We are lucky enough to have a SWB report from BigGuy tonight.
He won't be doing these all the time by when he does I will
post them. Thanks BG for the great contributions.
The SWB Yanks were defeated by the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay) by a score of 5-2. The loss drops their season record to 66-52. They hold a 3.5 game lead over 2nd place Syracuse in the IL Northern Division.
PITCHING: Russ Ortiz made his 3rd start for SWB in this game. He threw a scoreless 1st inning, picking up 2 strikeouts and giving up a double. Ortiz tossed a scoreless 2nd inning after giving up a leadoff single. Ortiz had his 15.2 scoreless inning streak snapped in the 3rd when he gave up a bunt single and 2-run homer by Justin Ruggiano to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead. The Bulls got to Ortiz for a solo run in the 4th on 2 bloop singles and a stolen base. He then gave up 2 walks to load the bases, but pitched out of the jam with just the 1 run scoring, giving the Bulls a 3-0 lead. Ortiz got knocked out in the 5th inning. Durham loaded the bases on 2 singles and an error. A RBI single made it 4-0 and Ortiz was relieved. Ortiz took the loss (2-1). Ortiz' line: 4.0 IP, 4 runs (3 earned), 9 hits, 3 K--2 walks.
Edwar Ramirez relieved Ortiz in the 5th with the bases loaded an no outs. Ramirez got an infield popout and 2 strikeouts to get out of the jam. Great job by Edwar . In the 6th, Durham scored a run without a hit on a walk, wild pitch, stolen base, and throwing error to up their lead to 5-0. Ramirez' line: 2.0 IP, 1 unearned run, 0 hits, 4 K--1 walk
Kevin Whelan came on to pitch a perfect 7th inning, picking up 2 strikeouts.
Amaury Sanit pitched a scoreless 8th. He gave up a single, but Chris Stewart threw out the runner attempting to steal. He had a strikeout.
OFFENSE: Durham used a bullpen-by-committee to pitch this game, with Joe Bateman getting the start. The Yanks wasted a great chance to score in the 1st inning when Kevin Russo led off the game with a double, but Bateman struck out the next 3 SWB hitters. Russo had a 1 out single in the 2nd and stolen base (12), but again was stranded at 2nd. SWB finally got on the scoreboard in the 7th. Yurendell de Caster singled, moved up to 3rd on 2 groundouts, and scored on a throwing error as Chris Stewart reached base and moved to 2nd on the error. Stewart scored the 2nd run when Kevin Russo had his 3rd hit of the game, a RBI single to cut the Durham lead to 5-2. The Yankees 3,4, and 5 hitters (Jackson, Duncan, Miranda) were 0-11 with 9 K's and a walk, and stranded 6 runners.
NOTES: Austin Jackson had 4 K's in the game, giving him 109 on the year. Jackson's average has slipped to .299. ... Shelley Duncan was back in the lineup after missing a couple games with a sore back. ... Cody Ransom put on the DL with a sore wrist. ... Josh Towers starts Monday vs Durham in series finale as SWB ends its longest road trip of the year.
