News & Notes

- In two starts against the Sox as a Yankee A.J. Burnett is 0-1, with a 12.91 ERA. In 7.2 IP he's allowed 11 ER on 13 H, walked 8, and struck out 4.

- Josh Beckett is 9-4 with a 5.42 ERA in 15 career starts against the Yanks. This season he's 2-0, with a 5.82 ERA in two games against them.

Peter Abraham is reporting that Ramiro Pena has been called up. Probably Anthony Claggett heads back to Scranton.

- The Yanks have won four in a row and are 3.5 games ahead of Boston in the AL East.

- Since losing two out of three to the Nationals from June 16-18, the Yankees are 15-3 at home. They also rank first in the AL with a 36-17 home record. Only the Giants (37-16) are better.

- Boston is just 7-11 in their last 18 games, 24-21 since June 13th, and just 27-28 on the road.

- Alex Rodriguez has not homered in 66 at-bats.

- Mariano Rivera has converted 31-of-32 save opportunities this season. In save situations has an ERA of just 0.81. He's converted 27 straight saves which is the longest such streak in the Majors.

Update: 4:18 p.m.: Adam Kilgore is reporting that the Red Sox have called up RHP Junichi Tazawa, and have also claimed INF Chris Woodward off waivers from Seattle. He thinks Billy Traber will be sent down. That would make the most sense.

Update 5:17 p.m.: Rob Bradford is reporting that the Red Sox designated John Smoltz for assignment today. The guy had a great hall of fame career, but he really looked done last night. This is probably it for Smoltz

Stick around and discuss the game
as it happens in the comments section.

Why does pena and hairston have to be on this team at the same time? isnt that he reason cody got booted?

Greg Cohen said...

Good question.

bruceb said...

Very happy to see Pena back. If nothing else, we need him to pinch run and provide a bit of speed on the bases. Didn't realize how much we would miss "Gardy" as Mr. Girardi calls him.

Emmanuel said...

According to Michael Kay, Smoltz DFA'd

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Smoltz being DFA'd is offical. Alex Rios was also claimed on waivers by an unknown team.

SteveB said...

Traber being DFA'd is one of those appropriate but sad roster decisions. Last night Traber essentially saved the whole Boston bullpen by taking one for the team for 3 2/3 innings.

Anonymous said...

They are probably going to send Melancon down tommorow because of Gaudin. Thats too bad he is pitching very well. Its probably better he can get regular work. He does have a bright future though.

Dont understand the point in calling up Pena. But whatever he will be sent down whenever Gardner is ready.

John Henry's twitter sure has been quite.

Mario said...

WTF is wrong with the YES network, it keeps blinking, at least the HIGH DEFT channel, the regular fuzzy channel is fine

Mario said...

if smoltz was smart, he'd sign with atlanta, & retire...

Mario said...

does it seem AJ gets too amped up or what for the bigger games, i hate beckett but he does seem to have ice in his veins, compared to most big game pitchers

Anonymous said...

Wow, two pitches that were completely off the plate called strikes to Damon. Great job, ump.

Mario said...

from 3-0 to 3-2 strike 3, on the corner... alex needs something

Mario said...

wow posada, nice throw, i hate that little midget/muppet pedroia

JC said...

I hate Pedroia, too. He's a little punk.

Anonymous said...

I know Melky's been clutch or whatever, but against Beckett, you have to get on the board first... Melky should have bunted the runners over, make sure you get that first run in. Against another pitcher I might not do it, but against Beckett, you have to get that run on the board, then go from there.

JC said...

Eh, I can see it either way. Melky's been swinging a hot bat, so I don't have too big of an issue with him swinging away. I probably would've bunted, too, though.

Dave said...

i agree 100% you have to have melky bunt right there. i dont care if its early in the game or cause he homered last night...against beckett you need every run you can get especially in a 0-0 game thru 3

Anonymous said...

mario, shut ya yip, bitch and moan, bitch and moan, go change your tampax.

JC said...

Why do people need to post anonymously? Is it that hrd to stick a name in there?

chris said...

Sorry about that I'm the anonymous that posted saying they should have bunted.

AJ fantastic through 5... have to get some runs now...........

JC said...

Nah, I was more referring to people who post calling other people names... But they hide behind the "anonymous" name.

chris said...

SOB why couldn't Cano's ball have gotten into the corner

JC said...

Possibly a big base-running mistake here by Matsui. He should be on third.

chris said...

And the strike three to Swisher is WELL outside.

JC said...

Come on, Jeet. We need to get on the board.

chris said...

FREAKING HECK Jeter I love you man but you have to show a little more patience in that situation and lay off those pitches in on your hands.

chris said...

Ok, walking Nick Green on 4 pitches? Extremely bad idea.

Anonymous said...

Is it me, or does Terry Francona look like Harry Potter with those glasses on?

Unknown said...

How many times can Posada almost blow an inning?

a7tex said...

alright now lets get some runs and move 4.5 up!!!!!!

