WP - Alfredo Aceves (6-1)
LP - Jim Johnson (3-4)
So much for a hitter's friendly ballpark, huh?
For the third straight day the Yankees won by the score of 2-1. Today, it was Andy Pettitte and Orioles' rookie David Hernandez who squared off in the pitchers duel in the Bronx. Both starters allowed just one earned run. Baltimore's came in the top of the first on a solo homer by Nick Markakis.
The Yanks scored their run, also on a solo homer by Eric Hinske. After having just 1 home run in 106 at-bats as a Pirate, Hinske now has 4 in 15 at-bats as a Yankee.
Pettitte pitched very well throughout, matching his longest outing of the season with 7.1 innings of one-run ball. He also struck out a season-high eight batters and walked just two. His ball to strike ratio was excellent, as he was able to find the zone with 76 of his 109 pitches. Considering the way Andy struggled at the end of the first half it was great to see him pitch so well.
Even though he pitched great, he did put two men in scoring position with one out before leaving in the eighth. Phil Coke came out of the pen to replace Pettitte and get the Yanks out of the jam. On the first pitch he threw to Nick Markakis the right fielder hit a sharp grounder to Mark Teixeira at first, who quickly made an off balance throw to Jose Molina to cut off the run at home. Molina caught the ball and made a perfect swipe tag to get Cesar Izturis at the plate. Is it just me or does it seem that Teixeira saves at least one run or error a night with his defense?
Now Adam Jones was up with runners on the corners and two out. On the very next pitch, Coke threw a wild pitch that bounced away from Molina, but Molina got up, dove for the ball and threw to Coke in one motion, Coke caught it and tagged Brian Roberts for the final out of the inning. The great defense the Yankees showed in the eighth won them the game.
Alfredo Aceves replaced Coke with a runner on second and one out in the ninth. He eventually got out of the inning with the score still tied at one. That would be enough for the win for "Ace" because in the bottom of the inning Hideki Matsui blasted a solo homer to give the Yanks a 2-1 win. It was their ninth walk-off of the year, matching their total for the entire 2008 season.
More good news from Texas tonight as the Rangers were able to beat the Red Sox 6-3. That means the Yanks are once agains tied for first place in the AL East. Hopefully by this time tomorrow they'll be in first by themselves.

Great job by Andy a shame he didn't get the win. It also showed if Andy makes his pitches he can pitch in the new stadium. The yanks pitchers cant use it as an excuse anymore.
Andy's problem this year has been his command he's been walking to many hitters and missing his spots. He has always been a second half pitcher I think he will have a good second half.
Also nice hustle by Coke to beat Roberts to homeplate. LOL @ Coke saying he got excited once the ump called Roberts out and spiked the ball.
1. A shame Andy couldn't get the win. He really deserved it tonight.
2. Even thogh the past few games have been very low-scoring, homers are still being hit. Three tonight, three yesterday, etc. But the homers over the past couple of days have been long, legit homers....so I guess it doesn't really matter.
Here's the Good News:
Wang was told by doctors that the pain was normal for a pitcher rehabbing a strained shoulder, so the righthander remained cautiously optimistic about returning to the mound in 2009.
"It's not too bad," Wang said through an interpreter. "If everything goes fine, I should be able to pitch this season."
Great D-fense last night & pitching ! Nice to team loose & having fun, good camaraderie this year. Its a gutsy team
Great game and a lot of fun to be at. The defense was great and because it was such a close game, everyone in the Stadium seemed to be more and more on edge as the game got later.
Best game I have been to at the new Stadium. Low scoring, defensive game with a few blasts.
Plus nothing beats a walk off homer.
I heard on the radio last night that this is the first time in their history that the Yanks have won three consecutive 2-1 games.
The key was definitely defense-another game that Tex makes a play that no one last year makes. I thought the key was even more so the play Cano and Jeter made getting Itzturis to slide into second and not picking up a base coach or the ball Roberts hit. Huge play ( Jeter bent down like he was fielding a grounder and Cano came to second and faked a DP play) Loved it - Go yanks
Now I've been to two games at the new stadium and two walkoffs. Great game.
There's nothing like a walk-off win. I was fortunate enough to be at Melky's walk off against the Twins and Posada's against the Angels. Both fantastic wins, and a hell of a lot of fun to be at.
As for the team, they never give up, and that's really a great quality for a team to have. Last year it seemed every time they fell behind they'd sulk and eventually put up very little fight. Not this year.
i, like everyone else, really enjoyed this game, but i was still frustrated by how few pitches everyone was taking.
we let hernandez and co. get out of like 4 innings with 12 pitches or less....can't do that and win forever
