The 27-year-old right-hander is 2-8, with a 5.36 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, and in 80.2 IP he's allowed 48 ER on 87 H, walked 44 and struck out 52. He's had one good year, back in 2007, but besides that he's been below average he whole career. So if you're wondering why the Yankees would be interested in this guy don't worry, you're not alone, I have no idea either. The second installment of summer book odds on the running of the first Roy Halladay sweepstakes leading to the July 31 trade deadline:
ANGELS 5-2
Infielder Brandon Wood, a pitching prospect like Trevor Reckling or Jordan Walden. Will Halladay go to the coast? Former GM Bill Stoneman was not known for deadline deals but GM Tony Reagins, added Mark Teixeira at the deadline last year.
YANKEES 3-1
Yankees may be a third-place team, according to one scout who saw them in Anahiem. Yankees are looking at Ian Snell (Pirates). They need a starter. Yanks could move Phil Hughes, plus prospects.

giving up Phil Hughes for a guy who couldn't even make it with the Pirates this year makes absolutely no sense. I seriously hope Cashman is better than that.
I think we should avoid all trades with the Pirates. They never pan out.
Cashman's an idiot he will do it.
Saint, the part about Hughes was about Halladay, not Snell. If the Yanks traded Hughes for Snell I'd stop watching baseball.
LOL I dont believe the yanks will give up Hughes for someone with a 5.36 ERA. That anonymous scout is probably a pirates scout. I like that they added Hughes plus a prospect. Pirates would drive Snell to new york for just Hughes.
Also I love how the yanks look like a third place team because they got swept by the Angels. That is stupid the yanks have the best record since A-Rod came back in May. To judge a team based off one series is dumb.
I bet Sergio Mitre pitches better than Ian Snell. A guy with a 5.36 era in nl would be destroyed in the al east. If Mitre pitches well the yanks really dont need a starter because Wang will be coming back.
The only player that interest me in pittsburgh is Zach Duke. He is going to be a great starter. Duke straight up for Austin Jackson I would make that trade.
NOT TRADING JOBA, HUGHES, MONTERO, MCALLISTER & MELANCON They are untouchables to me.
Meh, decent FIP's the past couple years. If all else fails, I guess they could do worse. I doubt this ever ends up happening.
The Hughes thing must have been a typo of course. A Hughes for Snell trade isn't even worth consideration.
Snell?!?!? why...the guy can't cut it in the NL...he would get demolished in the AL East...
They had to bite their lip to offer Hughes to get Santana. There is no way this article or this writer is correct.
Snell's biggest problem is that he's a bit of a head case. I think that the Yanks would provide him right opportunity to clear his head and move forward with his career. He's a former 14 game winner on a team that won only 67 games. He has a career ERA just under 5, but with Yankee Stadium's 270' right field fence I wouldn't expect that to improve much. But what would help him is having an offense to keep him in games. He eats up innings and he strikes batters out. What the guy needs is a change of scenery.
I wouldn't mind getting Snell at all if we had to give up a marginable prospect to get him. He has some potential.