Mario said...

paulie the comedian, (michael Kay) "pedroia leaves his feet as better as any other 2B, paulie, "he doesn't have far to go!!!" LOL

Anonymous said...

Michael Kay is the worst announcer in the history of professional sports. He makes at least one mistake every broadcast.

Mario said...

the ideal spot to pinch run gardner here, but he's hurt, of course

a7tex said...

bad call by girardi

Mario said...

total waste of another inning, only positive out of that was Beckett might be out of the game after extending him in the matsui at bat...

Anonymous said...

Posada is a moron. He has seen a million pitches in his day and can't recognize what Beckett was gonna do there? Pathetic.

Girardi is even dumber. He sends the slowest runner with the worst hitter up. Brilliant. This the same idiot who kept Ransom and continually starts Posada.

Mario said...

screwed again

JC said...

That call better not hurt us. Such bullshit.

Luckily, it didn't.

crossfire said...

Bullshit call.

Good job by Hughes though.

What a great game by Burnett.

Anonymous said...

Idiot Yankee hitters. Okamjemaaajajaam blows. He has ONE pitch. An 82 MPH changeup. The only thing they should be doing is SITTING on that pitch. Plus, his fastball is not even 90 mph. Get a fuckign clue $20m hitters. Ditto for the hittign coach and staff.

Mario said...

y bring in mo, hughes was fine, stupid move,

Unknown said...

I agree. Should have left Hughes in with Mo warming up in case.

Mario said...

alright damit, damon, tex, arod, AROD is especially due, overdue, 69 at bats w/o a homer

Unknown said...

Good pitch to swing at Jorge. It hit you after it bounced off the dirt.

Anonymous said...

You suck Posada. YOu're so easy to get out with 2 strikes and every team and picther in the league knows how. Throw a breaking ball a mile out of the strike zone in the dirt and GUARANTEED you will swing. After 15 years taht is complete failure. Then you dont run. Great example you are for the kids. But, please blah about your charity work garbage. Idiots.

Anonymous said...

That pitch to Ellsbury shows exactly how bad Posada, Girardi and Eiland are. It is right down the friggin middle with 2 strikes. THROW ONE IN THE DIRT LIKE EVERY OTHER TEAM DOES MORONS. Great call by PISSada.

Mario said...

well posada's days behind the plate are numbered with Cervelli, Montero, Romine coming up, Next season you have to figure he'll be DH more often then catching...

Anonymous said...

Why next season? Why not now? Why not 5 years ago?

And, there is $20m at work. Ridiculous.

But, hey as long as we get universal healthcare so the poor little, to lazy too work africans are taken care of. 12% of the population. APARTHEID.

Did you idiots know you were voting for a hybrid of Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton/Jimmy Carter and Pharaoh.

And, there was a famine in EGYPT.....

DUH!

will said...

Jeter has blown three chances with risp. He is the goat of the game.

Mario said...

OK< leave the political bullshit off the blog, retard anonymous.
YOU ARE SUCH A TOOL.....

Anonymous said...

I'll do whatever I want to do. You do. The africans do, while STEALING everyone's money and so dont the politicians. Furthermore, you bring up YOUR religion everyday. You bother me one more time about it or attempt to take away my free speech ONE MORE TIME, then I will do NOTHING but bother this site. GOt it?

These last 2 innings are EXACTLY why this team can't win playoff games and cant beat good teams.

Unknown said...

Greg,

I cant take much more of this game bro... Im so stressed the fuck out.

D

CollinM said...

^^^ What the hell?

Forget this anonymous posting bullshit. Maybe this site should require posters to register an IP address. It's the only way we can keep assholes like this guy away....

Anyway, will somebody please jack one and end this? Both bullpens are going to be burnt out and we have two crucial games left to play.

daneptizl said...

It gives us the edge tomorrow since CC's a horse and Buchholz would be lucky to go 5 innings.

Anonymous said...

Another idiot Yankee hitter who tries to pull an outside pitch instead of going with the pitch the other. Friggin pathetic. Everybody wants to hit a 20 run HR for no reason. They must have learned their idiocy from Posada, Obamanation and the DEMONcrabs.

All's you needed was a single idiot Cabrera.

Greg Cohen said...

Hey people, just got back from dinner and a bar.... this game is taking years off my life, but my goodness what a classic.

Greg Cohen said...

Nice inning for Bruney. WIN THIS NOW!

WIN. THIS. NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mario said...

hey anonymous, i'll be in ny the weekend after labor day, for the make up game vs LAA angels, wanna meet and discuss stuff? like what a tool you are...

Anonymous said...

Another stupid Yankee hitter who swings at a 3-1 pitch way out of the srrike zone. What was that $100m that came to bat. Friggin losers.

Greg Cohen said...

Anon, go away you moron.

daneptizl said...

Damn, I thought it was gone...

Greg Cohen said...

