Mo Sore, But Should Be Available Tomorrow

For those wondering where Mariano was today, he was unavailable because he told Girardi he had a sore shoulder. Here's more on Mariano from The Journal News' Josh Thomson:

Mariano Rivera didn’t throw at all today and was unavailable to pitch. “He was feeling a little cranky today,” Joe Girardi said. Rivera told us his right shoulder was sore, but he did not classify the soreness as painful. He said he has felt this pain before and felt fine soon after. Girardi said he’d be “shocked” if Rivera weren’t available tomorrow in Seattle.

Now, that’s not all the Rivera news. We were told by a team spokesman that Rivera will not fly to Seattle with the club. He will, however, be in Seattle for the game tomorrow. The transportation change is not related to anything medical, we were told.

Not sure what to make of him not traveling with the team, but for now I will suspend disbelief and take the Yankees word when they say it's not injury related.

As for the rest of the info. I really hope Girardi is right when he says he'd be shocked if Mo wasn't available tomorrow. The last thing this team needs right now is an injury to Rivera.

As far as the rest of the injuries today; Derek Jeter's X-rays were negative and expects to play in Seattle tomorrow. Alex Rodriguez had an X-rays taken of his left elbow, which also came back negative. He will sit tomorrow. And Jorge Posada will also likely get the day off tomorrow after getting beat up behind the plate today.

Blame this "soreness" on Captain Ahab and his quest for 27. Anyone could see that Mo's last few times out, he wasn't the same. I suspect he's held back for an MRI and then either fly out if it's clear or on the DL.

That's true, he hasn't been the same. His command is off and he got hit hard a couple times. At least hit hard considering it's Mariano Rivera.

I'm worried about the next few series. They're pretty banged up right now and Boston looks like they're about to catch fire. When they head into Fenway much of that five game lead could be gone.

This road trip could be huge.

The 91mph and the walks was the tip off. I wonder who will be the next burnout. Hughes?

Mariano's been worked pretty hard this year. He always has a period like this around this time of year.

Mike N. said...

I'm not all that worried about Hughes, he's built up enough arm strength as a starter that its probably not going to be an issue.

They can't afford an injury to Hughes or another starter.

I agree Mike N. -- JoeG will play A-Rod until his leg falls off. A-Rod is another guy who could use a few days off. But without Cody, who else does Joe have? ;o)

Well, he does have Eric Hinske and Ramiro Pena if he needs a third baseman.

With C.C. pitching tomorrow, you're going to see a weak lineup. Figure on Posada and either A-Rod or Jeter getting the day. Maybe even both but I doubt that Joe goes that far.

According to Girardi, A-Rod and Posada will sit tomorrow. So the lineup will probably be

Jeter SS (likely)
Damon LF
Tex 1B
Matsui DH
Cano 2B
Swisher RF
Melky CF
Hairston 3B
Molina C

Without Jeter, Pena plays short a bats 8th or 9th.

I dont know how people are blaming Girardi for Mo being sore. Girardi is very good at resting guys in the bullpen. You saw it on sunday night when he didn't want to go to Hughes.

If Mo needs a couple of days that is fine. If it is a save situation just use Bruney in the 8th and Hughes in the 9th.

I agree, you can't blame Girardi for this.

Mo has not been overused, I don't know where that idea is coming from. He's on pace for 70.0 innings. He hasn't pitched less than 70 innings since 2002.

This is probably just normal shoulder fatigue. Aceves had the same thing, and he's fine now. It's just about that time of year where guys going through the occasional soreness/stiffness. Heck, i'm 30 and if I go out in the yard and toss a few throws my elbow hurts, my shoulder hurts.

I don't think it's the number of innings but more of too many days in a row. There have been a number of games where Mo has come in with 4 or 5 run lead or had to get up and start warming up - Mo didn't get in the game but still had to get up. It looks to me that at one stretch it was Ace, Hughes and Mo everyday. I don't think Robertson or Melanchon pitched for 3 weeks. Mo is now 40 and could use more time off or at least avoid the 5 out saves.

the second Mariano is not in there for a save situation and the yanks blow the game. All the fans would be screaming at Girardi for not using Mariano and giving him a day off.
