The SWB Yankees, once again forced to play a home game on the road due to bad field conditions at PNC Field, defeated Lehigh Valley by a 5-4 score. The win puts their season recored at 49-35. They own a 4 game lead over 2nd place Syracuse.
PITCHING: Jason Johnson got the start for the Yankees. It was his first AAA start since April 26 due to a shoulder injury. Johnson got off to a great start throwing perfect 1st and 2nd innings. Johnson gave up back to back singles to open the 3rd, one to former Yankee Miguel Cairo, but he got out of the jam. In the 4th, a solo home run by Mike Cervenak gave Lehigh Valley a 1-0 lead. The score stood that way until the bottom of the 7th. Johnson threw scoreless 5th, 6th, & 7th innings, allowing a single in each. Johnson left with a 3-1 lead. Johnson's line: 7.0 IP, 1 run, 6 hits, 2 K--0 walks, 90 P---60 S
Anthony Claggett came on in the 8th and blew the save. A leadoff walk, RBI double, and error scored Lehigh Valley's 2nd run. A RBI single tied the game at 3. Claggett started the 9th with 2 singles and was lifted for Kroenke. Claggett pitched poorly, but picked up the win. 1.0 IP, 3 runs, 4 hits, 0 K--1 walk.
Zach Kroenke relieved Claggett with 2 on and nobody out. He gave up a RBI single to right to cut the SWB lead to 5-4. On the play Austin Jackson hit cutoff man Ramiro Pena who then threw out the tying run at the plate with a perfect throw. Kroenke got the save (1). 1.0 IP, 0 runs, 1 hit.
OFFENSE: Kyle Kendrick got the start for Lehigh Valley and stymied the Yanks for 6 plus innings. They had a threat in the 1st inning when Ramiro Pena walked and Austin Jackson singled, but could not score. In the 2nd, Yurendall de Caster doubled , but was stranded. Jackson got a 2-out triple off the wall in the 6th, but once again stranded. The Yankees finally broke thru in the 7th.. Back to back doubles by Francisco Cervelli and Colin Curtis scored 1 run. Yurendal de Caster walked, a wild pitch moved runners up to 2nd & 3rd. Eric Duncan had a RBI sac fly, followed by Kevin Russo with a RBI single to give the Yanks a 3-1 lead. In the 8th with the score tied at 3, Jackson singled, Shelley Duncan walked, Juan Miranda followed with a RBI single. Franciscon Cervelli then got a bunt single to load the bases. Curtis added a RBI sac fly to give SWB a 5-3 lead.
NOTES: Mark Melancon was called up to the Yankees, Jonathan Albaladejo is coming back to SWB. ... Chris Stewart's hamstring injury will keep him off the AAA all star team. ... Shelley Duncan and Austin Jackson were voted to the AAA all star team. Duncan will participate in the AAA home run derby. ... Jesus Montero and Michael Dunn are on the AA all star team, with Jorge Vasquez participating in the AA home run derby. ... Ramiro Pena is taking flyballs in batting practice.
