News & Notes
- In 18 starts against the Mets in his career Andy Pettitte is 8-4, with a 3.46 ERA. Last year he went 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA in two starts against them.
- Fernando Nieve has pitched in 52 games in his major league career and is 3-4 with a 4.54 ERA. 51 of those 52 appearances came with the Astros in 2006 and 2008. He's pitched two scoreless innings for the Mets this season. In nine games (eight starts) for Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Buffalo this year Nieve was 3-1 with a 4.22 ERA.
- Brian Bruney pitched one inning for Trenton today. He retired the only three batters he faced, one on a pop out to the shortstop, another on a fly out to center, and the third on a ground out. He threw 12 pitches, 8 for strikes. According to Mike Ashmore his fastball hit 94 mph on the gun. Ashmore also has this quote from Bruney about last night's game:
“Unbelievable, I’ve never seen anything like that. I have, but in high school. Couldn’t have happened to a better guy on the mound, either. He’s got a tired act. I think that’s bad, but two years ago, when he lost the game…I don’t know if anybody saw it, I did. He was in Oakland and he was pitching for Anaheim, didn’t get a call, and so he was like complaining. The catcher threw it back and he just kind of did one of these (Bruney half-heartedly holds his arm out) and hit off his glove and bounced behind and the guy from third scored and they won the game. He gets what he deserves, man. I just don’t like watching the guy pitch. I think it’s embarassing.”I guess Bruney isn't a big K-Rod fan. Here's the game Bruney is referring to. Bruney also told Ashmore that he thinks he'll be activated on Tuesday, and had this to say about today's outing:
- According to Pete Abe, Johnny Damon feels fine today. Damon told Tyler Kepner that he may need to lay off the caffeine.“I felt good. I did what I wanted to do, attack hitters and pitched in the zone. I threw all my pitches. I was just looking to just throw and make sure it felt good.”
“I don’t think I want to be out there much longer than that. I think if you throw strikes and attack hitters, 12 (pitches) is a pretty good number. I was happy about that. I think if I’m out there throwing 25 pitches, I’m probably not very sharp. It was important that I did have a relatively low count, that means I was throwing the ball effectively.”
- Abraham also said that Joe Girardi mentioned that he would discuss the problems Joba Chamberlain and Jorge Posada have had getting on the same page when Joba pitches. Apparently they've had these issues since 2007. I think Joba should realize he's still a kid and listen to the veteran.
- You know how every game the Yanks win a player is given a toy WWE championship belt? Well, Jerry "The King" Lawler sent CC Sabathia the real thing. So now, according to CC, the toy belt is "retired" and the Yanks will be using the real thing from now on. Lawler also promised CC that he'd have a belt made with a Yankee logo on it and send it to him.
Stick around and discuss the game

I hope Castillo gets a huge applause when he starts the game off.
He defintely deserves it Emmanuel.
I hope the game is even played today.
The weather report is saying things will get bad around six.
What the frig is wrong with fox hd?!!
No idea, mine is screwed up too.
Is it me or is the sound messed up on Fox? I hate watching games that isn't on the YES network.
haha good applause for castillo
Can any starter on this team not named CC Sabathia throw strikes?
Nice play Andy!
I hate games on Fox.
Joe Buck sounds so bored in the booth.
fox is awful...this stuttering sound is unbearable
Pettitte just can't pitch in this ballpark, it's amazing.
Dave Eiland must be fired. This team can't pitch to save their lives.
I totally agree.
Pettitte's next pitch will be his 50th. What a joke.
Looking like another 4 inning special...if we're lucky.
This is a joke
I've said that to myself all along. Not 1 pitcher on the team has been great so far.
I'm starting to agree with the anonymous poster who keeps saying that Posada shouldn't catch. Every time he catches the pitchers have no rhythm and can't throw strikes.
great play Tex, having work 5-9 SUCKS
great play Tex, having work 5-9 SUCKS
He makes one or two everyday.
He makes five or six that Giambi wouldn't have made, everyday.
A-Rod!
