News & Notes

- A.J. Burnett has made 16 career starts against the Mets and is 2-6, with a 3.83 ERA. The last time he faced the team that drafted him was 2005 when he was with the Marlins, and in four starts that year he went 1-1 with a 3.42 ERA.

- In ten games (seven starts) against the Yankees in his career Johan Santana is 1-4 with a 3.15 ERA. He's pitched in five games and made four starts at the old Yankee Stadium and went 1-3, with 2.05 ERA in those games. Last year he faced them once in interleague play, and in 7.2 innings he allowed 4 runs on 7 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5 and picked up a win.

-
The Yanks are 10 for their last 74 with runners in scoring position, that's a .135 batting average.

- Besides CC Sabathia who went 7+ in Fenway on Thursday, here's how long each of the other four Yankees starters lasted in their most recent starts: A.J. Burnett and Chien-Ming Wang: 2.2 IP, Joba Chamberlain: 4 IP, and Andy Pettitte: 5 IP. That is just not going to cut it.

- If you missed it yesterday, Brian Bruney talked a little s#!& about Mets' closer Francisco Rodriguez, calling him a "tired act" among other things. Here was K-Rod's responses via Peter Abraham:

“He needs to keep his mouth shut and do his job,” Rodriguez said. “If he was a big guy, I’d probably pay attention. If he was somebody big like Mariano, I’d respect that. But if I don’t know who he is, I just don’t listen.”

“Instead of sending a message through the paper, next time when he sees me at Citi Field come up to me and say it to my face. Don’t be sending a message through the media. I don’t even know who that guy is. Somewhere in Double-A? I believe he hasn’t even pitched one full season. He’s always been on the DL. That’s all I know right now.”

K-Rod actually approach Bruney during BP today and it looked like Mets had to hold K-Rod back. Not that he was really gonna do anything, Bruney has three inches and 50 lbs on the guy.

Oh, and a little baseball news about Bruney, he will be activated on Tuesday.

- More opponents have responds to comments made by Yankees, today it was Brad Penny, who responded to Joe Girardi's accusation that he threw at Alex Rodriguez on purpose on Thursday.
“I don’t give two f—-s what Joe Girardi says,” Penny told reporters today in Philadelphia. “I’m coming inside. I don’t care. Anybody can say that. We can say that about the time they hit our guys. I’m just trying to pitch inside. Maybe he should worry about managing and not trying to be the commissioner.

“Why wouldn’t he say that the night before? Don’t wait a day, then say it. He should worry about managing and let the umpire crew do their job.”

Can the Yankees stop talking s*** and just play? I don't remember this happening too much under Joe Torre's Yankees. I guess those teams were too busy making the playoffs every year.

Stick around and discuss the game
as it happens in the comments section

Anyone see Yankees bp? They showed some Mets trying to get in Bruneys face!

Bentton said...

GREG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i know it's been a long time, but i've been workin' my ass off forreal! let me just say that i hope we win today. really, cause it's sadd that my whole family are mets fans and i'm the only yankee fan from both sides of my family. so u know i'm reppin' hard. but yeah, i saw how we went into fenway with a swagger, and our swag got jacked by the sox (bitches). and how we lost yesterday on my channel fox, man, i was pissed! so i'ma pray we get a victory today. cause we need it now

Greg Cohen said...

Hey Bennton, was wondering where you've been.

Ouch that has to be tough with all those Mets fans, at least they've never won anything.

Greg Cohen said...

Anon, what happened during the BP show?

Anonymous said...

K-Rod confronted Bruney in left field each other and they were talking and players from both sides broke it up. No punches or pushes thrown.

Anonymous said...

They just showed it again... KRod went and found Bruney and said 'do you have a problem w me?' and Bruney said No and then they were separated.

Greg Cohen said...

Ahh, I just saw in on the pregame show. K-Rod is such a little bitch. You don't see Joba running across the field to knock out Aubrey Huff when he mocked his fist pump.

Anonymous said...

Peter Abraham said that Rodriguez pushed Bruney before the YES crew started filming. Shouldn't he be suspended for that?

Greg Cohen said...

Yes, I believe so.

