A.J. Burnett didn't have his best stuff, but was still able to hold the Twins to just two runs on seven hits through 6.1 innings tonight in Minnesota as the Yanks won 4-3. Burnett had control issues all night and walked four, and of his 100 pitches, 59 were strikes. He also uncorked three wild pitches on the night, two that led to the Twins second run.

Without a good curveball for most of the night, Burnett relied mostly on his 94-97 mph fastball, throwing 71 of them. He only struck out two batters on the night, but each came at big spots in the game. His struck out Michael Cuddyer with the bases loaded in the 5th, and then Denard Span with two on and two out in the 6th. Both on curveballs, two of the few good ones he threw all night. He wasn't dominating, but he battled, and did enough to pick up his eighth win of the year.

The Yanks gave Burnett an early 3-0 lead with three in the top of the second. After loading the bases on three straight singles by Hideki Matsui, Jorge Posada, and Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher drove in the Yanks first run with an RBI ground out to the pitcher. Brett Gardner then stepped up and picked up the biggest hit of the game, a two out, two-run single extending the Yankees lead to 3-0.

Minnesota scored two runs off Burnett in the bottom of the third, one on consecutive wild pitches, and the other on a Joe Mauer RBI double.

It would remain 3-2 Yankees until the top of the fifth when Alex Rodriguez gave the Yanks an insurance run with an RBI single to drive in Derek Jeter, who had led off the inning with a double. The run would prove to be very important.

Phil Coke replaced Burnett with one out in the bottom of the seventh to face the two lefties, Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau. He immediately fell behind Mauer 3-0, and then when he had to come in with a 3-1 fastball Mauer made him pay and lauched one over the left field fence. He then struck out Morneau before being replaced by Phil Hughes.

Hughes got the last out of the seventh and then the first two in the eighth before allowing a single to Brian Buscher and giving way to Mariano Rivera for the four-out save.
I was starting to get a little nervous towards the latter innings, but as soon as Mo came into the game that all changed. He needed just two pitches to end the eighth and then just nine more in a 1-2-3 ninth. He got through the Twins so quickly, I didn't have time to worry.

The Yanks are now 50-34, a season-high 16 games over .500. They've won 12 of 14, and 7 in a row on the road. With Boston's win tonight they remain a game behind the Sox in the division.

Alfredo Aceves will take the mound for the Yanksas they go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon. He's limited to 65 pitches so it will likely be a very busy day for the bullpen. Left-hander Francisco Lirano will start for the Twins.
