WP - A.J. Burnett (9-4)
LP - Jason Berken (1-8)
SV - Mariano Rivera (28)
You know, when these Yankees get hot they look like they're unbeatable. Right now things are clicking on all cylinders for Joe Girardi's crew. They're undefeated since the All Star break and the pitching is starting to show why people rated it so highly back in Spring Training. The offense has been lacking of late but they've gotten enough to win.
Today the Yanks broke out of their offensive malaise and staked A. J. Burnett to an early lead. In the bottom of the first the Yanks jumped in front to an early 2-0 lead. Derek Jeter did exactly what leadoff hitters are expected to do and got himself on base and in scoring position right away with a leadoff double. Damon failed to move him over (I know, shocking) with a fly out. Mark Teixeira would follow this up with a single but Jeter failed to score from second. Not to worry though, A-Rod got the run in with a very unclutch single. That wasn't the end of the Yankees scoring that inning though. After Jorge Posada walk and Hideki Matsui out, Cano and Swisher hit back to back bases loaded singles. Brett Gardner would make out and the Yankees would only tack on two more runs in the game, on a Posada home run (3rd inning) and double (8th inning). However, the damage was done and with Burnett pitching, things looked good for the Yankees to remain undefeated in the second half.
The hard throwing righty didn't dissapoint either. He maintained a shutout into the seventh inning while only being threatened once. That was in the third when the meat of the O's order came up and a defensive miscue on Nick Swisher's part turned a lazy fly ball into a leadoff double. Adam Jones then made things scary with a base hit single to put the tying run on deck. A. J. would settle down though. He got Nick Markakis to pop one up into foul territory and struck out Aubrey Huff. Next came the most critical play of the game. Ty Wigginton hit a smash to right field but Nick Swisher made a nice running cach and got the Yankees out of the mess he'd created in the first place. That was pretty much it for threats against A.J. until the seventh when he started to tire. The first batter got things started with a leadoff hit and Adam Jones doubled to put two men in scoring position. Luckily, Burnett would limit the damage by only giving up two runs on a sac fly and a wild pitch.
A lot is going to be made of Brian Bruney giving up back to back homers in 9th with two out but I can't get to worked up over it. Mariano can handle facing one extra batter this year and Bruney's role on the Yankees has been diminished to mop up man. Its not a big deal and I can't complain as a Yankees fan. Joe Girardi has found the right mix in the bullpen, everybody in the rotation is pitching well, and I'm really not worried about the offense at all. Things are looking good right now.

i loved the way tex and arod 1st inning hits were smooth easy swings - no big upper cuts - not trying to jack it out. If these guys start hitting for more avg yanks are really going to be hard to beat--go rangers sweep 'em up
Mike, I agree with what you said about Bruney, there's nothing wrong with him as the mop up man with the way things are going.
The only thing that frustrates me is that he strikes out the first two batters and looks good, then implodes.
Imagine he could regain the form he had earlier in the year? They'd have the best pen in the game.
People need to cut Bruney some slack. He is coming off the dl for the second time this year with arm issues. Look how much A-Rod struggled coming off the DL. I agree with Girardi his stuff today looked really good. Its just he missed his location on the 2 homers and basically threw them right down the middle. Right now you bring in Bruney in low leverage situations and get him right and get the rust off. Once right you can put him in high leverage situations.
Bruney was awesome before going on the dl, he was pitching like the way Hughes is right now and Bruney did a very good job last year. You cant give up on him right now.
2 Things the yanks need to add.
1.) A second lefty in the bullpen. I assume that is going to be Marte. But you need someone who can help out Coke in the pen. You dont want to overwork Coke.
2.) A Starting pitcher. No not an ace like Halladay or Lee. Just someone who can be a 4th or 5th starter. The yanks need to add some starting pitching depth. With Kennedy hurt, Ace and Hughes in the bullpen there is no other options in triple a.
Other then that the team is pretty much set.
Anon, as far as the second lefty goes, keep an eye on Scranton's Zach Kroenke. Currently he's got a 1.08 ERA and has held lefties to a .163 batting average.
I have no idea who they're going to get as far as a starter goes. Lee? Halladay? Harang? Nobody? Your best guess is as good as mine.
I haven't given up on Bruney but he certainly worries me. Health issues on a pitcher always scare the heck out of me.
If Bruney comes back to form, the Yanks would certainly hava killer pen.
Heck, they do now.
RAB made a good argument for Duscherer.
hey guys on sunday i'm taking the gf to the nys (both of our first times and i'm taking metro north down from poughkeepsie. i've never eaten anywhere near the stadium for a real meal, but i'm looking to take her out to dinner after the game before returning back on the metro. anyone have any opinions on the restaurants at the stadium or any recommendations for a sit down place nearby? thanks a lot!
If he's available I'd take Duschereerererere.
Harang is making way too much money. Duscherer is a nice option but isn't he hurt? There really is not much starting pitching options.
Cashman did allude that there is more bullpen arms available than starters at the deadline.
Maybe the yanks trade for a bullpen arm and insert Aceves into the rotation if they need him.
No way, leave Ace in the ben, he's been lights out. I say that they start looking into deals for a starter but only pull the trigger after Mitre has another start. If he gives us another start like he did I think all we need to add is the arm for the pen. We just need a guy who every 5th day can give us 5 innings and keep us close. With our offense and the pen pitching like this we can take a descent start
Where is AJ burnett now? The lead in the AL East is slipping away because the team and pitchers aren't showing up to play
