A vintage Mariano interview: humble, honest and insightful.

To me, the only real shame of the Steroid Era is that a guy like Mo even has to answer the questions.

Good luck tonight all.

Anonymous said...

Mo really is the best.

Anonymous said...

to me theres noone more classy than mariano rivera.

JC said...

Part of me likes Citi Field more than our joke of a new park.

JC said...

Oh my God... I hate Jon and Joe for ESPN.

I might need to take an ice pick to my ear drums before the night is through.

JC said...

Steve Phillips, too?!

How is this guy a baseball analyst? He was a freakin' GM! And a shitty one, too.

Greg Cohen said...

I dunno, JC, it's too massive in center and in the gaps.

They're both nice places to see a game, but only one team is replaced YANKEE STADIUM.

Greg Cohen said...

Oh, and yea, I can't stand listening to these fools.

Anonymous said...

go yankees!

JC said...

Yeah, I think Citi is a little too big in the gaps. And I don't like that higher wall in left.

I think Yankee Stadium just disgusts me because they did so many things wrong with it. Pricing, right field seems to be closer, not letting people in that Legends section during BP, etc.

Nice start for us. 3-0. Daniel Murphy is having a rough series, lol.

daneptizl said...

Morgan is terrible. He says it's the hitters who are the reason Livan's hitting with RISP is so low and then in the next sentence says that most hitter hit better with RISP...

daneptizl said...

IDK the point in sending Cano considering how he's slower than CC.

Greg Cohen said...

Believe me JC I share your pain regarding NYS.

Greg Cohen said...

Come on Wang..

JC said...

Uh oh... Doesn't look like Wang has it early on. Pitches are up and he's lacking control.

JC said...

I'm glad Martinez made that nice catch on Wang. I don't want him on the bases!

Greg Cohen said...

lol agreed.

JC said...

Nice DP!

Anonymous said...

Heckuva turn by Cano. Really nice play, so effortless.

JC said...

Why does Cano ground out to second SO DAMN MUCH?!

He tries to pull outside pitches all the time anymore.

Greg Cohen said...

He really should only try to hit the ball the other way, he'll pull some, but it's when he's trying to pull the ball that he hurts himself.

Greg Cohen said...

Wang's gotta start throwing strikes consistently. He's flirting with disaster with all these walks.

JC said...

I think the only reason Wang hasn't given up a run yet is because he's facing the Mets offense.

His control is out of whack, for sure. Hopefully he'll be able to put together a decent line with the help of the Mets weak offense and maybe build some confidence.

JC said...

Well, there's run #1...

Greg Cohen said...

How do you let Castillo get that run in with Hernandez on deck? Is there a manager on this team?

Anyway, Wang is going to blow this lead, there is no doubt about that. The Yankees have to figure out how to score more runs and score them quickly.

Anonymous said...

Wang is terrible but I blame that run on Girardi. The pitcher is coming up next what the hell is he doing?!

Greg Cohen said...

That ball off Melky's bat is a homer everywhere but Shiti.

JC said...

I can see why they went after Castillo. You pitch around Castillo and Wang might totally lose the strike zone.

I'm not sure I agree with that logic, but I think that might be what Girardi was thinking there.

And that ball by Melky should've been a homer.

JC said...

Any sign of trouble, I want Wang gone.

Greg Cohen said...

If that's what Girardi was thinking he should be managing a team that plays to lose.

Anonymous said...

Peter Abraham brought up a great point about the top of the fifth, check it out,

"UPDATE, 9:40 p.m.: Poor bunt by Wang. But why not have GGBG steal second first then bunt him to third? I thought Girardi was Mr. National League?"

Why doesn't Retardi think of these things?

Greg Cohen said...

Yea, I totally agree with Abraham. Girardi seems to lose focus of things, especially in "big" games.

JC said...

OK, let's get some runs here!

Anonymous said...

I second that. /\

Greg Cohen said...

I agree with you two. They really could use a crooked number right here. .. The leadoff walk helps.

JC said...

Two walks!

