It may not have been the performance we expected but at least the Yanks were able to take one game in Chicago. Most of the credit for today's win goes to center fielder Melky Cabrera who picked up the Yankees first cycle since Tony Fernandez did it back in 1995. He hit a three-run homer in the second, a double in the fourth, an RBI single in the fifth, and a triple in the ninth. For the day he went 4-for-5, with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored. Besides the great day he had at the plate, he also made a terrific diving catch in center in the bottom of the first to robb Jermaine Dye of an RBI single. And here's the stat of the day: it was the first cycle by a Yankee on the road since Joe DiMaggio did it on 5/20/1948 also in Chicago against the White Sox, how about that?

CC Sabathia got the start for the Yanks and was OK. He lasted 7, which is good, but allowed 5 earned runs on 10 hits, did not walk a batter and struck out 5. After the Yanks had spotted him a 3-0 lead he gave up four runs in the third on a double, a single, and then back-to-back homers. After the four-run outburst CC settled down and was solid the rest of the way. He was charged with a fifth run in the 8th when Mariano Rivera allowed a two-out RBI single to Carlos Quentin.

While he pitched well enough for a win, it was still far from what I expected from the Yanks "ace". He now has a very pedestrian 3.95 ERA.

Luckily for the Yanks, Mark Buehrle was even worse and the Yanks didn't wait long to regain their lead. In the top half of the fourth they scored two runs to take a 5-4 lead. The runs came on RBI singles from Jose Molina and Johnny Damon.

They would add two more in the top of the fifth on two more RBI singles by Melky and Jerry Hairston Jr. who, for the second day in a row, had a very nice game. Not only did he go 2-for-3 with an RBI, but he made two plays at third that Alex Rodriguez wouldn't have come close to.

After Melky's triple in the ninth the Yanks added one more insurance run when Derek Jeter hit a two-out RBI single to extend the Yanks lead to 8-5.

Phil Hughes allowed a walk and struck out 2 in his two-thirds of an inning. Mariano came on for the final four outs and besides that RBI single did the job to pick up his 30th save of the season.

The Yanks were unable to add to their lead in the east because down in Baltimore the Red Sox battered the O's 18-10. By the way, newly acquired Victor Martinez had a career-high five hits today along with 4 RBI.

Tomorrow is an off day for the Bronx Bombers. On Tuesday they will open up a short two-game series with the Blue Jays in Toronto, and they will have to face Roy Halladay in game one. Andy Pettitte will get the ball for the Yanks.
