As part of the Joba Rules, the pitcher will have eight days' rest heading into his next scheduled start, Tuesday against the Rangers.Instead of using the extra days off to throw, Chamberlain has laid low.
"We told him during this extra stretch to just take a couple of days off," Girardi said. "You don't necessarily have to pick up a ball, just take a couple of days off then we'll get you on your five-man schedule. I just told him to relax."
Chamberlain will play catch on Wednesday -- the first of any pitching work he's done since his last start on Sunday against the Mariners. He will also play catch on Friday before throwing a bullpen session on Saturday.
"I just thought it was a good idea," Girardi said of taking it easy on Chamberlain. "I think he gets tired about always talking about it and answering questions."
Apparently the Yanks think these off days could be a way of recreating his all-star break vacation back home in Nebraska. While it remains to be seen what good or bad these days off will do, but I still think the constant changes in routine are screwing with the kid's head.

Greg don't mean to get off topic, any idea when the next chat will be? I missed the first few.
There will be at least one chat during this weekend's Sox series. Game 1 on Friday is pretty much a definite. Then probably another on Sunday night.
cool. thanks for the info.
i agree greg, all this changing of the rules is sure to mess up his routine and pitchers are all about routine.
I wonder what the other pitchers on the staff think of this circus?
I'm guessing they think it's a joke.
If he takes this break is he then on a regular schedule for the remainder of the year? If thats the case I think this isnt a bad comprimise as you can still get your inning limits and be in the flow of things come playoff time. I have to think that shutting it down and starting back up so much cant be good for the arm.

Question: in the past when there were 4-man rotations, did the pitchers throw between starts or did they just rest up for the next one?
What is it about this guy that he needs all of this bs treatment that I've never heard about when it comes to other pitchers? Just what is going on? Is he that fragile physically? Mentally? The toehr pitchers on the staff must see it as a joke indeed.
I want to like this guy a lot, but I'm just not sure about what's going on.
I'll be at all the Texas games (two in Section 204 in The Bleachers)--will any of you guys be there for any of the games?
Mike
I could understand the concern if Joba was having a Vida Blue first year, but what exactly are they protecting? And why aren't there Hughes-rules, or for that matter ______(fill in the blank) rules for any of the pitchers? It's OK to burn out Bruney or Mo?
there are rules for hughes - that's why he's in the bullpen
This isn't Joba fault. This is the yankees own fault for rushing him to the minors. Now they have to devolop him as a starter on the major league level instead of the minor leage level.
Also the press makes too big of a deal about this. "New Rule Joba is not throwing a baseball for a couple of days" That is insane that they were writing stories about this. Joba might be the most scrutinized player in baseball.
Hughes will be in the same scenario as Joba next year if he is starting. Because he is not going to come anywhere close to his innings limit this year out of the bullpen.
What happens when the rules are over and he turns out to be not all that good? I hope that's not the case but right now it seems pretty silly considering the Yankees have no idea if he's ever going to reach his apparent ace potential.