That was way too close for comfort. Bruney needs to get back in the strike zone.

Anonymous said...

Sure, Pharao lover. I will be at the UN building where the statue has a Scripture from Isaiah 2:4. Know where this is race mixer? Or are you fking stupid Egypt worshipper?

I will be protesting the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which led to the ruin of our public schools, american economy and a skyrocketing prision population made of 76% africans while only making up 12% of our general population. It also led to unprecedented illiteracy, vd and abortion rates. Pharaoh lover.

Greg Cohen said...

Is anyone warming? I don't feel good at all with Bruney still on the mound.

Unknown said...

Can someone please end this? ...........It feels like yesterday that Burnett pitched a great game.....Oh, it was yesterday.

Mario said...

seriously anonymous, you must be the biggest loser next to the guy who cowardly shot those women in the gym in pittsburgh, ....i'm done fighting with u, yankee fans like you give yankees universe a bad name...

Greg Cohen said...

Boy to these pitchers deserve a ton of credit. What a freaking game being pitched on BOTH sides.

This is our inning. We win this here.

Unknown said...

Pinch hit Pena - I have a feeling he's got a dinger in him...

Mario said...

come on hinske, time to write ur name in the yankee universe vs the hated red sux

Mario said...

SOB, 2 hits that matsui's and hinske's this game would be over...

Unknown said...

OHHH...what a play!!!

c'mon Melky

Mario said...

good eye melky

Mario said...

FUBARED, i hate J.D. Drew but that was a hell of a catch.

chris said...

Unbelievable. We deserved to score there SO much. Matsui lining a shot to CF for the out to lead off the inning, JD Drew - an average fielder - robs Hinske (why couldn't that ball have hooked an extra foot?) and then Melky misses by inches. I hate that, I really hate that.

Mario said...

CC has to pitch a complete game tomorrow, oops later today,

chris said...

Good job Cokey. We win it here. I haven't said that all night until now, so now it's go time. WE WIN IT HERE

Greg Cohen said...

This is great. This is why I love baseball so much. I have no nails. I'm drunk. My heart is beating a thousand times a minute. And I'm a run away from going absolutely nuts.

Mario said...

nice, 1-2-3 inning, coke looked good, please for the love of god, mercy rule derek, damon, tex, arod, you are all DUE< over freaking due, especially derek and arod

chris said...

gross that 1-1 called strike to Jeter was WAYYYYYY outside.

chris said...

Lead off single for Jeter, here we come, come on baby

Greg Cohen said...

Screw the bunt... Hit & run!

Mario said...

ok, i'd rather have jeter steal here, on the rookie, & let damon swing away

chris said...

AHHHHHH I can't take it come on Yankees

chris said...

Oh my god what a terrible bunt. The pitch was over his head. WTF

Mario said...

retard damon, doesn'[t know how to pull the bunt back on BALLS

chris said...

Come on Tex, please

chris said...

Oh Tex, good lord. We are just up there hacking right now.

Mario said...

OMG, WTF, i can not believe you retards can't catch up to this rookie

chris said...

This ump is terrible, seriously, the strike zone is huge. It's no surprise it's scoreless.

Mario said...

thank u, thank u, thank u alex

Mario said...

welcome to the majors KID

Greg Cohen said...

Thank you A-Rod. Thank you so much.

Great, great, great baseball game.

Mario said...

crossfire said...

SteveB said...

Holey Moley.

crossfire said...

My wife... a mets fan... walked in the room... said "15th inning??? This game is going to end right here. Good night."

She no sooner walked out of the room and ARod jacked it!

Greg Cohen said...

I think that was A-Rod's moment. He's had his big hits, that one might top them all. No more boos fans.

chris said...

Oh hell yes. I just got done running around my house. I f---ing called that right there. AWESOME what a classic. This team has some character right now man. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

crossfire said...

How friggin' sweet was that?

Seriously.... how sweet was that??????

chris said...

While I have nothing against the Tazawa kid, this is poetic justice to the Red Sox for violating the "unwritten agreement" between MLB and Japan not to sign their unsigned youngsters.

Just flat out awesome.

Greg Cohen said...

I don't know about you folks but I'm blasting New York New York right now.

Greg Cohen said...

And yes CF, that was freaking sweet.

classic game

crossfire said...

Man... it's 2 am and I'm still buzzing. I wanted this game really bad. It was a great game on both sides but the Yanks were better.

4 1/2 up.

Sweet baby... sweet!

Maybe I can get some sleep now... but I doubt it.

JC said...

Hey jackass Anon, stop bitching about Posada as a catcher. He just caught 14 SCORELESS innings, you idiot.

Anonymous said...

I just got home from the game. In the 12th inning, something popped into my head that the game was going to end in the 15th. To see it actually happen then was mind blowing. I was at the Castillo game and this one tops it.

crossfire said...

Wow... the Castillo game and this one? Very cool. Probably the two most memorable at the new Stadium so far.
