Kepner: Yanks Still Have Something To Prove In Boston

From Tyler Kepner:
The Yankees are 76-45, too many games over .500 to be a fluke. This is easily their best team in several years, and the rough patches in their schedule – the interleague games in June, the series in Anaheim in July – have been quickly followed by prolonged dominance.

As they arrive in Boston for a weekend series at Fenway Park, the Yankees have won 14 of their last 17 games. Their starters are 9-3 with a 2.46 earned run average in the last 13 games, with opponents hitting a meager .211. The setup men are getting the ball to Mariano Rivera, who has 32 saves in a row, the longest streak of his career.
...

Still, there are things to prove this weekend, where Fenway Park offers as close to a hostile playoff atmosphere as the Yankees will see until October.

A.J. Burnett, who starts Saturday, has been bombed in two starts at Fenway this season. We have not seen how the revamped setup crew – Alfredo Aceves, Dave Robertson, Brian Bruney, Phil Coke, Phil Hughes – will handle a lead in Boston. And though the late-summer Yankees are better than the team that went 0-6 there in the first-half, they still need that first win on Yawkey Way.
Kepner also has this quote from Mark Teixeira:
“We haven’t won a game there this year,” Mark Teixeira said. “We don’t want to go 0-fer in Boston.”
That's true Tex. We fans don't want you guys "to go o-fer in Boston" either.

If you're wondering, yes I agree with Kepner. The Yanks have to prove they can beat Boston in their home park. This will become even more important if the two teams meet once again in mid October.

Bruney is 2-0 with a 1.45 era in 18.2 ip against the red sox. Historically he is fine against the red sox. Coke is fine against leftys. Aceves is fine. Robertson is not going to be used in a high leverage situation.

The only guy that you would love to see something from in the bullpen is Hughes. I would love to see Hughes with a 1 run lead in the 8th shut down the the red sox in fenway. That would be great for his devolopment.

But I disagree with Kepner red sox have more to prove than the yankees this series. The 4 game series at the stadium was a must win and that was the series where the yankees had to make a statement.

I don't know if he's saying the Yanks have more to prove than Boston, but just that they still have something to prove; that they can win in Fenway.

The only thing Hughes has to watch out for is the green monster. I'm watching the replay of the 15 inning game on yes. And Pedroia in the 8th hit the ball hard off Hughes to leftcenter for an out that would of been a homerun at fenway.

Thats why I cant hear people like Gammons & ESPN complain about the rightfield dimensions at the new stadium. Look at Boston home and away splits they are different offense at fenway.

Winning 2 out of 3 would put the nail in coffin for the red sox at having any chance to win the al east. At worse the yanks have to win 1 game the yanks cannot get swept.

Seems like a bit of nik picking. I mean they have to prove they can win at Fenway....um okay.
They're arguably the best team in baseball so there's nothing to complain about but question whether this team can win at Fenway... whatever.
If push came to shove I'm very sure they can win at Fenway. Good teams win anywhere.
This reminds me of the same stuff before they swept them- "can they beat Boston, they're 0-8 etc.."

Like I said sounds like a writer reaching for something negative to write about the Yankees.

Might not even matter as this could be the last time they're in Boston.

Anon, it's easy to say they're a good team and can win anywhere, but they haven't proved that yet. Nobody can argue that, it's a fact. They have no won a game in Fenway, or in LA either. So I do think it's important they at least take one of these games.

As for Kepner, I don't think he's saying they can't win in Fenway, just saying that they need to. It's hard to disagree with that.

If they go into Fenway and get swept again that will be very bad news.

Amazing how so many folks are worried about a team with so many flaws, who are mediocre against the AL, under .500 on the road and are 6 .5 games out of first. and in a dog fight with the Rangers who they've had a hard time with.

So what if they haven't won at Fenway......yet.
Yankees where a different team when they played in Fenway earlier in the season.

Nobody, I repeat, nobody, is saying the Yankees can't win in Fenway. They just haven't, and it would be kinda nice if they did.

Greg, why do you keep saying the Yanks can't win in Fenway?

Hey my personal opinion is that the Yankees do have something to prove. We need to win 2 of 3 at the least. We need to bury boston. We need to show all boston fans out there that even the red sox with their historically dominance at fenway can not stop this Yankee team. That is what I want and hope to see. Just put them out of their misery so we can concentrate on just resting people and setting up the rotation.