Anonymous said...

I thought that pig K-Rod didn't know who Brian Bruney was?

Anyway the good news is Bruney will be activated Tuesday!!

Anonymous said...

I asked Bruney what happened and he smiled. “We talked about our dinner plans,” he said. “That was it.”

from pete abraham blog

Anonymous said...

It would have been great if Bruney knocked him out.

Anonymous said...

UPDATE, 12:33 p.m.: The YES video of the K-Rod/Bruney incident shows no shoving. K-Rod tried to get at Bruney and was walked away by Mike Pelfrey. It looked like one of those “hold me back, hold me back” kind of things. Bruney just stood there.

I never had and never will like Krap eerr Krod. His celebrations at the end of games are over the top. Sure Joba pumps his fist and yells a lot, but he doesn't pump his fist 2 or 3 times, then yell and point up at the sky. Im waiting for the day he has to get in the box for some reason, whether its a 2 inning save or he blew a save and has to go 2, I would just love for him to get drilled in the back.

Anonymous said...

If I ever see Brad Penny on the streets he better watch his back, that homie is gunna get a pennies worth advice from me when my fist goes thru his face.

Greg Cohen said...

Damon now 1 for his last 19 with six strikeouts.

Why he continues to play everyday? I have no idea.

Unknown said...

Al Leiter should be the yankees pitching coach.

Greg Cohen said...

Why not, unlike Eiland he actually knows how to pitch.

Logan. said...

Eiland=Fail.

Greg Cohen said...

Great start for Burnett, he looks great.

Logan. said...

O'Niel for hitting coach.
Leiter for pitching coach.

YES WE CAN!

Greg Cohen said...

lol...

Alright leadoff double by Cano. They have to get this run in.

Greg Cohen said...

You can't waste opportunities against Johan like this. They may not get another runner at third all game.

Logan. said...

Nice rbi squib hit for Cervelli.

Anonymous said...

Explain to me why Posada even plays?

Greg Cohen said...

That's a huge 2-out RBI. HUGE.

Logan. said...

Posada plays bc

1. His Contract.
2. His Contract.
3. He has it in with Girardi.

NICE JETER!!!!

Greg Cohen said...

You can't say enough about two out RBI. Great at-bat for Jeet.

Logan. said...

WTF! That was not intentional. Dude was at a bad angle to make a call like that. Oh well. Nice inning though. I'll take 4 2-out rbi's.

DannyYankee said...

We are spanking Santana! Woooot!

Greg Cohen said...

Damon should be safe, but I'll take the two more runs.

Four runs of Johan? Impressive comeback performance so far from the Yankees bats after yesterday's embarrassment.

Unknown said...

Damon should have been safe. Too close to say he hit his glove on purpose.

Unknown said...

It's the F---- Mets they are playing. They always make mistakes like that.

Logan. said...

Jesus, i have to switch back to YES, These dudes on SNY/PIX are horrible.

Greg Cohen said...

Who always makes mistakes like that? What mistake are you referring to Rob?

DannyYankee, don't know if you've commented here before... Welcome, and thanks for reading.

Anonymous said...

WTF??!!?!??!!?! THROW STRIKES!!!!111!!!!11!!!

Logan. said...

Burnett C'Mon, Settle the hell down here, you were just given 4 runs, dont give any back.

Anonymous said...

ITS CALLED A STRIKE FUCKING THROW ONE YOU WASTE OF FUCKING 85 MILLION

Greg Cohen said...

Just awful. He gets four runs and does everything in his power to give the runs right back.

Anonymous said...

Burnett tries to make a perfect pitch every pitch after getting a lead, then he gives it all back.

DannyYankee said...

Thanks Greg, been an Anon for a while.

Greg Cohen said...

Ahhh, I see.

Logan. said...

If I'm Cervelli, I roll the ball back to AJ and get his attention to say slow it down. Works for me on my Hs team, can work there.

Anonymous said...

Another three ball count. This is so frustrating.

Anonymous said...

Holy shit. Fuck you AJ Burnett.

Greg Cohen said...

He needs a punchout.

Anonymous said...

