When CC Says No More, It Means No More (sort of)

From Peter Abraham:

When CC Sabathia gave up the four runs in the third inning, he stalked into the dugout and told Jose Molina, “That’s all they get.”

I asked Molina if he believed him.

“His face was mad,” Molina said. “I did believe him. He was pissed off.”

While I love stuff like this, and I admire that kind of moxie and the fact that he backed it up (besides the one run charged to him in the 8th), today's start was still not what I was expecting coming into today's critical game. Five runs on ten hits in seven+ innings is not the work of an ace. They won, and all can be forgiven, I guess, but the Yankees gave this guy a huge contract and it wasn't so he'd give them four runs on ten hits. Anyway, I'll have more to say about this later in the game summary, but for now I'm interested to see what you guys think of CC's bold words and his mediocre start.

Like you I expected much more from CC today so I couldn't care less about what he said or didn't say.

Sabathia has been pretty average so far this season. He has a 3.95 era not what you are expecting from the 161 million dollar ace. But he does eat innings which is valuable for the bullpen. Today was a good example of that. He had to go 7 and he did because the bullpen was worn down from the last two games.

Kay and Leiter need to stop calling Hughes cutter a slider. That is his cutter. If Hughes devolops his changeup he will be a very good starter. He's already got a 4 seem fastball, cutter and curve. He learns how to throw a decent change he will be very good front end starter.

Anon 1, Fair enough, I can see how you'd feel that way.

Anon 2, I know, I'm getting sick of that myself. You would think they'd know what was going on, you know, cause this is their job.

CC really hasn't been all that bad this year so far so i wouldnt exactly say he's had a mediocre start, he has won 11 games. Now, i realize the amount of money the yankees gave him should mean that he pitches perfect every start, but that just wont happen. Aside from maybe 2 or 3 starts, CC has gone into the 7th or 8th inning which saves the bullpen from tiring out over the course of a series, too.

It was good to see CC bear down today. He didn't have his best stuff but he managed to keep the game in hand unlike AJ did yesterday.

Imagine what the comments would be like if the Yanks hadn't come back to win this game and avoid a 4-0 sweep? CC will get a pass - this time - thanks to the offense. But the fact of the matter is that two of our four starters coughed up a three-run lead in a matter of moments. And if CC and co. don't pitch a lot better against the Sox this week, we could be looking at an 0-12 record against Boston, judging by their batting against the Orioles today.

Dave, the mediocre start I was referring to was just today's start.

The more I think about it, the more I feel Cashman dropped the ball not getting Jarrod Washburn.

The yanks in the stretch run of the season will be skipping some of Joba starts in order for him not to go over his innings limit. They already lost Wang. This is a championship level team. If they got Washburn he would of been a solid number 3. He was the last piece I would of not traded Hughes, Chamberlain or Montero. But I think I would of traded Austin Jackson for Washburn.

If they got Washburn the yanks would be the favorites to win the world series. And then skipping some of Joba starts would of not been that big of a deal.

Postseason: Sabathia, Burnett, Washburn & Pettitte as starters with Hughes, Chamberlain & Mariano in the bullpen would be deadly.

I still don't see the Yanks having a starter that you know you will win his game 90% of the time. Burnett can string good games against bad teams -- but do the Yanks have someone that can shut-down Boston, the Angels or the ChiSox?

Burnett has always pitched well against al east team. He owns the yanks, red sox and rays. Hopefully he gets back to dominanting the red sox this upcoming series.

I think he's given us a good ammount of innings, hes been ok thus far, but hes done much better than a lot of our big free agent pitchers we get...

CC can get us to play off then take us to # 27, thats all i care about!

CC has been mediocre thus far, let's be serious. I don't really care that he's gone 6+ innings in blah blah blah many starts because he gives up as many if not more runs than the bullpen normally would during those innings. If it were down to the game that decided whether or not we made the playoffs, I would want either Joba or A.J. starting. Period.
