News & Notes

- Here's some UGLY numbers from Sergio Mitre via Peter Abraham: "Mitre has allowed nine runs on 16 hits in his last two innings. Opponents have hit .393 against him in his three starts this season."

- The Yanks have won six of the eight games against the Jays this year.

- The Yankees are just 19-for-81 (.235) on the road trip with RISP.

- The Yanks are 22-13 against left-handed starters this season, which is tied for the second best record in the Majors. The Angels are no. 1 with a 23-10 record against lefties. They also lead the Majors with a .295 batting average against southpaws.

- Derek Jeter leads all of baseball with a .434 batting average against lefties.

- Alex Rodriguez has not homered in 57 at-bats.

- Mariano Rivera has converted 31-of-32 save opportuinities this season. And in save situations has an ERA of just 0.81. He's converted 27 straight saves which is the longest such streak in the Majors.

- In case you did not know, Cody Ransom has been designated for assignment and Anthony Claggett has been added to the roster.

- Thanks to Evan Longria's two homer game last night the Yankees now lead Boston by 1.5 games in the AL East.

Stick around and discuss the game
as it happens in the comments section.

Good article about Andy throwing his cutter.

http://www.nj.com/yankees/index.ssf/2009/08/ny_yankees_pitcher_andy_pettit.html

Molina is a good defensive catcher. Good job by Molina getting Andy to throw his cutter. I didn't understand why he wasn't throwing it in the first half of the season. Since the allstar break his strikeouts are way up and his era is 2.36.

Has Molina caught Mitre in any of his starts before?

SteveB said...

Is anyone comfortable with Swisher batting behind A-Rod?

While I understand 'the why' of this lineup before the Sox series, tonight the Yankees are going to need to score runs. This lineup isn't scaring anybody.

Greg Cohen said...

I agree, Steve.

I don't think he needs to sit Matsui all the time against lefties, the guy is a pro and the way he hit that ball against Halladay last night, he might just be starting to get hot.

Capone said...

Once again Girardi has managed to irritate me with his lineup. Who gives a shit if there's a lefty on the mound. seriously...

Brian Danuff said...

I think the Yanks have a good chance of winning tonight. Mitre's the only thing I'm worried about.

Speaking of Mitre, if he gets lit up tonight, the Yanks should send him down/DFA him and bring up Kei Igawa to take his place.

Don't call me crazy just yet. He's had a decent year in Scranton, and the only reason everyone bags on him is because he stunk in '07. That was 2 years ago. He must have improved by now, and I think he can do a better job than Mitre.

Why wasn't he throwing it? One word: Posada. Worst catcher in the bigs and he will be the downfall if the Yankees persist on using him.

Greg Cohen said...

Posada isn't playing tonight Anon.

Anyway, I know he hasn't been hit hard, but Mitre just can't get MLB hitters out. Not trading for a pitcher will continue to bite this team in the ass until they add an arm.

Greg Cohen said...

For the love of God Robbie, take a few damn pitches.

Greg Cohen said...

Yep, just follow your idiot friend Melky and swing at the first strike you see. That's definitely a winning recipe.... Ughhhhh.

boston losing 2 1 pena homered now a yankee win would really make it a happy night should rays win.

Gotta love Cashman. 2 years in a row he ruined this teams chances with poor moves at the trade deadline. Last year he gave up 4 players for 2 questionable ones and then made our BP worse by trading Farnesworth. This year he does nothing. What a horrible GM we have.

And just look at Mitre. Another Cashman guy. This guy does nothign but give up runs. How friggin dumb is Cashman. Any GM that lets Ransom stay on his team for 100 games while Pena and Cervelli play awesome is mind boggling. But then again this is why Cashman has NEVER won anything of his doing. That's why his playoff teams SUCK.

4 1 rays

Greg Cohen said...

What a throw by Molina.

Greg Cohen said...

Another crappy start for Mitre. 3 runs allowed in just 4.1. Not gonna cut it.

Aceves looks sharp tonight.

Greg Cohen said...

Yup he does... Also, Boston just cut the Rays' lead to 4-2 with a solo homer by Victor Martinez.

Greg Cohen said...

YEA SWISH! Tie game!

Anonymous said...

Wooooo!

Now Cano doubles. This is our chance.

Greg Cohen said...

Nice job by Melky and Matsui. 4-3 Yanks!

Greg Cohen said...

Meanwhile in Tampa, the Rays just extended their lead to 5-2 with a solo homer by Pat Burrell.

Brian Danuff said...

I just realized something. The Mets won 9-0 today. But on many websites it says that Bobby Parnell got the save. How is that possible?

Greg Cohen said...

Hey YB, Fiueroa got the win today.

Greg Cohen said...

Rays win! 2.5 game lead here we come.

Brian Danuff said...

Oh, okay.

Boston lost 6-3, it's a final. So a win here will give the Yanks a nice 2.5 game lead heading back to the Bronx.

Brian Danuff said...

BALLGAME OVER!! YANKEES WIN!! THAAAAAAAA YANKEES WIN!!

2.5 game lead and we are riding high into the Boston series.

Greg Cohen said...

Big win tonight with Boston coming in tomorrow.

MP said...

Nice win for the bombers

i like that we're starting to put some distance between the sox and us

Brian Danuff said...

Oh yeah. This is the big one. Another Boston Massacare is brewing, I can feel it.

Brian Danuff said...

We are actually catching Boston at the perfect time. They've had a rocky 2nd half so far and are coming off getting swept by the Rays. Meanwhile we are riding high, having won 3 straight and getting very good pitching and hitting. That's why we are going to win this series.

See ya tomorrow guys.

GO YANKEES!!

Greg Cohen said...

Hey YB, you wanna right the game summary tonight?

crossfire said...

Up 2 1/2.

I am going to the game tomorrow. Heard tonight that they are honoring Ali before the game. Ali beat Ken Norton at the Stadium back in 1976.

I have always been a huge Ali fan!

Greg Cohen said...

What impressed me the most tonight was Aceves and the Yankees situational hitting. If they start doing the little things regularly they will be tough to beat. I still wish they'd add a real pitcher, though.

Greg Cohen said...

I heard that too Crossfire, that's really cool. Have a great time, I hope you see a win.

JoeV said...

Why can't JoeG keep Mo out of a game. 4 run lead and you get your closer up.

Greg Cohen said...

That's a day off to Girardi.

JC said...

I don't think Mitre was all that bad. Two of the runs in the first were pretty damn cheap. Three grounders that found holes and a bloop heat. We need to remember that he's coming back from Tommy John surgery; he's gonna need some time.

Not seeing he should remain as our fifth starter, but I do think the Yanks should hold onto him.

crossfire said...

Mitre still worries me but I agree his outing wasn't as bad as it looked on paper.

With that said, I still don't have much confidence in him. Hopefully he pitches better in his upcoming starts.
