Winning pitcher
- Josh Beckett (7-2)
Losing pitcher - A.J. Burnett (4-3)

One word to describe A.J. Burnett tonight?

Pathetic.

He had nothing. In 2.2 innings he allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits, walked five, and struck out one. One of the hits was a homer to the slumping David Ortiz. A 400-plus foot bomb to center. He threw 84 pitches, and only 40 found the strike zone, and he now has a 12.91 ERA against the Red Sox as a Yankee.

It was exactly what the Yankees didn't need heading into Fenway after losing the first five games between the two rivals. Now you can make that six. After the game Joe Girardi took blame, saying he shouldn't have had Burnett pitch on seven days rest. I respect Girardi for that, but sorry, I blame Burnett.

Four of the runs came in the second, Mike Lowell walked, and Ortiz followed his homer to give Boston a 2-0 lead. Then after striking out Jason Varitek and walking Mark Kotsay, Burnett almost got out of it. Nick Green hit a grounder to third, a ball that could have been an inning-ending doubleplay, but Alex Rodriguez couldn't get a grip of the ball and it turned out as an E-5. Two batters later J.D. Drew lined a two-run double off the monster to make it 4-0 Sox. Robinson Cano also failed to make a play he probably shouldn't have made which led to a run. But that's what happens when you put the defense to sleep by throwing 84 pitches in 2.2 innings.

The way Josh Beckett threw the ball tonight that was more than enough run support. He was pretty much unhittable, allowed just a hit and two walks in six innings. He also struck out eight, and 59 of his 93 pitches were strikes. His only blemishes; two walks to Mark Teixeira and a Robinson Cano infield single. Maybe A.J. picked a good time for a terrible game, because I don't think anyone was beating Beckett tonight.

The Yankees couldn't get anything going agianst the Sox pen either. Manny Delcarmen, Ramon Ramirez, and Daniel Bard combined for three scoreless innings.

Brett Tomko relieved Burnett in the third and pitched a solid 2.1 innings. He allowed a run on two hits and two walks. Jose Veras pitched then came on for two innings, and made one mistake, a solo homer off the bat of Nick Green. Even though his line wasn't terrible, the guy once again had no idea where the strike zone was. Of his 29 pitches only 13 were strikes. David Robertson pitched one scoreless inning, allowing one hit and struck out two.

The last time the Red Sox opened a season 6-0 against the Yankees came in 1912, when the Yankees were still the Highlanders. Tomorrow's start for Chien-Ming Wang just got a lot more important. Not only is it important for Wang, who is trying to prove he deserves to stay in the rotation, but for the Yankees as well, who desperately need a win against the Sox. Joe Girardi said prior to tonight's embarrassment that Wang was good for 85-90 pitches tomorrow. Hopefully that gets him into the sixth and then the Yanks can go to a rested Alfredo Aceves or Phil Hughes. I can't say I'm too confident that Wang will pitch a good game, but let's all hope he proves me wrong.

Yankees can beat Wakefield and Penny. They just need to take 2 out of 3.

As far as Burnett goes he was terrible. But I do believe he will get on a second half roll like he did last season and be unhittable.

I'm not worried about hitting Wakefield, I'm worried about the Red Sox hitting Wang.

I would refrain from even summarizing games this pathetic.

@ Greg

That true about Wang, I do feel that given tonights loss Girardi will have a short leash with Wang. If Wang does struggle I really believe Girardi will be quick to bring in Hughes and Aceves. Also I can see Mariano being ask to get a 4 out save. This may sound crazy for a June game but I really think Girardi will manage the game like a playoff game, given the fact we haven't beat the red sox yet.

I hoped Mr. Chamberlain was watching Beckett carefully. Joba needs to consistenly hit his fastball 93-95 and mix in his other 3 pitches well.

Joba doesn't need to pitch at 97 to be a dominant starter.

It really is amazing we are tied with them for first. We are 0-6 to them that is really like 12 game difference in the standings.

Tomorrow is a new day. We need to just forget it and move on.

I like what both Burnett and Girardi said after the game. Burnett was ashamed of himself and took total blame. Didn't blame it on the extra rest or anything. He owned up like a man.

And I like how Girardi didn't throw Burnett under the bus, either. Burnett knew he was terrible and knows he needs to do better, there was no reason for Girardi to throw him under the bus to motivate him or something. Giardi stuck up for his player.

Hopefully Wang can give us a good start tomorrow.

Hopefully....Prob not though

Almost 4 and a half seasons after the 2004 post season and still Posada has yet to learn one damn thing from Varitek. His lack of preparation time after time for this series continues to get the yankees completely out-classed everytime they play eachother.
I'm not blaming him for Aj's pathetic control all year long but at some point this needs to be addressed, Posada can't call a game or handle any pitchers well.

when the yankees pitchers are throwing strikes, posada calls a decent game. Big Papis homerun was supposed to be low and in and instead was right down the middle. Its hard to blame Posada for calling a bad game.

I agree with that, but I'm not referring to that one pitch or even that one game. It's known around the league. Pitchers don't like him, they never have. He has a terrible arm and never seems to know when runners are gonna move. He's had the responsibility of catching 2 sure fire hall of famers and 1 guy who is debatable, none of which have liked throwing to him.

I tend to agree about Posada.
