News & Notes
- The weather for this series does not look too promising and there is rain in the forecast for each game. Here's tonight's hourly forecast from Weather.com. Based on that it looks like they'll get the game in, but Weather.com has fooled me before.
- In nine career starts against Boston A.J. Burnett is 5-0, with a 3.52 ERA. At Fenway he's 3-0, with a 2.93 ERA in four career starts. He's faced the Sox once this year and in that game squandered a 6-0 lead. In five inning he allowed eight runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out three in a no decision.
- Josh Beckett is 8-4, with a 5.80 ERA in 14 career starts against the Yankees. This year he's 1-0, with a 9.00 ERA in two starts. He's allowed 11 runs on 20 hits, walked 5 and struck out 8 in 11 innings pitched.
- Melky Cabrera was named May's Pepsi Clutch Performer of the month.

- Peter Abraham is reporting that Brian Bruney has a bullpen session today, he threw all of his pitches in the bullpen and said he felt great.
- Mariano Rivera has worked three days in a row and four out of five days so he's likely unavailable tonight.
I will post draft updates throughout the night here and in the comments section.

UPDATE 8:48 p.m.: Here's some good news on Brian Bruney from Marc Carig:
Well, at least there's some good news tonight. After throwing another bullpen session on Tuesday, Yankees reliever Brian Bruney could return as early as next week, manager Joe Girardi said. Bruney said he felt pain-free after throwing all of his pitches in a 25-pitch sessionBut before making a return, Girardi said that Bruney (right elbow) would likely have to make at least one minor league rehab appearance.
"If he comes through today OK and feels good tomorrow and in his next bullpen session, I would think that next week is a possibility at some point," Girardi said. "I'm not sure if it would be early in the week, but I think at some point."
DRAFT UPDATE 10:00 p.m.: With the 76th pick in the draft the Yankees selected John Murphy, a high school catcher from The Pendleton School in Florida.
Stick around and discuss the game

I was hoping Girardi would use Gardner tommorow. Because if Gardner gets on against Wakefield he can run on him like crazy.
Gardner does struggle against Beckett. Odd decision to rest Matsui against Beckett. You would think Joe would of rested him against Tampa.
Maybe he like's Gardner's speed out there tonight, who knows.
By the way, do you like the vintage Sox logo? It's from 1908. Should I stick with that one or go with this one or this one?
Go yankees I am representing for us up here at fenway...would love a win tonight...
Nice, good for you Rob, have a great time.
I actually like the logo you have posted for the sox greg..looks like it was designed by the same guy that came up with the citi field inaugural season logo...
Well, I was just watching BPTV on YES and a very energetic meteoroligist told Chris Shearn that this game will be played, so much so he gave a big Y-E-S!
So according to him, tonight's game will be played.
-DRAFT UPDATE-
The Pirates select C Tony Sanchez. So much for the Yankees having a shot.
at him, I mean.
Also good decision using Melky in right. Left field with the monster is easy to play Swisher should be fine there. There is more ground in right that Melky can cover.
Tarp is getting taken off, supposed to start on time. YES!
Nice.
This series means a lot to the Yanks.
First, you don’t want to be shown up by the Red Sox for the 3rd straight series.
Next, you don’t want to let the Red Sox gain ground. We got to start taking more than a .5 game or 1 game lead. Sweeping them or taking 2 of 3 will put us in a good position come the All-Star Break.
Finally, it’s the freakin Red Sox! The Yankees have owned them every time up to 2003. It’s time to show Boston we are still the better team, and we could kick their butt any time any place.
Plus, loosing to the Red Sox with A-Rod and a hot hitting Teix in the lineup will mean no excuses.
So let's go out there and kick their ass!
Go Yankees!!!
I agree completely, YB.
Here are the top five picks:
1. Washington Nationals -- Stephen Strasburg, RHP, San Diego State
2. Seattle Mariners -- Dustin Ackley, OF, Univ. of North Carolina
3. San Diego Padres -- Donovan Tate, OF, Cartersville (Ga.) H.S.
4. Pittsburgh Pirates -- Tony Sanchez, C, Boston College
5. Baltimore Orioles -- Matt Hobgood, RHP, Norco (Calif.) H.S.
Yep. Who do you think the Yanks will pick? I think Brett Jackson.
UPDATE
7. Atlanta Braves -- Mike Minor, LHP, Vanderblit University
I wish I could answer that question, but I really don't know that much about these kids.
I want them to get the best player on the board. I don't care what position he plays. That's the best answer I can give you.
Good answer. I don't know about the prospects either, I just saw Brett Jackson on Yankees.com so he popped into my mind.
Is it just me or does Selig really enjoy saying "On the clock"?
He's messed up so many times it's not even funny. When the Orioles picked, he was like:
In the first round of the 1990-no 2009 first player draft,
I cracked up.