Is Joe Buck stupid?
He said A-Rod "pops one up to left."
That wasn't anything close to a pop up.
Anyway, big HR for A-Rod.
I heard that too Anon, he's becoming worse and worse every year. He really should stick to football.
I'm about to mute my tv and listen to game on the radio. I'd rather hear John Sterling and I will be able to see the score at least and know whats going on.
Seriously, Buck needs to shut up already. It's getting boring. I don't want to sit here and listen to nine innings of him whining about the homers at the stadium. We all know about them, we're used to it, let's move on.
The anon that states that would be me, the asshole.
You didn't see my post about a certain media's (from Yankees.com) response to me about Posada and his terrible catching abilities and how many runs he gives up? Posada calls a terrible game and has no rhythm with any of the pitchers
Here it is again. This is from a Yankees beat writer with the initals of his first name "B" and the initials of the last name "H"
I emailed him showing how terrible Posada's ERA is over his career and especially in the last 6 years. His response was this:
"What are you going to do? They got stuck signing him to a four-year, $52.4 million deal in his late 30s so he wouldn’t leave for the Mets. He’s really a DH but you can’t use him there as long as Matsui ($13M) is still on the team. They know the pitchers don’t particularly like throwing to him, that’s no secret. But the theory is that his switch-hitting offense makes him more valuable than other catchers. Well, it *made* him more valuable. That’s the trouble with paying “true Yankees” based upon their past performance instead of what they’ll actually produce."
Did you notice the part about "its no secret that Yankee pitchers dont like throwing to him".
Nah I did see that from Bryan Hoch. It's becoming more and more obvious. This year more than others too, mainly because we saw Molina for much of last year, plus Cervelli for a few weeks this year. Offensively those two can't been mentioned in the same sentence with him, though.
By the way, you're only an asshole when you make stupid political statements. Talk baseball all you want, complain all you want, just keep the conversation sane.
Is Ace available today? I'm assuming he is going in after Andy hits his limit. Phil pitched a 3 or 4 innings on Wednesday Ace only did an inning or two. We could have really used either one last night.
I just dont understand how Yankees management can keep trotting him out there everyday. Its mind boggling to me.
I just dont understand how Yankees management can keep trotting him out there everyday. Its mind boggling to me.
Nvm I just saw him warming up.
Robert, he's warming up. Pettitte must be hurt. Damn.
Sorry double post.
Wtf? Ace sat back down? Make up your mind Dave!
Why the hell would you get him up in that situation and not bring him in?
Hey guys, here's the game Bruney was talking about in the quote about K-Rod.
Swisher should go learn under Church's tutelage.
This is so pathetic, one run and one hit against Fernando Nieve?????
We need to get the lead soon with the rain coming.
He looks like he can pitch because the Yankees are making him look good.
CANO SUCKS!
One freaking hit. Embarrassing.
Damnit, it's raining...
The Yankees always make pitchers that they have never faced look like Cy Young for the first few innings. Drives me nuts.
With the eventual loss today and Johan going tomorrow that dropped ball will have saved them from losing six straight to the Sox and Mets. WOW THIS TEAM SUCKS!
It really doesn't seem like Pettitte has a 4.35 ERA in the year so far.
How long is Girardi going to let Pettitte kill this game?
Girardi is the worst manager in the game. ANY TIME HE NEEDS TO THINK HE SCREWS UP.
4-1 with Cy Nieve on the mound and the rains coming. Looks like another loss. Sadly anon is right, they've basically lost five in row.
lmao... fielders are struggles....
Yankees - where champions are made (of opposition no-name pitchers)
Awful... make the fucking play Melky. Losing those three to Boston destroyed all the good this team was doing.
Typical swinging for fences mode by the yanks. Cabrera was trying to hit a home run the entire at bat.
Typical Yankees. Getting dominated by a AAA pitcher. The way this team plays is going to kill us if we get to the post season. The only way we score is via the homer.
