Yanks interested in Downs?

Jeff Blair is a sports columnist for The Globe and Mail, and he saying the Yanks are interested in Toronto's Scott Downs. Here's what he posted on his Twitter page tonight (hat-tip to MLB Trade Rumors):
"Weird. Got e-mail from guy I trust telling me Yanks looking at Downs. Yikes!"
According to Bob Elliot of The Toronto Sun (another hat-tip to MLBTR) the Yankees had scouts at tonight's Blue Jays game to watch Halladay. Maybe they were hoping to get a glimpse of Downs as well. (Note: He gave up two runs on a hit and two walks, and took the loss.)

This year he's is 1-1, with 9 saves and a 2.59 ERA. In 31.1 innings he's allowed 9 ER on 25 hits, walked 9, and struck out 32. He's left-handed and is equally effective against lefties or righties. He's been consistently very good for three seasons - 2.17 ERA in 2007, and a 1.78 last season - and he's done it all in the AL East.

Downs is definitely a guy that would help the Yankees. A lot. For the right price I'd love to see him in pinstripes. What about you?

It looks good on paper but bullpens are so volatile I wouldn't want to give up a major prospect for him. He'd be nice guy to have but only if he comes cheap.

I'm sure they're not going to give up anything major to get a reliever. But if the price is right, I'd be happy to have him on the Yanks.

maybe he can replace bruney if things continue to go poorly for him

By and chance do you think maybe he can replace bruney if things continue to go poorly for him? Haha you accidently posted 4 times.

I'm guessing if they were to acquire Downs, they'd send Hughes down to get stretched out and he'd be the fifth starter the rest of the way. I'll take Downs gladly, he'd be a great addition.

hey guys, i just got back from Montauk for a couple days because of this streak all i want to say is Yankee Baseball- FUCK YEAH

Hughes is not leaving the bullpen. He has a 0.74 era the yanks are not dumb. Girardi said it would take Hughes 25 days to get stretched out to start. Aceves is already stretched out he will be the 6th starter if you need another starter.

And by putting another quality reliever like Downs in the bullpen The bullpen wont take a hit if Aceves goes into the rotation. Also if Bruney returns to form that will be another added weapon.

Very possible that the yanks scouts were not looking at Halladay. The yanks have seen enough of Halladay over the years they know what he is.

They were probably looking at Downs that makes much more sense. Plus I think Toronto would be willing to give him up because it would not be a major move like trading Halladay to the yanks.

The only way we could get downs if we give up a good prospect because Toronto's asking price will be high even though downs is no halladay. Bruney to toronto for downs wouldn't be bad although bruney is still valuable. Robertson and albaledejo for downs and cash? Maybe.
