When Letterman tried to get what he called "a little bulletin-board material" out of Teixeira, the slugger demurred, and it led to a funny conversation about Teixeira's notorious slow starts.Here's the full segment that I found on Youtube:
"What's the problem? Aren't you getting the work in in spring training?" Letterman asked.
"I don't know," Teixeira replied. Letterman got laughs when he then asked, "Hey, do you even go to spring training? You know, that's why it's down there."
"You know what, there's a lot of work put in there, but it just doesn't translate in April for me," Teixeira said. "I want to keep the people here sweating a little bit in New York.... We don't want to just go to first place right away and have me hitting all these home runs, make them sweat a little bit."
"Yeah," Letterman said, "you want to taunt the New York fans ..."
"I thought that one through, didn't I?" Teixeira said, laughing.