"its lined to deep right" ... foul behind 1st base. "its deep, way back" ... caught just behind second base. "baseball its completely unpredictable" ... a-rod does exceptionally in these situations hitting .635.
how did sterling even get this job.
It sure did look that way. ... At least Gardner knows better. Hopefully Jeter can pick up a big 2-out RBI here, but I can't say I'm optimistic, he's been horrible lately.
"SWUNG ON!.. grounded to short and flipped to first."
the guy calls a game like he's seeing it for the first time. which would be cute if he were 5 years old.
Hahahahha, did he really say that?
Waldman... "the thing about Aceves is he really knows how to pitch".
such exceptional analysis.
In her defense, she's right. He doesn't know how to pitch or get hitters out better than almost anyone on the staff. In other words, he does more with his stuff than a lot of people would. If Joba understood pitching as much as he does he's win 20 games right now.
"SWUNG ON AND LINED! right to first for the out."
He's an idiot. He's both bad a judging the ball off the bat, and almost always over commits emotionally to a call before the play clearly develops. which is why he calls flyouts wrong all the time.
Jeter and Damon so a total of four pitches and both didn't get the ball out of the infield. Take a few pitches.
........... Check that, Teixeira, Jeter and Damon saw a total of six pitches and each didn't get the ball out of the infield.
The lack of patience from these hitters is disturbing.
Im not saying Aceves doesnt know how to pitch or that its not important, but what does that mean, does he have great location? does he spend his off hours studying batters on video? A good announcer gives us details about what distinguishes the player. If they're really good they've learned some very personal stories about the player that is germane to the point.
That's a good point, Will.
And the Yanks continue to embarrass themselves. I still strongly believe that Kevin Long and Dave Eiland have to be fired. This team has too much talent to be this unprepared this often.
I don't understand why Cano is hitting 5th...
I cant complain about Teixera, he is absolutely amazing. He's calmed his nerves from April so now he consistently seems to delivery in the clutch. His fielding is impeccable. And not only doesn't he make stupid mistakes, he plays fundamentals perfectly. Last night's head down running with two outs was a prime example, most of the other players on the team would have been jogging around the bases. Or his hard slide into second against Texas after he got hit by a pitch to make sure a double play was broken up. He's might own Yankee Stadium the way Reggie Jackson used to by the time the year is over.
ARod has probably had to double down on therapist sessions.
So you're saying they need to be leading the league in scoring by more runs than they currently are?
Although the Rangers with Maddux and Jaramillo do seem to have a dream team with them.
Yes, they should have a lot more runs than they currently do. It's more related to pitchers who suck that they haven't seen who constantly dominate them. They're not prepared to face these pitchers and I blame the coaches.
They're also not a good hitting team with RISP. Currently hitting .257 with RISP and just .236 with RISP and two out.
And the Rays actually lead the league in runs.
Not in runs/game though.
True, but the Yankees offense should still be better than they are. .257 with RISP is unacceptable. And the way Eiland has this staff going they're gonna need 7-8 runs a game to win.
Shoulda just gotten Mazzone back in the day... 07?
At this point I'd even take Guidry.
Pettitte was awful the starting pitchers have been huge let down this year.
5 innings for Pettitte
2.2 Burnett
2.2 Wang
4 Chamberlain
they are killing the bullpen..
Yup.
I kinda wanna see how Gardner would do with more ABs...
Me too, but with Melky playing well it's gonna be tough.
... What will Jeter do this time?
Nice hustle.
FUCK!
Geeez, that's all Damon can do with a 2-0 pitch? I wish this game would just end already, it's giving me a headache.
Melky's unfortunately coming back down to earth... and if he continues like this it'll take too long to let Gardner get a shot again.
VEEEEEERAAAAAASSSSSSSSS!!!!!
I have no problem if they play Gardner most of the time, I just don't think Girardi will based on what Melky's done, especially in clutch situations.
I am sick of our pitchers. Pettitte can not start at the stadium. Veras is a piece of shit.
Why isn't Cano charging that ball?
Lazy lazy defense.
