LP - Andy Pettitte (8-6)
SV - Andrew Bailey (11)

From the first pitch on this game both starters, the Yankees Andy Pettitte, and A's left-hander Gio Gonzalez, came out dealing. Pettitte retired the first ten men he faced, and Gonzalez held the Yankees hitless through four and two-thirds. They both had their A+ stuff and the game remain scoreless through five and a half.

Then in the bottom of the sixth the Yankees scratched across a run on a one-out walk to Derek Jeter and an RBI triple off the bat of Brett Gardner. The good news was the Yankees now had a 1-0 lead, the bad news was that Gardner stayed at third for the rest of the inning and the Yanks were unable to add to their lead.

Andy Pettitte had been crusing up until this point in the game. He had allowed just two hits, walked none, and struck out seven. He was well on his way to his best game of the year. Then Scott Hairston led off with a double, and Nomar Garciaparra followed with a walk to put two on with nobody out. Pettitte then got Jack Cust to fly out to center. At this point Joe Girardi came out of the mound for a visit but decided to leave Pettitte in the game. It was a decision he would regret. - I'm not second-guessing, I would have left Pettitte in too. Davis then tied with game with an up the middle. Bobby Crosby then reached on a bunt single to load the bases and that was is for Andy.

Alfredo Aceves came out of the pen and had a rare terrible game. Things started out well, on the first pitch he threw he got Mark Ellis to pop out to Mark Teixeira for the first out. Then he was up 0-2 on Landon Powell, before leaving a pitch up in the zone and allowing a two-run single to give the A's a 3-1 lead. He would give up two more hits in the inning including a two-run double to Orlando Cabrera, and by the time the dust settled the A's led 6-1.

Had Aceves done his job we'd be looking at Andy's performance today as a very good one. He pitched very well today, but got into one jam and the pen couldn't bail him out. Like Joba Chamberlain, we're seeing some good things from Pettitte here in the second half.

Give the Yankees offense credit, they didn't give up and at least made a game out of it. Jeter cut the lead to 6-3 with a two-run homer in the 8th. His 11th of season. Two batters later Mark Teixeira hit his 25th of the season, a solo shot that cut the A's lead to two. Later in the inning Nick Swisher doubled, and then with two out and Swisher on third Robinson Cano just missed what would have been a game-tying two-run homer.

Later in the ninth the Yanks got the first two men on base on back-to-back walks by Melky Cabrera and Johnny Damon, but Jorge Posada grounded into a double play, and Jeter flied out to right-center to end the game.

With the Yanks loss during the day and Boston's win tonight, the Yanks lead is down to 1.5 games. They will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon at the stadium and take this four-game series from the A's. Sergio Mitre will make his second start of the season, and he will face Oakland's Dallas Braden.

The only part of the offense where the yanks need to get better is when a runner is on third with less than two outs. Its seems like too many yankee hitters strikeout or make unproductive outs in that situation. Teixeira just had to hit the ball in the air anywhere in the outfield and Gardy would of scored instead he hits a line drive.

I hope tommorows game is a blowout. Yanks need to knock around the A's. I would like to see Melancon get in a game.

Don't know if you have been following the new on Doc over on MLBtraderumors but it says that they'll entertain the idea of trading Joba for Doc. Can the Yanks pull it off and land the best 1-2-3 in the Majors?

As of now the Jays are asking for Hughes and Joba plus two more, so it might now matter. If they lower the price, though, it will make for a very tough decision for Cashman. Like I said a few weeks ago, I'm glad I don't have to make it.

If the Jays wont both they can go jump off the top of the Rogers Center. At most, Joba, Melky, Montero and either Jackson/Marshall/Betances
