(Triple-A) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (65-50) lost to Norfolk (63-54) 4-2 in game one of their doubleheader: Box Score - Recap

The SWB Yanks were defeated 4-2 at Norfolk (Orioles) in game 1 of a doubleheader forced by a rainout Wednesday night. Game 2 was rained out.

PITCHING: Romulo Sanchez got the start for the Yanks, his 9th as a starter. Sanchez got off to a very shaky start in the 1st inning. Norfolk got to him for 4 runs on 2 doubles, 2 walks, a single, stolen base, and error to take a quick 4-0 lead. He threw a perfect 2nd inning, and scoreless 3rd, allowing a walk. In the 4th, he gave up a single and made an error before being relieved. Sanchez took the loss (4-4). Sanchez' line: 3.1 IP, 4 runs, 4 hits, 3 K's--3 walks.

Mark Melancon relieved Sanchez in the 4th inning with 2 men on base, and 1 out. Melancon got a strikeout and groundout to get out of the jam. He threw a scoreless 5th, hitting a batter and picking up his 2nd K. Melancon threw a scoreless 6th giving up a single, but forced a doubleplay and picked up his 3rd strikeout. Melancon's line: 2.2 IP, 0 runs, 1 hit, 3 K--0 walks.

OFFENSE: The Yanks cut the Tides lead to 4-1 in the 4th inning off Norfolk starter Chris Waters. Shelley Duncan hit his 26th homer of the season. That was his 1st homer since July 25th and set a new SWB franchise season record. Shelley leads the league in homers. Waters threw the next pitch behind Juan Miranda and was immediately ejected along with Tides manager Gary Allenson. Cody Ransom had a leadoff double in the 7th. Ransom scored the Yanks 2nd run on a groundout RBI by Yurendell de Caster to cut the Norfolk lead to the final 4-2 score.

NOTES: Ivan Nova was activated today from the DL and was set to start game 2 had it not been postponed. Nova had been struggling with his control in his 4 starts since the all-star break after getting off to a great start in his first 3 AAA starts.
