan. said...

Melky gave me a scare there for a moment. Geez.

daneptizl said...

Need to hand a crooked number next inning...

Greg Cohen said...

I just looked at the hourly forecast and satellite, it's not supposed to start raining in Cleveland until 11. What is Kay making a big deal about?

Greg Cohen said...

Wow, what a great play. Let's hope he's not hurt.

daneptizl said...

Joba: I don't need you, Angel.

Logan. said...

JOBA IS A BEAST YO!

crossfire said...

Holy shit, what a great play by Joba!!!

daneptizl said...

lmao, his hangtime was funny as hell...

Logan. said...

love the defense this inning.

crossfire said...

Pettitte and CC were having a good laugh about it. lol

Greg Cohen said...

Hahahah now they got Dave Eiland involved.

Anonymous said...

73 pitches after 5 innings is too high again. And, why is Posada playing catcher again? This is ridiculous. This organization has a love affair with old men. And, what a terrible throw on a pitchout.

Greg Cohen said...

73 through five is really not bad at all. That's 14.5 pitches per inning. If he keeps up that pace he'll be at 102 after 7.

Logan. said...

Sowers has soured.

Drew said...

Nah he's going for the triple play. You just wait and see.

Logan. said...

no he aint, hes out of the game now, hes soured.

Drew said...

No wonder I didn't get a callback for the manager position when Torre left.

Luckily the umpires are garbage, jobs should be opening up soon in that department.

daneptizl said...

I thought the guy was serious... then thought he was joking... but if he's serious... lulz.

Logan. said...

Arods classic choke.

Greg Cohen said...

What is Posada doing?

Anonymous said...

Cano needs a big hit here.

Greg Cohen said...

Well, that sucked.

daneptizl said...

This is ridiculous... I could drive someone in with bases loaded and no outs... pathetic...

Logan. said...

holy shit, way to do nothing with everything fellas.

Greg Cohen said...

I know this sounds weird, but Joba needs to pick up the offense now, and go out and throw a quick inning.

Anonymous said...

Ahhhh, the nightly Mark Teixeira web gem.

Anonymous said...

Bwahahahahaha! Bases loaded with no outs and they get nothing. Let me guess JORGE POSADA was involved. Gee, who couldn't have guessed that! Posada SUCKS. He comes back and instantly ruins this team, mojo and momentum. Hes a killer at catcher and a killer at the plate. Flipping ridiculous that it only took 2 games for Posada to return and this team looks EXACTLY like it did BEFORE he was injured. Pathetic.

Greg Cohen said...

Nobody cares.

...

There's that quick inning I was talking about.

daneptizl said...

"Bwahahahaha"?

Are you the official 'bad guy'? Mojo Jojo Jr?

Greg Cohen said...

hahahahaha

Logan. said...

Unfortunatly Posada can perform like a leech sometimes.

Logan. said...

Got Melky? Callin' it

Logan. said...

or not.

daneptizl said...

Wow, I didn't know... Garner in May: .327/.417/.538

Greg Cohen said...

I knew he had a good month, but I didn't know he did that well. Impressive.

Anonymous said...

popeyes chicken suscks, screw that commercial. lol.

Greg Cohen said...

Atta boy Swish!

Logan. said...

..what are you watching? what commercial?

daneptizl said...

There we go...

I'm surprised one of those birds hasn't gotten clocked yet.

Greg Cohen said...

Winfield killed a seagull in Toronto once.

daneptizl said...

Vizcainooooo

Brian Danuff said...

Alright A-Rod! 5-1 Yanks!!

daneptizl said...

lmao... I can laugh at it.... but what the hell was Tex doing...

Greg Cohen said...

Big hit by A-Rod, stupid base running by Tex though. You can't get hung up like that.

Unknown said...

I'm convinced they should bench swisher for the home games and make him play only on the road. He's a different player on the road.

Greg Cohen said...

You might be on to something Robert.

Woodism said...

Greg I think Joba read your velocity posts

daneptizl said...

Joba seems like he's done... oh well, we'll need him in the playoffs...

Greg Cohen said...

hahahaha,

Tonight he's got some of the best stuff he's had in a while. And 95 pitches through seven isn't bad at all. Very good start for Joba.

Greg Cohen said...

Wow, looks like he's gonna stick with Joba.

daneptizl said...

What in the world is he thinking...

Brian Danuff said...

Well, if he could go out there and not injure his shoulder, then why not?

Greg Cohen said...

Can Kay at least wait till he finishes the inning?

Unknown said...

I'm a little surprised they are keeping him in. They benched Phil with 101 pitches through 8. I guess the heat was too much for Phil but the bugs aren't bothering Joba. This is one of Joba's best start he's ever had hands down.

daneptizl said...

I'm talking about Pena bunting/striking out...

Jenny Talia said...

BOOM!

thats wut im talkin bout/

daneptizl said...

lmao, the Joba meter...

Greg Cohen said...

lol, I can't wait to hear Francesa tomorrow.

Capone said...

Gotta be happy with a 5-2 trip. Joba was nasty, but the debate will only grow as to where he should be. Now we get to go home and play HR Derby with Texas.

Anonymous said...

and that's why we should leave joba as a starter...sure he'll have some bad games...part of the learning process...but his potential is big...

Anonymous said...

@ Robert

I think Girardi kept Joba in the 8th because it was still a close game. The Hughes game in Texas was a blowout.

Mario said...

wow fans, we've weathered the early injuries, struggles, slow starts, etc, & are where we need to be, 1st place, unbeleiveable, & everyone is getting along, joking laughing together, going to other events together, you gotta love it,

crossfire said...

I think Girardi kept Joba in the game to appease the "Joba to the bullpen" fans. lol