Burnett needs to really work on his control. All these walks are just totally unacceptable.
Look at how badly Burnett missed on that pitch to Ortiz. Supposed to be inside and it was right out over the plate.
Burnett seriously needs to start pitching like the guy we paid over $80. His control sucks.
Four-pitch walk.
This is a joke.
Unbelievable. Way to make fatso's bat look fast.
Burett really stinks.
4-0. Wonderful.
What a joke of a game. I love how we come to Boston and suck a fat one.
This is pathetic. Burnett can't throw a goddamn strike, we can't field the ball....
Time to watch the Stanley Cup Finals.
Burnett is screwing up my first trip to fenway. I am about to pull him myself.
We have to comeback. We need this game.
Great defense Arod, any other team turns a DP there. Arod is going to solve all of our problems. Imagine having an IF as Jeter and Arod? LOL neither one has any range and our both old.
Yup, that Cashman sure can build a team. A losing team that is. This is exactly why this team can't beat good teams. I am so sick of this GM its not funny. Cashman should be fired on the basis that he can't beat the Red Sox.
Beckett is a tough guy to comeback on. Burnett needed to be good this game... not suck. Should have taken the suspension and pitched Hughes.
You know, A.J., you have made the club house a lot looser, and I can appreciate that. But your pitching stinks.
And what's worse than the money is that they've got this bum for five years.
They should have signed Derek Lowe.
This is what we paid $80 million for?
First of all, the ball four was a strike when Beckett threw that pitch, and Cano has to make that play.

Burnett sux ass
Burnett is a complete joke.
Two more walks in this inning. NICK GREEN of all people doubles...
90 pitches in three innings.
Disgrace. Burnett should be absolutely ashamed of himself. He's choking in every single big game.
AJ Burnett=ANOTHER CASHMAN BLUNDER.
Only in America can a retard make a $80M mistake (or $40m Pavano, etc..) and still have a job. You get what you deserve. Just wait there's more to come to..
Yankees suck!
With Wang going tomorrow looks like they'll at least drop two of these, especially when you consider the shape the bullpen will be in after tonight.
Yanks draft Slade Heathcott, an outfielder....
Go sox!
Slade Heathcott to the yanks
NO
Unbelievable how a guy pitches so well against Boston in his career and then when he puts on a Yankee jersey they absolutely rock him.
I'd much rather see Hughes take a shot at it tomorrow but instead we're going to take the loss before the first pitch is even thrown because Wang has "earned it" with two 19 win seasons.
I love how Beckett just laughs at the notion that A-Rod protects Teixeira and just walks him twice.
I like this.
Love the clutch hitting tonight, too....
Please, they're not gonna hit anything. Beckett is on his A game and theres nothing the Yankees can do about it. I wouldn't be surprised to see a sweep.
Shut it, Hitler. I'll blitzkrieg your ass.
The Yankees know they have zero chance of coming back against Beckett. How much of a let down do you think it is for them to have Burnett going out there and pitch like shit?
Tomko struck Youkilis out twice in that at-bat - these umps are a joke.
The Yankees are the Red Sox daddies.. plain and simple.
Wait no.. other way around.
Really? Youkilis steals second?
well hopefully CC can salvage one game from this series since the Wang blows game 2 tomorrow
oh sweet, Hitler is back, Hitler amuses me.
I hate to say I told you so, but they should have started Veras.
VERAS!!!!
Making it real easy on Beckett. Can't remember the last time he dominated them this much.
Here's the entire first round of picks:

the worst is that there might not be a more annoying fuck than beckett in all of baseball. when i see him I hear David Mathews Band. arrrggg!!! want to shove ice picks in my ears.
Well, if we can still take the next 2 I would not be too upset.
I see Hitler returned. First time in a while huh?
YB, guess you're going to be upset since Wang is an auto L tomorrow.
You know what really sucks?
It looks like game three of this series will be rained out. So they'll lose tonight and probably tomorrow with Wang on the mound, and then the one game they can win will get rained out.
Yeah. But ya never know.
Beckett's dealing.
I don't even think they would win on Sunday. They've never really faced Penny so obviously wouldn't be able to hit him and CC curls up like a scared little girl in big games. I'd welcome a rain out.
I never get too down on the Yanks, but tonight I'm pretty pissed.
And actually, Wang isn't a total lock for a L. What if the Yanks jump on Wakefield early tomorrow and take a commanding lead, big enough that Wang couldn't possibly cough it up unless he pitches like a 8-year old.
Sunday?
Will, here's your boy.
You mean if like the Yankees score 15 runs in the first YB? Then maybe it will be a just 1 run game.
VEEEEEEEERAS!!!!
YB, I'm not really down on the Yankees, I'm down on A.J. Burnett. A-Rod's error didn't help, but still, this is totally on Burnett.
I hope Veras meant to do that.
You make a good point there Will.
Looks like Beckett may be done. Maybe the Red Sox's bullpen will pitch bad for once, ya never know.
Why are you all giving Wang no chance tomorrow? He didn't pitch too badly against the Rangers. And he is Chien Ming Wang. Jeeze. Give the guy a fair shake.
I know tonight has totally sucked, but jeeze.... Chill out.
Dont question Veras. Everything is intentional. They call him "Major Mr.Intentional". Major is for major league too, cause he's major league.
I'm sorry, but at this point I have no faith in Wang, especially against the Sox.
Sox will eat him alive, then puke him up and serve him back to Girardi for dessert.
Veras reminds me of this guy:

hahahahaha
this thread is now about anything but this game.

