I'll write my opinion on this one tomorrow in the series preview, but for now I want to know what you guys think.
The Yankees head into Fenway at least a 6.5 game lead and 41 games to play.
So fans, what do you think that Yankees need to do going into this series? Remember, this isn't what do you want them do to, we all want a sweep. This is a question about what they need to do.

They need to NOT get swept. If we can take one or even better two we are in great shape. If the Sox sweep us its gonna be a very interesting September.
yes greg, i know, it's been years! lol
what we need to do is just stay consistent and hungry. keep pitching well, and takin' care of the defense. do what we can with our offense, and we'll be fine. but we just need to stay consistent and hungry. don't let the sweep play with our mindset
Hey Bentton, where have you been, man?
ugh, working, taking care of family stuff, and just tryin' to get ready for school. but i'm back in the flash, ready to see the yanks take #27!
i want to see a swager series. hard clean slides into 2nd base - posada willing to block the plate - pitchers work aggresively inside-jeter quit making small talk with evryone at second base- of ers laying out for balls- stealing bases on that numb nuts varitek like no tomorrow- my dream was that bret gardner be back for this series and steal home --go yanks deliver the death nell!!!!
Nice, welcome back!
You missed a couple live chats. They've gone really well and we're gonna have two this weekend. One tomorrow night, and another for Sunday's game.
A "swagger series" ..... I like that. Nice term anon.
i can't make the sunday night one, cause i'll be at work, but i'll definitely make tomorrow night's one for sure!
sorry i can't spell when I'm pumped up swagger thank you for my spell check!
I think the Yankees will take 2 out of 3, but I feel it is important that they also take game 1 of the series so they can stop any momentum building the sox can do.
The pitching match ups seem to favor the Yanks. Pettitte against Penny
Burnett against Tazawa
Sabathia against Burnett.
Theoretically we should take game 1. Brad Penny has been awful of late, but Andy also has those spells where he'll look good for 3 innings then tread water for the next 3. He looked good in Seattle, hope it continues. Penny also got beat up by the Rangers last time. He had 50 pitches thru 2 innings then need 70 more to get 10 more outs.
Advantage Yankees.
Game 2 should also be had by the Yanks.
Burnett has been very spotty of late. No wins in his last 4 with 2 losses in the 4 starts. But his last start against the Sox at home was great, that was the game that went 15, he only gave up one hit in 7 and 2/3 innings. Tazawa will be making his second start so who knows what to expect, but Arod ended the 15 inning affair on him and the Rangers knocked him around pretty good too.
Advantage Yankees.
Game 3, Sabathia against Burnett is a toss up. Both are great, both are cy young worthy and both are having great seasons. This is going to be a duel, hopefully Big Slim can contain the sox and beat beckett.
Advantage, Dead Even.
Hahahhaha, no problem Anon.
They need to bitch slap Boston.
in the face.
I want to see a play hard or go home mentality. If they cant take the series at least beat them in a fight
Surprised Sox are pitching Lester tonight in Toronto. The Jays are such a shambles these days they could win that one with Stevie Wonder on the mound. Yes, the pitching matchups favor us but I am a little concerned about our lack of offense, and A-Rod in particular. You have to score runs to win at Fenway and apart from our six-run outburst in one inning in Seattle, we've been pretty quiet of late.
They only need to win one of the three, anything more is gravy.
Personally, I see this to be a very tense hard-fought series. Everyone seems to forget that the Sox play very well in their home yard. For them, this is a do-or-die series and the Nation will be pumped up for this round. Anyone who thinks the Yanks is going to get out of Fenway without a fingerprint on them is out of their mind IMO.
Game One just smells like it’s going to be a pure “Friday Night Special” A typical “Rock-em, Rock-em” affair. As we say during my playing days. Two squads going back and forth with the first team that scores last wins.
Pitching-wise we need to shut them down. Keep the noise to a minimum. No bone-headed extra outs. Let me remind you all that their offense is just as dangerous as ours with men on base. This is a team that can make you pay for your mistakes. Remember, the pressure is on them. On offense, we just need to make their pitchers work, run the count, make them throw to us, and when they do, hurt them good.
Giradi has to be on the ball managing-wise, earlier in the season, where he was hopelessly punked in to making moves that made all of us question what type of manager he is. Even I called for his head at one point. But this is a different team since the Chicago series, don’t get me wrong, we’re playing great, but I still see some flaws.
Specifically, when we have runners on base looking for the long-ball to get them home. This has to be addressed BEFORE the playoffs.
But most of all, I want to see A-Rod go ballistic in this series. I know he’s been playing hurt since the surgery, and for that, he gets major props from me. But, for the love of God, he’s due. I don’t want him to disappear. I want him to have an opportunity to shut the steroid-screaming loudmouths up one and for all. I’ll be checking his stats through the series.
I agree with Durden. Game three is the only game I see as a nail-biter, a potential classic part two. However, C.C. has a very bad habit of getting hit early and often. If he can set the tone right off the bat, there’s nothing the Sox can do about it. I can’t wait for this series to start, man!
I’ll be happy with two out of three, but will have a big smile on my mug if we sweep. I have a LOT of Red Sox fans at my job. I have to take their abuse daily.
For you Greg and the rest of the Bomber faithful, just sit back and enjoy this one. It’s going to be fun to watch.
See you in Beantown!
just need one or two... the pitching matchups favor us, so i think we should take 2 of 3
I agree with the first comment. As long as we don't get swept we are in good shape. If we take only one game then at least we are 5.5 games up obviously bending what Boston does tonight against Toronto. 5.5 up with 39 games to play is a sizable lead.
If you consider that they have no more games to play at Fenway and their record against the rest of the league is better than the Sux.
You know, I expect good answers from you guys, but in fact, I got great answers. This may not be the most popular blog, but you guys know your stuff. Great stuff all around.
All we really have to do is a void being swept. However, I smell blood and would like a sweep of our own. Kick a dog when they're down!
they need to have their bats at top notch. and not give the Sox any scoring opprtunities whatsoever.
they need to take 2 out of three, but a sweep will be SWEEETTT!!!!!!!
Great post HarlemKnight. Loved the way you previewed the series. You really know your stuff; you should be writing a column, if you aren't already.
Game One is the key game guys. The best the Sox can do if we win game one is be six games out @ about midnight on Sunday. It's a confidence building road game in playoff like conditions for the Bombers, too!
Obviously as long as they don't get swept, the Yanks are still in good shape.
But I think the Yanks need to step on their throats and crush their spirit.
Two out of three would be great but a sweep would take the life out of them and potentially throw them into a tailspin.
I know anon, maybe he should be writing for Sliding Into Home.
Sox are in red-hot hitting form right now so the Yanks better bring their A game or the AL East will be a race again.
1 out of 3. 2 of 3 would be fantastic, a sweep might well knock the Red Sox into a spin that could cost them the WC. However, 1 of 3 is what we "need." Getting swept would be bad, if only because we would have doubts about that craphole fenway.
samantha is a spamming whore.
Yes, she is.
Yanks need to do two things. 1. Mostly importantly NOT GET HURT. 2. Just prove you can win one game and under any circumstances DON NOT GET SWEPT.
*forgive my typos. I'm at work hiding.