He gets 4 runs and then immediately walks someone. Ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

Seriously, we need some type of change, someone needs to be fired, send a message that this is bullshit.

Logan. said...

Burnett has turned out to be quite the Bust.

Unknown said...

I was referring to the mets make those little errors of dropping the ball or screwing up....whatever Eiland said to AJ did absolutely nothing.

Greg Cohen said...

Another walk. And starts the next hitter 1-0. Burnett is a mental midget. He sits for 15 minutes and completely forgets how to pitch.

Anonymous said...

we need a 1-2-3 double play.

Greg Cohen said...

I wish Hal would tell Eiland that he's fired.

Unknown said...

That strikeout was huge. Now lets get a inning ending double play

Logan. said...

Cone and Leiter would be the 1st 2 people I interview for that Vacancy Greg, how 'bout you?

Logan. said...

I am convinced that AJ Burnett is bi-polar when it comes to pitching.

One minute he looks like Halladay.
The next he looks like a choke-artist.

Unknown said...

Am I seeing/hearing things or did Al Leiter say throw that same pitch and he did and stuck him out?

Greg Cohen said...

Wow, he got out of it. Unreal. How do you forget and then remember how to pitch again that quickly.

Logan. said...

Rob, that because Leiter knows what to do, hes got the experience and by far the numbers. Eiland is a loser who owns a 12-27 Major League Record.

Anonymous said...

if thats eilands record he shouldnt even be a minor league coach.

Anonymous said...

Arod is a fucking tool.

Anonymous said...

Cervelli is so much better than Posada!

Greg Cohen said...

He really is, he walked Burnett through that inning.

Unknown said...

Dave played for 10 seasons, won 12, lost 27 with an ERA of 5.74.

Logan. said...

A Thrilla From Godzilla!

Greg Cohen said...

Always great to pound Johan the savior.

By the way, Cervelli is the man and should play everyday. Sorry Jorge.

Logan. said...

Brian Bruney talked about "tired acts" well Jorge is one of the "tired acts" on the Yankees.

Anonymous said...

Jo-who?

Logan. said...

Nice rebound after the miserable offensive day yesterday.

Anonymous said...

Johan and his 88 mph fastball would get killed if he pitched in the AL.

Greg Cohen said...

I don't know about "killed", but he wouldn't be putting up numbers anywhere near what he's done in the NL.

Anonymous said...

Arod really sucks

Anonymous said...

Somebody call the WHHHAAAMMMBUUULLANCE I hear my neighboors crying!

Logan. said...

Robinson!!!!!! NICCCCE

Greg Cohen said...

This is extra sweet after yesterday. Keep pouring it on Yanks.

Anonymous said...

Yeaaaaa baby! Lovin' it, just went outside and let out a big YEEAAAHHH and my neighboors closed their windows! F'em! Stooooopid Muts fans!

Logan. said...

Huge inning. AJ needs to really turn it on and give us 7 or 8 so the Pen gets 2 days off going into an off day tomorrow.

Logan. said...

Cervelli > Posada.

Greg Cohen said...

Phillies just scored four in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead on the Sox.

Anonymous said...

Arod is a fucking bum.

Greg Cohen said...

Who cares? They're up 13-0.

Logan. said...

Just got a call from a friend out in Cali, word going around out there is that Eric Chavez of the A's might be retiring, as he needs back surgery.

Greg Cohen said...

Caugh...roids...caugh.

Logan. said...

Arod has been miserable of late, he really needs to get going, whether its 0-0 or 13-0 it's time for him to start the train and get chuggin'

Greg Cohen said...

I agree, he does need to start hitting. I'm just not going to get upset about an out in a 13-0 game. That's all.

Logan. said...

Yea he really fell off the charts after 04 or so.

Anonymous said...

Yea guys, he also fell off because of a slew of injuries,

Hand
Ankle
Arm
Now Back.

Greg Cohen said...

I'm saying his body broke down because he had to stop using the roids.

Anonymous said...

I love wins like this.

Logan. said...

Yeah but Anon when you use steroids or a substance like that it makes you prone to injury. The muscles get big but the tendons and ligaments are weakened. I am not saying he juiced or used but its highly suspicious when you combine all these injuries, its just suspicious.

