Any time you can go 9-1 on a homestand, you have to be pretty happy. When you consider the 5 1/2 game swing in the AL East, its even better. The pitching stole the headlines the past ten games but today, the offense bailed out the starter.

It was obvious what type of game it was going to be at the very start. Sergio Mitre ran into immediate trouble and gave up two runs in the first inning on a handful of hits. However, the Yanks bounced right back in the bottom of the inning. Jeter and Damon both got on base to put the Yanks in scoring position. Teixeira and Posada would make easy outs and it looked like Dan Braden and the A's might escape unscathed. The Yanks would finally get some clutch two out hitting though and got their first run of the game on a single from Hideki Matsui. Nick Swisher then walked and Robinson Cano would clear the bases on a big double. Cano got thrown out on the way to third but the damage was done.

Both starters would then settle in for a while to some degree. Mitre got tagged for another run in the fourth but until the sixth that was it for the scoring. In the sixth, Mark Ellis hit a two-run homer off Phil Coke to briefly give Oakland a one-run lead, but the Yankees would have a big inning in their half. Cano wouldn't exactly start things off promisingly with a ground out but Melky walked and a rare Cody Ransom double set up a big hit for the captain. Jeter delivered with a two-run single. He then got picked off but that still wasn't the end of the scoring. Damon hit a double and Teixeira drove him in. At this point the Yanks had a 7-5 lead.

It took some interesting bullpen maneuvers but Joe Girardi got the final nine outs of the game with a combination of Hughes, Rivera, and Bruney. All in all, a very nice homestand for the Yankees. The road trip ahead is going is going to be tough but right now the Yankees are in a pretty good position.

Hughes has got throw less pitches. He threw 39 pitches in 1.1 ip. Mariano today threw 13 pitches in 1.1 ip. Hughes also threw 40 pitches in 2 innings against the tigers. Now Hughes is probably not going to be avaliable tommorow.

Also good to see Bruney pitching better. Hopefully he starts pitching like the Bruney before going on the DL. He has a great power slider he is throwing it around 88 mph. Yankees now got a couple of hard throwing strikeout pitchers like Hughes and Bruney in the backend of the bullpen.

If Bruney can get back to early season form the Yanks could have one of the better pens in the league.

Like you said, he's been throwing better, even in the game he gave up the two homers. That day he was just missing his spots.

Both Teixeira and Jeter should be AL MVP candidates.

Hughes pitch counts recently:

Date/innings/pitches:

Jul 26 / 1.1 / 39
Jul 23 / 2.0 / 28
Jul 22 / 1.0 / 16
Jul 19 / 1.0 / 13
Jul 17 / 2.0 / 40
Jul 12 / 1.1 / 26
Jul 9 / 1.1 / 19
Jul 8 / 1.0 / 13
Jul 4 / 1.0 / 8
Jul 3 / 0.2 / 15
Jun 30 / 1.0 / 9

As you can see, his pitch counts are almost always fantastic. Since he's moved to the pen, he's averaging 14.8 pitches per inning pitched. Not bad at all. The occasional high pitch innings are abberations and not the norm. He's been incredibly aggressive and usually gets hitters out without laboring.

Mitre was average today. But if you think about it he really is giving you what Wang has been giving you this year. Actually Mitre first start he pitched longer than any Wang start this year. So as long as he gives you chance to win he is fine as the 5th starter.

Look at the sox. Smoltz has a 7 era, Bucholz pitched 4 innings his last start. They got Penny and Wakefield as there 3 and 4 starters. Outside of Beckett and Lester there is nothing there that scares you.

Agreed. Can't really complain about Mitre. He's out fifth starter. How many teams in the league have a solid fifth starter? Not too many. And he's not totally killing us. He's giving us innings and not letting the game get out of hand.

went to the new stadium for the first time...have mixed feelings on it. everyone around me was wondering why girardi wasn't letting mitre throw a few more pitches (he only threw like 75)...and coke was not on today by any means. but jete was the man today definitely
