News & Notes
- According to the Journal News' Josh Thomson, Joe Girardi said that Chien-Ming Wang will play catch on Monday. The Yanks will then see how he throws before figuring out the next step. Girardi also said that this rehab process would likely take some time, and definitely more than two weeks.
- CC Sabathia has made 27 starts against the Tigers in his career and is 13-10 with a 4.69 ERA. He faced them on April 27th of this year and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits, walked 1 and struck out 7 in an 8 inning complete game loss in Detroit.
- Justin Verlander is 3-1 with a 4.85 ERA in five starts against the Yankees. He was the winning pitcher in the 4/27 game and pitched seven shoutout innings on his way to a win. That night he allowed just 7 hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out 9 Yankees.
He won his only start in Bronx back on 8/16/2007, when he allowed 3 runs on 7 hits in 5.1 innings pitched.
Verlander also leads the AL with 149 strikeouts.
- Since Alex Rodriguez came off the DL the Yankees are 21-9at home.
- The Yankees have won 14 of their last 19 games.
- Detroit put Joel Zumaya on the DL with right shoulder soreness. RHP Ryan Perry has be recalled from Triple A Toledo to take his place.
- Today is the 10-year anniversary of David Cone's perfect game and will throw out today's ceremonial first pitch. CC, you know what you have to do.
Stick around and discuss the game

Apparently, Giradi has already forgot what he said last week about 'rotating' players in the 2nd half - still going with the 'standard' lineup.
Anon, it's two games, have some patience.
and yet again Direct tv & yesnetwork are screwing the fans, WTF , why is the game blacked out, way down here in north carolina, total bullshit...
Well, there goes the perfect game.
By the way, what the hell kind of route was that that Damon took to that ball?
who the hell is the homeplate ump, from the espn gamecast strike/ball chart, he's way the fuck off..
gotta cut down on these walks, its a disease thats affecting the whole team, joba, AJ, & CC, and especially andy
Yup, very true.... Way too many pitches so far. He needs a few quick innings to get that pitch count down.
CC defentiely needs a couple quick innings. Maybe if he does he'll be able to last until the 7th or 8th.
Dave Eiland has this whole rotation throwing nothing but balls. He has no idea how to fix a pitchers mechanics, and as a player had no idea how to approach major league hitters. Maybe he should have stuck with coaching minor leaguers.
Kay's got some nice seats. Surprised he didn't get something behind the plate, though.
Can Retardi play a little small ball? This team hasn't score a run off Verlander all year, how about a bunt to try to manufacture a run?
I completely agree.
This team can't hit with RISP
True Mike, it's one of their major flaws in my opinion. They also don't move runners over and they seem to have stopped sac bunting.
There is no reason why Damon shouldn't have bunted Jeter over last inning.
Well, its a little early for that when you have the middle of the order coming up. Damon is a great hitter in his own right and you don't want to take the bat out of his hands.
Good pitching always beats good hitting, you have to play for individual runs against a guy like Verlander. I like sabermetrics, but its view on bunting is extremely short-sighted.
The Yanks may not have a runner in scoring position for the rest of the day.
A-Rod looks like he's running in quicksand.
Yea, his range is gone. He had a few good days at third during the Yanks last winning streak but overall he's been about as bad as it gets.
At least Boston is losing 6-1.
Great job by CC today.
Yep. Despite walking, what was it, 3 batters? he still pitched very well. Just what we needed from Big Slim.
SEE YA! AN A-BOMB, FROM A-ROD! YANKEES LEAD 1-0!
Welcome to the bandbox Justin!
1-0 Yanks on a Yankee Stadium HR by A-Rod.
That was weird. Just as I pressed publish on the post before A-Rod's homer he hit it.
Big hit for A-Rod, now Ace and Mo have to do their jobs.
A hit here would be huge.... come on Melky!
Not a huge hit, but it still works. 2-0 Yanks!!
We can beat a guy we haven't seen, despite the "sly old dog" Leyland's best efforts.
We can beat Verlander.
We won our first series after the All-Star break.
Now that I have that out of my system, let's hear some complaints.
2 gms back, keep it up boys.
Nice win today.