Greg Cohen said...

Girardi should send Burnett out of the eighth just so he can walk off the mound to a standing ovation.

Logan. said...

wow, i never noticed the shadow of the flags on the field, that must be distracting.

Greg Cohen said...

Girardi is stupid. Why didn't he give Burnett the ovation he earned? Players must love that.

Greg Cohen said...

Phillies now up 11-5 on the Sox.

will said...

This is crazy if the starting pitchers can be this bi-polar just because of the catcher. But when all other explinations have been ruled out the impossible isn't so impossible. Has anyone done start by start analysis of posada vs cervelli. Taking into account the quality of the opponents as well. This just nuts to watch aj get blasted in 2 n 2/3 the other day then pitch 7 shutout innings today.

Greg Cohen said...

Not that I know of Will, but I may do something like that myself. Interesting to look in to. But I will say this, Cervelli walked Burnett through that third inning jam and I don't know if Posada could have done that.

will said...

Gotta say, this is a crime to see hughes as setup man.

Logan. said...

I have been saying all season(I was an Anon for a long time) that this team is better off without Posada. I love Jorge, I think hes a great player, I just dont think hes what we need right now. Too much emphasis(sp?) is put on his switch hitting ability. Last I heard, you have to call a game, my coachs in HS drill us when we call a game like Posada does.

Logan. said...

Hopefully Hughes will work his way into the rotation. But I think that wont be til Wang or Andy go next season.

Anonymous said...

Well I guess I should go mow the lawn more often. It was 4-0 when I started and 15-0 when I finished. Plus, you guys didnt' have to listen to me complain.

Unknown said...

Why is Berroa on the team?

Logan. said...

That was Pena's ball. What is Berroa thinking, why the fuck is he here other then to make bad fielding plays, and get thrown out at the plate?

Logan. said...

Start spreadin' the news, Mets got blown out today, it was all Yankees, all day, New York, New York.

Anonymous said...

This series turned out great. We hammered the mets golden boy pitcher. And Castillo dropping the flyball drove the mutts fans crazy. Sweet series.

Greg Cohen said...

I'm pretty shocked at how bad they beat up Santana.

Anonymous said...

Also Burnett going 7 saved our bullpen. Interesting Cervelli was catching and the pitcher does well.

Look at the ERA with Cervelli/Molina/Cash compared to Posada.

Now with the off day tommorow are worn out bullpen will be well rested.

Logan. said...

Greg, Its definatly a confidence boost for these team after the way they handled Santana.

Bentton said...

M-E-T-S, SUCK, SUCK, SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess the Joe Torre yankees didn't talk. They were all doing steroids.

Greg Cohen said...

Along with the rest of baseball, anon.

JC said...

Why all the Dave Eiland hate? Some of the best pitching coaches had horrible careers in the majors.

Just because you don't have great stuff doesn't mean you don't know how to pitch.

Greg Cohen said...

I just don't think he's a good pitching coach.

Danny said...

He's not and I think the fact that minor league hitters swing at anything, made him look like he was actually developing pitchers, when they took advantage of a larger zone from hitters.

JC said...

What makes him a bad pitching coach? We never get to see him work with the pitchers. We never hear anyone complain about him.

So who's to say he's a bad pitching coach?

Greg Cohen said...

Look at how the team pitches and how long it takes for these pitchers to regain their form.

Chien-Ming Wang is completely lost, and has not been helped at all by Dave Eiland, at least if he has it sure doesn't look like it. The rest of the starters for the most part have been awful.

These guys get into bad habits and it takes months to get out of them. A pitching coaches job is to spot these problems and work with the pitcher to fix them ASAP.

What have you seen over the last two years that makes you think he's a good pitching coach?

Danny said...

Even Guidry had Hughes and Jobba looking like they were set for the next level in 07. Ever since Dave Eiland took over it looks like a regression in development for the two of them.

JC said...

I'm not saying he is a good pitching coach. I just don't know if we can blame him for all the problems.

And Danny... Eiland was the pitching coach in AAA who got Hughes and Kennedy big-leauge ready.