It really is crazy how often the count goes to 3-2 with Swisher. It's like he replaced Abreu when it comes to that.

He must be one of the leaders in baseball in the pitches per at-bat category.

Greg Cohen said...

I think he leads the league.

The Yanks have to capitalize on this opportunity.

JC said...

Cano has been the DP king of late, with how he's rolling over on everything...

JC said...

Damn it.

Greg Cohen said...

They gotta get Cano out of the fifth hole. He's just pathetic with runners on.

Greg Cohen said...

That might have been the momentum shift the Mets needed.

CollinM said...

Cano is basically 3-3 on the DPs tonight, the force could have been close.

Damn it.

Greg Cohen said...

Does Wang know where his fielders are positioned?

JC said...

A DP for Wang here would be HUGE.

Anonymous said...

Cano is killing us in the 5th hole.

JC said...

Well, this has to be a big step for Wang tonight.

He wasn't totally right, but he took it into the 6th inning.

Step in the right direction.

Greg Cohen said...

Wang did pretty well, especially considering how little he had tonight. I think a better teams puts four or five on the board tonight against him, but that doesn't matter because he faced this team.

JC said...

It'd be reallllllly nice for Wang to finally nail down a win. Let's hope we can hang on.

Anonymous said...

What's the point of starting Wang if he can only go 5 innings and they dont trust him?

Greg Cohen said...

Is it just me or is Girardi managing like this is game 7 of the world series?

Greg Cohen said...

They're trying to get Wang to the point where they do trust him.

Unknown said...

Gerardi have ants in his pants or something? enough changes?

The Yankees trashed a team riddled with injuries, I'd like to give credit to Wang, but basically he didn't fall apart against a team that is really struggling offensively. Not that great a showing in reality. Its been several major league stars now, and he's not dominating. If he had come out and blown them away, I would have been like - ok maybe they know something sacrificing two starts to get him back in shape. But it just looks more and more like the Yankees coaches don't know what their doing.

Unknown said...

corx: s/their/they're

Greg Cohen said...

"But it just looks more and more like the Yankees coaches don't know what their doing."

That's probably it.

Unknown said...

"Retardi" LOL.

JC said...

I agree with everything Girardi just did with the pen.

Unknown said...

on the other hand, i'm glad to finally be reading about rumors of Cashman looking to trade for bullpen help. I was expecting to read those rumors a month ago, at least at long last we're getting some hint that they recognize the issue and want to do something about it other than hope all will be fine on its own.

I do miss Veras however. me sad.

Greg Cohen said...

Coke did not need to come out of the game. Not only is Santos the same hitter against lefties or righties, but righties hit 25 points worse against Coke than lefties. Plus he had to take Swisher out.

Unknown said...

Greg - you ever seen a photo of Wells from that game when he came out wearing Ruth's hat from 1934? I googled around the interwebs today and couldn't find anything.

Greg Cohen said...

Come on Phil, throw strikes.

Unknown said...

Greg - what did you think of citifield. I'm a tough critic, but haven't gotten out there yet, but the seating looks pretty nice, but the Ebbets thing and rotunda seem really dorky in photos. How were the food options?

JC said...

Damn, nice pick by Jeter!

Greg Cohen said...

Nice Jeet!

I'll look for that Will.

JC said...

I love how Teixeira takes control of the infield. After big plays he always says something to the infielders and is always directing people, etc.

I just love the kinda player he is. He seems to be cut from the same mold as players like Tino, O'Neill, etc.

Greg Cohen said...

He's a great ballplayer, I'm so glad they decided to sign him.

JC said...

Me, too. I was so pumped when the Yanks snuck in there and got him. (Although it came out later that they were always in the mix...)

It just made so much sense to get him.

Greg Cohen said...

Will, this is the only pic I could find. It's just a very small picture of his head.

Greg Cohen said...

Speaking of Tex, here's a big spot for him.

Mario said...

Listening to Jon Miller is like nails down a chalkboard, he's so annoying. Besides no matter what he says , he's anti yankees... I don't like Joe Morgan either but at least he knows what he's talking about..

Greg Cohen said...

