7/12 Minor League Report

Futures Game Update: Major League Baseball's Futures game is being held today. Two Yankees are playing for the World team, Trenton's Jesus Montero and Charleston left-hand pitcher Manuel Banuelos. (Triple-A) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (50-36) beat Buffalo (32-54) 3-2: Box Score - Recap

The SWB Yanks finished the first half with a 3-2 win over Buffalo (Mets). The win puts their league best record at 50-36.

PITCHING: Sergio Mitre got the start for the Yankees and shutout Buffalo for 8 innings on 6 hits and 82 pitches. He had 5 strikeouts and did not allow a walk. Mitre tossed a scoreless 1st giving up a double. He gave up leadoff singles the next 4 innings, but the sinker baller got 2 double plays, and a lot of ground outs to help him out. Mitre finally had a clean inning in the 6th, picking up his 3rd strikeout. He tossed a perfect 7th with 2 strikeouts. Former Yankee Angel Berroa was one of the victims. He threw his 3rd perfect inning in a row in the 8th getting 3 groundouts. Mitre finished very strong retiring his last 11 batters, picking up the win (3-1). Mitre's line: 8.0 IP, 0 runs, 6 hits, 5 K--0 walks, ERA 2.40, 15 groundouts--4 flyouts, 82 pitches--64 strikes.

Edwar Ramirez came on to pitch the 9th and blew the shutout, giving up 2 runs. He got 2 quick outs then gave up a single, RBI double, RBI single (Berroa) and wild pitch, before finally getting the final out to end the game SWB 3-2. Ramirez got credited with a save (2).

OFFENSE: Ken Takashi got the start for Buffalo. The SWB offensive struggles continued when they stranded the bases loaded in the 1st. Kevin Russo and Ramio Pena singled. Austin Jackson hit into a DP. Shelley Duncan walked with Eric Duncan being HBP, Yurendall de Caster K'd to end the threat. Shelley walked and was stranded at 2nd after a wild pitch in the 3rd. The Yanks finally broke thru in the 5th. Doug Bernier and Ramiro Pena doubled to score the 1st run. Pena scored the 2nd run when Mike Lamb made an error on a ball hit by Duncan. In the 6th, de Caster was hit by a pitch, moved up to 3rd on 2 ground outs, and scored on a RBI single by Doug Bernier to up the SWB lead to 3-0. In the 7th, walks to Austin Jackson, Duncan and de Caster loaded the bases with 1 out. but were stranded.

NOTES: Austin Jackson, Shelley Duncan, and Zach Kroenke will play in the AAA all star game. Duncan will compete in the home run derby. Chris Stewart will miss the game because of an injury. Jesus Montero and Mike Dunn will play in the AA all star game, with Jorge Vasquez will be competing in the AA home run derby.