i loled
Hahahaha, where the hell did you find that?
the interwebs.
http://luapula.wordpress.com/2008/07/12/this-settles-it/
I don't even give Beckett all the credit for this one. The Yankees just shut down when they play this team it really is pathetic. And you can tell that this winless streak against Boston is weighing on them judging by some of their comments yesterday. This team is absolutely gutless.
Nick Green?
lol when Nick Green hits a shot like that you should just call it a day
Haha Nick Green, he's actually killed us this year. They have the Yankees number in every way possible.
The sixth inning was bad. Beckett throw a 6 pitch inning to Jeter, Damon and Teixeira. That is a joke I guess they have early reservations.
But Burnett cost the game he didn't give the team a chance to compete. Bottom line yankees need to straighten out Burnett. His fastball command has been horrible. Having Wang and Burnett both struggling is a bad sign.
First of all what idiot Yankee GM or manager came up with this rotation vs. the Red Sox? Ever heard of matching up or is that concept to difficult for the Yankee brass?
The same idiots running the Yankees are the same idiots running this country. No wonder we are bankrupt.
Nice team you built Cashman. YOu're a real winner.
Who would you have started anon?
Nice hit by Gardner good to see someone on the team still trying to give an effort.
With the 76th pick in the draft the Yankees selected John Murphy, a high school catcher from The Pendleton School in Florida.
Anon would have started Ted Haggard.
I think Boston is gonna win the World Series this year. So far it looks like the only team that could possibly stop them in the AL is the Yankees and we all know that's not gonna happen.
They have an offense that lines up with the Yankees, a far superior bullpen, and a rotation that is pretty even. Not to mention they actually have guts. It's a sad time in this so called "rivalry".
I would have set up my rotation for the Red Sox series 2 weeks in advance like ALL forwarding thinking teams because this series is so important. The Yankees dont think forward. They think backwards. That's why they haven't won a playoff series in 7 years. Taht's why they paid $80m for Burnett who got shelled last time he pitched again the Red Sox and so our genius management decides to go with him again. Ditto for Pavano and ALL the other bums Cashman has signed.
Then our brilliant GM and manager, who you are all sticking up for right now cuz you're dumb, decides to have Wang pitch tomorrow. Another brilliant move from the clowns that run Yankee land. Obviously, all the clowns are not in the circus.
Plus, I would put Aceves in the rotation. Maybe he could beat Boston because we know these FN bums can't. What a pussy ass team and organization. Burnett sucks. Pettitte sucks. Wang is laughable...it must be that great off-season workout the Yankees FO has.
Maybe our award winning FO should call up Kennedy and let hiim pitch a big game? Even with his aneurism the Yankee brass could justify it. That's how dumb they are. You would all be cheering it on with your positive garbage. This pathetic team can barely beat the BELOW .500 Rays. Keep sticking up for Cashman. Vote him in again like Obama. If we last that long. All wise ones.
Which three pitchers would you have going this series?
I am not concerned with Wang tommorow. Girardi will have a short leash on Wang if he struggles and Hughes and Aceves are well rested.
I think anon would like to catch Ted Haggard.
Looking forward to watching the Yankees flail at Wakefield's knuckler tomorrow while Wang gives up 8 runs and miraculously lowers his ERA. 7 STRAIGHT LOSSES TO THE SOX HERE WE COME!!!
Interesting the yankees drafted a catcher with there 2nd round pick. With Cervelli, Romine, Monetero I thought we had enough young catching prospects.
Yanks will win tomorrow.
That surprised me to Anon, I guess they considered him the best player on the board? Not sure.
David Renfroe at 107th, he was the HS SS out of Mississippi that the Yanks and Sox were both interested in.
Great. The Red Sox took Renfroe. Once again, it looks like they out drafted us. Stassi was still on the board, but they took John Murphy instead. I really question what Cashman does.
Red sox just stole David Renfore. John Murphy pick is baffling me we have enough young catching prospect.
Also I would of prefered the yankees drafted Brett Jackson with the 1st round pick.
I think it comes down to coaching. Francona is definitely a better manager and his staff actually coaches. The Yanks performance over the last month has really just been talent based, with a line up where everyone got hot at the same time, and self coaching veteran pitchers, who've had the experience to work themselves out of a funk. The Red Sox come into these games coached and prepared to win. The Yanks don't because their coaching staff is largely clueless and this team sorts itself.
To the Obama Anon. What the hell does the president have to do with baseball? Besides that he didn't create this mess, he inherited it after it was eight years in the making. Do you have a magic wand to wave and make the nation's problems disappear overnight?
Although the Rangers have a good record, it’s just difficult to take the Ragers seriously. Are they going to tank again once the summer heats up? Time will tell & I hope that you won’t stop supporting your team!!! Just read about them here:
