News & Notes

- Chien-Ming Wang has faced the Nationals once in his career, on 6/18/2006 in Washington. He pitched well, allowed 3 runs on 6 hits in 8.1 innings pitched, but he gave up a walk-off two run homer to Ryan Zimmerman. At the time the bullpen had been overworked so the Yanks were pretty much forced to let Wang go the whole way.

- John Lannan has been the Nationals best pitcher this year. He comes in with a very respectable 3.51 ERA, but the Nats haven't been able to capitalize as you can see by his 3-5 record. The 24-year-old has never faced the Yankees.

- Derek Jeter went for an MRI today and it came back negative. He should be back pretty soon.

- Got this in my inbox about an hour ago:

Foley’s NY Pub & Restaurant (18 W. 33rd St.) today announced that NY Yankee great Paul O’Neill has won the fan vote for 2009 induction into the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame. Balloting was conducted on www.foleysny.com.

O'Neill was a five-time World Series Champion with Cincinnati Reds (1990) and NY Yankees (1996, 1998-2000) who won the AL batting title in 1994. Nicknamed “The Warrior” by George Steinbrenner, he outpaced Nolan Ryan, baseball’s all-time strikeout king, Washington Nationals slugger Adam Dunn, popular former Mets “Super Joe” McEwing, and pitcher Al Leiter. Paul O’Neill will be inducted into the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, along with several other honorees.

“When we created the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame last year, a number of fans expressed disappointment in not being able to participate in the selection process,” said Shaun Clancy, owner of Foley’s, which features one of the country’s most extensive public displays of baseball memorabilia outside of Cooperstown. “Since one of the deciding factors for induction is player popularity, it was only right to give the fans a voice… and Paul O’Neill was the winner.” ...
Congrats Paulie!

- In much more disturbing news, former Yankee Mel Hall is going to jail for 45 years for raping a 12-year-old girl he coached in basketball. More ugly details can be found here.

Stick around and discuss the game

Time to see if Chien-Ming Wang is going to sink or swim! I'm hoping for swim. If we can get the old Chien-Ming Wang that would be really good for the rotation. Thank god we have Phil Hughes as a back up.

Greg Cohen said...

So far so good.

Anonymous said...

Great throw Posada.

Unknown said...

Berroa should be a ball boy

Greg Cohen said...

lol he really is useless.

What do you guys think of Wang so far?

Greg Cohen said...

That was tatooed, at least it was a solo shot.

Anonymous said...

Besides the homer Wang has look pretty good.

Unknown said...

Agree besides that mistake he's been good. But I'm still not convinced because he is facing the nationals. A win will boost his confidence by miles but he still has to keep this up on his next start....can the yankees get a least one hit please?

Anonymous said...

What a bonehead move by Melky diving for the ball. It was funny to see it wasn't even close.

Greg Cohen said...

Very true.

Anonymous said...

LOL When it was hit it looked like Damon might of even had a better chance. Melky you dont have Gardner's speed. Just keep the ball from getting to the wall.

Liam Gallagher said...

Lets see Hughes have another good inning.

Greg Cohen said...

Yup... I can't believe how bad Lannan is dominating them tonight.

Liam Gallagher said...

The Nationals need a good game.
Nice play by Tex!!

Greg Cohen said...

The nightly Mark Teixeira web gem, and that was a real good one.

Liam Gallagher said...

I hear that the Yanks are doing something on the 30th on the Gate 2 thing. Any way i'm going to that because I got Tickets.

Greg Cohen said...

There is a meet set for that date outside the stadium. It's being organized by the people behind the project. Is that what you're talking about, Liam?

crossfire said...

Can we bring Cody Ransom back up and put ARod back on the bench? lol

Anonymous said...

I can't believe the Nats have scored 6 runs against us in 2 games. They have a .260 winning percantage.

Simply ridiculous.

Greg Cohen said...

Of course it comes down to A-Rod.

Greg Cohen said...

A-Rod is 2-for-5 with a homer and an RBI against MacDougal.

Anonymous said...

just don't hit into a double play....lol..please...

Jim said...

whew...nice SB...

Anonymous said...

2 SB...speed baby...speed!!!

Greg Cohen said...

Nice base running by Gardner. He's such a weapon. Come on A-Rod, just get the run home.

Greg Cohen said...

Wow.

Unknown said...

WHY DIDN'T THEY SEND A-ROD?!!!!!!!

Mario said...

that was a &ucking disgrace...pathetic, AROD & Cano, can't get the bleeping ball out of the infield, lose to 1 of the worst teams in baseball at home no less, with boston, cruising...Wang sucks ass, send him to tampa,

Unknown said...

Seriously, what the hell was Girardi thinking? Send A-Rod! Bard has a terrible arm. If they throw down, Gardner scores from third and it's a tie game. If they don't throw down (which is what I suspect would have happened), then the game-winning run moves into scoring position with one out. This was a NO-BRAINER. Girardi single-handedly lost that game. No excuse.

Greg Cohen said...

No idea. I was sitting here yelling at my TV set.

Anonymous said...

What a shitty team. That can't even score 1 run vs. the worst team in the league with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs.

And, the great Posada allowed 6 runs in 2 games vs. the Nats. Taht sucks. This is the worst team in baseball and they have a .260 winning percantage. Allowing 6 runs is inexcusable. Wang and/or CC should have at most allowed only 1 run each, maybe 2. But, 3 is unacceptable.

But, keep starting Posada, Girardi and Cashman you guys sure are smart.

a7tex said...

wtf r u talking about how did posada fail behind the plate I think he did good. the offense failed the past games

crossfire said...

That was pitiful.

crossfire said...

I can see taking Posada to task when he plays poorly but blaming him for these loses just shows ignorance.

rob said...

ok outing for wang. certinly better that what has happened in the past. still dont understand why arod didnt take second. he had ample time to do it. bottom line is they should've won this. no excuses. bullpen was great though.

JB10 said...

way to fall asleep girardi. Why was arod still on first base?

Mario said...

for anyone to be happy that we lead the majors in COME BACK WINS, your a *ucking idiot, that means we're behind alot.... like tonight, couldn't come back vs a terrible bleeping team, i'm embarrassed

Greg Cohen said...

Yea, this one is on the offense. Lannan did pitch a great game. He threw nothing but strikes and lived on the corners. You gotta give him a little credit.

I still have no idea why Girardi didn't send A-Rod.

Anonymous said...

I didn't blame it on Posada.

But, he still stinks. With CC and Wang going, Posada allows 6 ER's. That sucks. The Nats blow and that's without CC and Wang pitching.

If fuckign Posada is so good then why doens't he throw SO's vs. the worst team in the league? You're telling me that Joe Shmoe coulnd't have done taht? Posada sucks and yet the idiot Yankees are 1-1 vs. the worst team in the league. Brilliant FO and managing.

And, any team taht can't score a run with a man on third and less than 2 outs in the last inning vs. the worst team in the league while playing at home SUCKS. Great team you built Cashman. You're completely clueless. But, then again, that's hwy yyou signed a 80 year old catcher to a 4 year deal, ARod to 10 year deal and on and on and on. Yankees = CHOKE ARTISTS but it ALL starts at the top.

There is simply no excuse for this loss or giving up 6 runs vs the Nats with TWO aces going or not scoring from the 3rd with less than 2 outs.

Anonymous said...

Cashman = CLUELESS

Boy I can't wait for Marte to come back eh Cash?

a7tex said...

if youre not blaming posada, then why are u mentioning him cuz all you do is blame him. Now im gonna quote you..........
"If fuckign Posada is so good then why doens't he throw SO's vs. the worst team in the league?"
last time i checked catchers cant strike people out!! so yes blame it on him real smart

Mario said...

Girardi has no creative bone in his old wrinkled body... nice lineup numbnuts...time to juggle the lineup to jump start some of the losers we have in the lineup, how about calling up Shelley Duncan,

crossfire said...

Anonymous said...

If fuckign Posada is so good then why doens't he throw SO's vs. the worst team in the league?

Sorry, I didn't realize that you didn't know Posada was a catcher, not a pitcher. You see, the pitchers throw the ball and the catchers catch it.

An easy misunderstanding.

a7tex said...

lol crossfire, nice teaching baseball 101

Greg Cohen said...

Was A-Rod about to cry during the postgame?

Anonymous said...

Probably the fans hate him.

capone said...

Un-fucking-believable. Is it me or is anyone else a little worried about this upcoming road trip??

crossfire said...

a7tex, I didn't even see your post. Didn't mean to steal your line. I guess we were both thinking the same thing.

Seriously, that has to be one of the dumbest arguments I have ever heard. LOL

Please, please, please tell me he's actually a mets or red sox fan. lol

Greg Cohen said...

He really looks like it's bothering him.

I know there is no comparison as far as rings and playoff performance is concerned, but look at how Red Sox fans cheered Ortiz through his slump? Would it be so wrong for the Yankees fans to do the same?

Anonymous said...

Ortiz isn't a proven steroid user... yet.

Anonymous said...

Plus, the Red Sox don't even need Ortiz to be good so it's easy to cheer when he's slumping.

Greg Cohen said...

Steroids have nothing to do with it... Well, at least they shouldn't. They never did when it came to Giambi and Pettitte.

Anonymous said...

"Sorry, I didn't realize that you didn't know Posada was a catcher, not a pitcher. You see, the pitchers throw the ball and the catchers catch it."

Wow, that is brilliant and so refreshing to know. Ever heard of a play on words? Or, is this too difficult for you because you have no FACTS to answer with? And,if the catcher does nothing but "catch", then ANYONE could catch because it is NOT important. Some of you people are not very friggin smart.

BTW, Posdada cock suckers, who threw a SO vs. a good team with Burnett pitching the other day, while the Great Posada caught 2 aces vs. the worst team in the league and allowed 6 runs with a 1-1 record?

How about more facts, shall we? What is the longest winning streak we have had with the Great Posada as our catcher over the last few years? How about with Cervelli or Molina? Tick.....tock......tick.....tock....tick....

crossfire said...

I worry about every game Capone but the Yanks do well against these teams.

Florida and Atlanta suck and well... the mets are the mets.

But tonight certainly didn't give me good feelings about the way they are playing. If ARod doesn't get out of the funk soon, I say drop his ass down in the order.

Cano didn't get it done tonight but I know I felt a heck of a lot better when he was at the plate than I did when ARod was.

I hope ARod gets out of this funk soon. His season so far has reminded me a bit of how Tex started the year too. A lot of walks, big homers and nothing else.

I'd love to see how this team plays when it is really firing on all cylinders.

Anonymous said...

Cano is not a good clutch hitter. Even last night his double should of been caught but it was a terrible play by Dukes.

Anonymous said...

And, what was the answer to the question?

Why can't Posada, if he is so GREAT, "catch" or call a SO vs. the WORST team in baseball with 2 aces going, but Cervelli can vs. a GOOD team with Burnett going?

Greg Cohen said...

Stop trying to put this one on Posada, you're making yourself look like a fool.

a7tex said...

i personally HATE it when fans boo their own player, but the reason they boo arod over say, wang is b/c of the money he makes ortiz, doesnt even make half of what he makes. But still i believe he shudnt be booed it only leads to worse things, instead of showing support

Anonymous said...

Well, we're waiting.....................................oh that's right its becasue Posada is such a great "catcher".

Greg Cohen said...

So then shouldn't they boo Hank Stienbrenner? He's the one who decided to give him that money?

Booing clearly isn't helping matters.

a7tex said...

anon, WHEN WAS WANG EVER A SO PITCHER?!! You have abaolutley no argument here, you sound like a dumbass

Anonymous said...

No you guys look like fools. I NEVER put it on Posada. That NEVER came out of my mouth. You resort to straw man arguments because you have NOTHIGN else.

Anonymous said...

S0 = SHUT OUT LIKE CERVELLI DID. NOT FUCKIGN STRIKE OUT MORON. LEARN FUCKIN BASEBALL INSTEAD OF SEMANTICS IDIOT. YOUR FUCKIGN IDIOT CATCHER GAVE UP SIX RUNS VS THE WORST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE WITH OUR TWO ACES GOING AND WE ARE 1-1.

AGAIN WHAT IS THE ANSWER TO THE FUCKIGN QUESTION YOU FUCKING IDIOT

a7tex said...

well, yes they should boo steinbrenner but many times fans dont look behind anything but whats on the field.

Greg Cohen said...

Calm down...

Anonymous said...

Exactly, you have no answer. Complete fools.

We get a SHUTOUT victory vs. a BETTER team with Cervelli and 5.00 ERA Burnett then we do 2 ACES going for us vs. the worst team in the league with the GREAT POSADA going.

Wow, you guys are so smart. Thanks for teaching me baseball 101. Do you need for me to tell what GIDP stands for next? It is something Jeter has done alot of the last few years and what Cano did to lose the game and it is somethign Posada and Arod does all the time too. Think real hard now....

Greg Cohen said...

The most important thing is winning tomorrow. They lost tonight because Lannan pitched the game of his life.

a7tex said...

wow ure making yourself sound even stupider SO=strike out,
SHO= shutout.

crossfire said...

What kills me is that I wasn't even here while that moron thought that I was hanging on his every word waiting to answer him. LOL

I don't need to answer idiot questions from morons who whine like bitches constantly. LOL

Do me a favor... make me laugh and whine some more bitch. lol

SteveB said...

But you know what, the Yankees make all these pitchers look like superheroes. I just got done ranting in POTY about Girardi freezing in the 9th inning. Can anyone tell me why A-Rod wasn't running, or why Girardi didn't put in Berroa to pinch run? Am I missing something here?

crossfire said...

a7tex said...

S0 = SHUT OUT

Seriously, I love when a moron attempts to sound smart and makes himself look like a bigger jackass.

a7tex, you killed him tonight. Anon is rolling around on the canvas... completely dazed... like Tyson looking for his mouthpiece. LOL

Please Anon... come back and whine some more... please!!!!!

crossfire said...

Well, we're waiting..............

Anonymous said...

Posada called a good game with Wang today. They really mixed his pitches well. Today is not the day to kill Posada's game calling.

Greg Cohen said...

Am I the only one not that pissed about tonight? Don't get me wrong, they should have won and it bothers me that they didn't, but I'm just not as angry as everyone else seems to be. Maybe it's because I expected Lannan to pitch well tonight and didn't expect much from Wang.

a7tex said...

that doesnt sound like the same anon,if it is i think we gave him some knowledge

a7tex said...

greg, im not really pissed they lost even though it was against a minor league team. we just couldve had it. Just one of those days when we didnt have it. All posada's fault i guess lol.

crossfire said...

Lannan pitch well Greg. This game wasn't on the Yankees pitchers or Posada. The team was just flat at the plate. Good pitching does that.

I'm always pissed when they lose but I do realize that the Nats have a decent hitting team and they got a great pitching performance.

But losing to the Nats is bad. Good teams need to beat bad teams. And the Yanks better because they haven't been playing the good teams good.

The Wang situation pisses me off more than anything else because they rushed him up too soon. He is a damn good pitcher that needs to get his mechanics straightened out.

Dumb move and Cashman should take the hit for that one.

crossfire said...

I agree a7tex, that was a different anon. I can tell because he was rational. LOL

Anonymous said...

The problem with the team that there stars have trouble manufacturing a run. A-Rod, Cano etc, Gardner stole 2nd and 3rd and they could not get him in. Embarrasing, Gardy should of just tried to steal home.

The younger players like Cervelli, Gardner & Pena do a better job of manufacturing runs.

Anonymous said...

Gardner has a higher OBP than Melky. Gardner see's a lot of pitches and can be a weapon on basepads. Even a pitch out couldn't get him. He is a perfect number 9 hitter. They should be playing him a little more.

Greg Cohen said...

I agree about Gardner.

Anonymous said...

From earlier... It has a lot to do with steroids whether it should or not. A-Rod went on a show and lied to America saying he never did anything because he thought he would never be caught. When the news came out he completely embarrassed this organization and I think unless he plays well the fans are going to make him pay for it. I have no idea why the fans supported Giambi because I certainly never did, but I can understand why they support Pettite because he helped this team win championships and has always been a professional. A-Rod on the other hand? Phony. He stole 300 million from this organization when he signed that contract and now we're stuck with him. So I'll say it again, if he plays well the fans will support him but if he doesn't he's going to hear it worse than anyone. Like it or not that's the way New York is. Too bad he never got to go to Boston like he preferred.

Greg Cohen said...

If it was the roids why did people boo him last year, and in 2006? People just hate this guy.

a7tex said...

not only the money but the attitude. Also, the steroid denial on 60 miniutes didnt matter b/c they booed him starting in '06. Giambi they never booed b/c he was never an "all me" attitude like arod has

Greg Cohen said...

You're right, money, attitude, it's all part of it. I know that, but it's just not helping. Whether we like it or not he's going to be a Yankee for a long time. Booing him looks like it's starting to hurt him. He really looked like he was about to cry in the postgame.

If A-Rod struggles it's only going to hurt the Yankees, so booing him makes no sense.

a7tex said...

see cheering though can go two ways:
1) your doing awesome keep it up
2) Were here to support you just try and succeed.
Now im sure a-rod knows which one is which so i think they should cheer him, b/c the whole point of being a fan is to SUPPORT YOUR TEAM/ PLAYERS.

crossfire said...

As far as I'm concerned ARod is a Yankee so I will root for him. I don't boo my own players although I do curse their asses out when they screw up.

He'll never be my favorite player on the team but since he will be on the team for years to come, I hope he does well.

And he sure has sucked wind lately.

Anonymous said...

They have always booed him because he says the wrong things, makes a ton of money, and has failed in the clutch every year as a Yankee. But my point is now that the steroids issue has come up it's only going to get worse for this guy which I didn't think was even possible. Before it was attitude, money, and performance, now it's all of that with steroids on top of it. Even though they booed him, the fans still thought they had a guy they could follow as he chased the homerun record and won MVP's each year. Now what do they have? An aging, overpaid, third basemen who has a tarnished career and a bad hip.

Anonymous said...

And by the way I refer to the fans as "they" because I myself have never booed the man, I don't believe in it. If a player is a Yankee I will support him, I'm just trying to shed light on what people may be feeling when they boo him.

Greg Cohen said...

Anon, I get all that. What I'm saying is what's the point? Right now it's only hurting the Yankees. Seriouly you have to see how upset he looked. The booing is only hurting the situation.

Anonymous said...

No I saw it, and I agree with you that it's not good for the team. I just understand where people are coming from whether I support it or not. Is A-Rod my favorite Yankee? Not even close. But in order to win they need this guy to feel wanted but I'm not so sure that's ever going to happen.

JC said...

A-Rod should've been told to steal in the 9th. If they throw to second, Gardner could've made a dash for home and tied the game. If they don't throw, the DP is no longer possible.

Stupid decision to keep A-Rod on first.

Anonymous said...

@ JC

I think you are right I dont think they would of even bothered throwing to 2nd with Gardy on 3rd.

Anonymous said...

The booing of A-Rod is getting over the top. He has 2 walk off hits. He came back from surgeory. The yankees fans are out of line booing him this much.

JC said...

I agree.

Booing A-Rod is ridiculously stupid.

Anonymous said...

It's hurting now? When has booing players ever helped?

All the same idiots who boo Alex are the same people smiling and shaking his hand yesterday. Crowd mentality at its worse.

Alex wasn't ready to cry after tonights game. He always has teary looking eyes after a game from eye drops.

Greg Cohen said...

Anon, there are many players who can handle booing, so not that it helped them but they were able to deal with it. I don't think A-Rod can deal with it anymore.

And did you hear he voice? See the look on his face?