A-Rod needs to put one in the seats and put this game, and series to bed.

Unknown said...

that is a small pick :)
Wells was like a kid, must have been a thrill to him to walk out on the field as a yankee, put on ruths real cap, and start throwing. im surprised photos of that moment are so rare.

Mario said...

what about the rumors the Phillies are scouting WANG, I'd give him up depending on what Philly could offer, & put Hughes back into the rotation...I really think he's being wasted in the bullpen...

JC said...

Now I don't get that... Why pinch-hit Matsui against a lefty? Does Matsui have decent numbers against him or something?

I know Matsui hits lefties well, but that just goes against the book so much...

Greg Cohen said...

He only wore it for one inning during a game in '97, that's why it's so hard to find a pic.

Greg Cohen said...

Mario, I haven't heard that. Where'd you hear that about Philly and Wang?

Greg Cohen said...

Matsui was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI against Feliciano.

Unknown said...

as critical as i am of the yankees having wang in the starting rotation right now, i wouldnt trade him. wang _should_ be able to get strong and healthy and return to being a dominant player. trading him now would be like selling stock when its price has already collapsed. now is the time to buy, which would make sense of why the phillies might be interested.

Unknown said...

well i cant see the game, but im glad arod isnt forcing swings and will take a walk in that situation if he's got nothing to hit. especially with 2 out.

JC said...

The Yanks just can't put this freakin' game away...

Unknown said...

of course it doesnt exactly help to have Mr.No-Patience batting behind him. :P

Greg Cohen said...

lol Cano is lucky there were two outs or that was DP number four.

This is a huge inning for Bruney with Wright and Sheffield coming up.

Mario said...

WHEN IS CANO GONNA F&*(ING LEARN. retard, he's killing us, batting behind AROD, they are walking AROD everytime, cause they know cano is so erratic and probably gonna hit into a DP or easy groundout...

Greg Cohen said...

They have to move Cano down in the order.

Anonymous said...

Cano sucks. That would have been his 4th GIDP of the game. That's pathetic. Retardi should have been PHing for Cano. He's killing us. But, according to retardi, Cano is a rbi machine.

JC said...

In Cano's defense, those two balls hit to Castillo were rockets. Both could've been hits.

Bruney needs to throw a freakin' strike!

Greg Cohen said...

Great, a four-pitch walk to start the inning. Oye...

JC said...

Pinch-hit for Cano? Are you fuckin' serious?

Unknown said...

swish would be great behind arod in that spot, would really put the mental hurt on pitchers.

Greg Cohen said...

I agree Will.

JC said...

Holy shit. Bruney is pissing me off.

Anonymous said...

Let Cano hit. Are you friggin serious?

JC said...

Bring in Mariano. Seriously.

Anonymous said...

Bruney's another idiot Yankee reliever. He has no business walking anyone here. Retardi is a bigger moron too.

JC said...

You'd seriously rather see Ransom hit over Cano in that spot? Are you really that dumb?

Greg Cohen said...

These walks are driving me crazy.

Greg Cohen said...

Here comes Mo.

Unknown said...

Girardi sure is fussy tonight.

Anonymous said...

You'd rather have Cano bat with his 9 men LOB. Friggin 9 men. And, everybody, including the Mets, knew what Cano was going to do. God, you are so dumb along with RETARDI.

Unknown said...

so I might be a little out of the loop, but when I watched that espn interview with mo, that was the first time I had heard of Papelbon being interesting in signing with the Yankees at some point. 55,000 yankee fans would collectively all have a seizure at once the first game he gets a save and does that annoying squat and fist pump at the stadium.

Greg Cohen said...

You can't pinch-hit for Cano there, stop with that nonsense already.

JC said...

OK, Anon.. Whatever you say, buddy...

When are you gonna say who you really are, anyway? I think you're someone who posts here regularly, and just does this for fun.

Greg Cohen said...

I posted something about Papelbon's comments earlier in the week. He later clarified his statements saying he wants to remain a Red Sock forever.

...... YEA MO!

Perfect cutter on the inner black.

Unknown said...

AJ should pie Cano in the face for a weak straight leaving 9 on like this. That said, nobody is going to pinch hit for a .300 hitter, get real.

Anonymous said...

Now if they could only give Mariano a few runs.

Unknown said...

"He later clarified his statements saying he wants to remain a Red Sock forever."

oh whew. so ESPN is just retarded.

Greg Cohen said...

Pretty much.

Unknown said...

hmmm.. should have pinch ran ransom for posada and had him steal.

JC said...

But that would've left only Pena on the bench. And that's kinda risky when playing in an NL park.

Greg Cohen said...

Mo vs. K-Rod.... hahahaha awesome.

Unknown said...

r u kidding 3-2

Scott_in_Sacramento said...

Good AB Mo!

JC said...

Mariano gets an RBI!! LOL

Unknown said...

what? oh man, being a yankee fan is embarrassing these days, but the mets really take the cake.

Greg Cohen said...

MO!

Great walk, Yanks take lead 4-2... As John Sterling would say, "Isn't that amazing?"

JC said...

Could be a good night for Mo...

Save #500 and an RBI!

JC said...

Could be a good night for Mo...

Save #500 and an RBI!

Rich said...

YEAH MO!

JC said...

Is it just me or is A-Rod much more animated and team-friendly this season? He's always jumping around and laughing! I really like seeing it.

Mario said...

i love how ESPN didn't show a replay of that NON SWING by tex, bullshit, that ump is blind..

Greg Cohen said...

He is JC.... I think the team standing behind him like they did with the steroid stuff helped the way he feels about these guys.

Anonymous said...

Wow, that was hilarious! Krod gets the goat of the game instead of Cano. LOL!

Did Tex go around? I missed it.

Rich said...

was that a typical met inning?

Greg Cohen said...

They didn't show the replay on ESPN so nobody knows. Didn't look like it live.

Scott_in_Sacramento said...

I think A-Rod has finally realized that he is a piece of the puzzle and not the main guy. He looks far more relaxed this season.

Love watching him celebrate Mo's walk.

Anonymous said...

Arod probably has the monkey off his back now. He finally admitted everything and got it off his chest.

JC said...

Yeah, it just seems like he's out there having a lot of fun. It's good for A-Rod and the team.

And you're right. They should've shown that Tex check-swing.

Anonymous said...

Ok, dont PH for Cano then. Let him leave 9 men LOB because of some idealogy you have to poor hitters with RISP.

JC said...

>> Love watching him celebrate Mo's walk. <<

LOL! Me, too. He started jumping around like a little kid.

Scott_in_Sacramento said...

500!

JC said...

What a lousy night to not have a YES post-game show. The night Mo gets an RBI and save #500.

JC said...

LOL! Mo's interview right afterward was GREAT!

Greg Cohen said...

Mo is great, such a class act.

Rich said...

when A-rod just goes for base hits and right center hits he is ON. i was was watching him in spring training one year practicing off a tee with his left hand only, hitting balls to right center, first at bat, home run to right center. idk but he just needs to not try and crush it everytime which is what hes doing

Greg Cohen said...

Yep, Rich, that's the key for A-Rod.

Capone said...

Congrats to Mo. Best Ever

JC said...

Mariano realy is all class. That's what I love most about him. No stupid antics, no blaming people... Just total class.

He could teach K-Rod and Papelbum a few things.

Rich said...

Exactly JC just play your game and go home, theres no need for orgasm's and all that

JC said...

>> theres no need for orgasm's <<

LOL!

Rich said...

On the field that is i don't care what they do off it, LOL

JC said...

Wang's groundout-to-flyout ratio was 11/2. That's pretty damn good.

Rich said...

perfect, imagine a consistent Wang, and then Bruney back and a solid Phil in the bullpen, pretty sick rotation and bullpen i must say

JC said...

If we can get Wang and Bruney to who they can be, we'll have a pretty solid team.

The problem has been that this team hasn't all been healthy/hot at the same time.

Once everything starts to click, we'll be good.

Rich said...

yeah it will happen hopefully