Yeah, I know... that's what I was saying... Girardi gives too much credit... meh....
why has the whole starting rotation collapsed? CC gave 7 solid innings, but other than that the starting rotation has been horrible. These pitchers are much better on paper. Pettitte's aging I can understand, but AJ, Wang, Joba, wtf? AJ shouldnt even need coaching. And Joba should be settling into a healthy long career as a 15 game winner, that shit he tossed yesterday made him look like he was just called up from the minors. Is this a coaching issue? Its odd to have the whole rotate go to pieces.
Cano might not be charging because the grass may be very slick.
Or maybe Posada is killing this pitching staff?
How long has this been going on?
Dave Eiland is a terrible pitching coach.
WTF? Now Gardner slips on what should have been the third out. This team is playing some amazingly bad baseball on every side of the ball.
Anon has a point, this team has not pitched the same since Posada came back.
It amazingly started to fall to pieces within a few games of Posada getting back off the DL. Just coincidence of course!
It amazingly was better when Posada was injured. Just coincidence of course!
It couldn't possibly be that Posada allows 6.77 runs per 9 IP this year. Just coincidence of course!
Like the song, how long has this been going on!
For months I have felt like Posada was the problem. Actually, since about 2005 I have been sick of Posada. He does not call great games and he's very over-rated in my opinion. When he went down and Cervelli and Cash started, this team was completely different. When he comes back, it looks like the same team before he went down. Signing him for 4 more years was a horrible move.
Posada is part of the problem. But Eiland is as well, as well as Girardi. Eiland has a 12-27 career record, he sucks. Posada does not let them challenge hitters, they nibble and nibble til the bases are loaded. Girardi plays favorites, Pettitte should not have started the 1st or 2nd game after his balky back problem, and he does not manage the pen well at all.
whos starting tomorrow? Im afriad.
All good points.
Mr. Overrated, A.J. Burnett.
Against Santana he goes, fuckin' yikes.
at least its a quick turn around with a afternoon game tomorrow at 1. not goin' to be able to stew in this loss as I drink my morning cup o' coffee.
I just read...we sold Todd Linden to Japan...why? why? He was doing well at trip-a.

-----------------------
That was probably Todd Linden decision to play in Japan. He can probably make more money playing in Japan than he can in the minor leagues similar to Rasner.
...I dont think we won a game on fox in the past 3 seasons...for real.
I stopped watching this game a few innings ago, sounds like Pettitte sucked the cock yet again at the stadium. He should have just been let go, Hughes should be in his spot.
Hey Greg, Anon may have a point but look over the last month. That streak was smoke and mirrors because if you look at most of the games the pitching was mediocre then too. There were just a lot of come from behind victories and the line up all got hot at the same time.
Posada's catcher ERA is two runs worse than Cervelli's. He actually has the worst catcher ERA in the league.
Posada allowed another 6 runs today. When will the madness stop.
How can you expect to win consistently when you have the 27th ranked ERA in baseball and only one reliable starter?
The fact is they were pitching much better when Jorge was hurt.
Greg Cohen said...

I agree it is no longer a question. Cervelli is much more prepared and knows the hitter's scouting report. Same with Molina and Cash they all call a much better game than Posada.
posada is shit.
cervelli at least has some life in him, can call a great game and can run faster than a 35 second 100 meter dash
feels like jeter grounds out every at-bat.
eiland sucks.
long needs to get back to work with cano - when he worked with him at the beginning of the year he was hitting the ball well the other way...seems like he's pulling everything now. WHY CAN I SEE THIS BUT KEVIN LONG AND GIRDUMBASS CAN'T?
(we want torre)
I dont know understand why people are always blaming Giardi. Is it his fault the starting pitchers besides Sabathia are pitching horribly. He also doesn't have a reliable 8th inning guy without Bruney and having to use Hughes to piggyback Wang starts. Also the hitting with RISP problem is more on Kevin Long.
>> ..I dont think we won a game on fox in the past 3 seasons...for real. <<
Uh... We won the last one against Philly.
