WP - Alfredo Aceves (10-1)
LP - Ricky Romero (11-7)
I for one was not at all unhappy to see Sergio Mitre miss a start. However, his replacement, Chad Gaudin, hardly fared any better. Still, they managed to outscore the other team and that's all that matters. Chalk another game up in the win column for the Yankees and slice another game off of the magic number.
Early on it looked like this was going to be an easy win for the Yankees. They scored four runs in the first couple innings with Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada delivering the big blows. Gaudin had a 4-0 lead to work with and look up to the task of protecting it for the first three shutout innings. He tired in the fourth though and let the Jays back into the game. He loaded the bases with only one out on a walk, single, and a hit by pitch. Raul Chavez got Toronto their first run of the game and another would be added on a sac fly. Gaudin could have escaped with a chance at a win then but gave up another hit to Aaron Hill which brought in Alfredo Aceves. Ace did his job and struck out the only batter he faced that inning.
With the lead in danger, the Yanks tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth. Ricky Romero lead off the inning with back to back walks and both A-Rod and Posada would drive in runners before Romero got out of the jam. At this point the score was 7-3 and the Jays only would get one more shot at the game. Travis Snider led off the sixth with a double off of Aceves, who was in his 4th inning of work by now. Next came a passed ball that allowed him to advance to third. Raul Chavez and Marcos Scutaro would both hit doubles as well that brought the tying run to the plate. Ace got the next two outs though and that was really the end of the game.
Posada's two-run homer in the ninth was his 20th of the season, which makes seven Yankees with 20 or more homers to tie the MLB record for most players on one team with 20 or more homers. To say this team is balances in a gross understatment.
David Robertson, Brian Bruney, and Damaso Marte would mow down the Jays to finish off the last few innings and the offense tacked on a couple more to make sure Hughes got the night off. Another day, another win for these Yankees. Things are looking good.

The Yankees seem keen on having back end starters like Joba, Mitre and Gaudin only stick around for 3 innings. Shouldn't Aceves be the one to take the fifth spot and slowly get stretched out? Seems like he'd be a better option than Gaudin or Mitre.
marte's looking good
Who was that lefty pitcher and what have they done with Marte? :o)
If Marte has turned it around, the Yanks could be scary good. I really like Robertson and it's good to see that he is becoming a real cog in the bullpen machine.
"I for one was not at all unhappy to see Sergio Mitre miss a start."
I don't understand the Mitre hate. The guy was pitching a one-hitter before getting hit with that ball. No one is asking for him to be an ace, and while he hasnt been very good in a lot of his starts, he seems to be slowly getting better. I don't think he deserves the flak he's getting when we're not asking him for much. It's a shame he missed this start because I'd actually love to see this guy succeed.
I didn't care much for Mitre either, but the thing about him is he showed improvement in each of his starts. That was one positive sign. Then he threw the one-hitter. So for now he's off my s*** list.
Being a spot starter is tough. Even Aceves stuggled in Minnesota.
Aceves is being used in the right role. He is a modern day Ramiro Mendoza. He is very valuable working multiple innings in the bullpen his 10-1 record shows that.
I give Mitre a little slack because he is only 13 1/2 months off TJ surgery. He was never a great pitcher anyway and he has been serviceable. His last outing was great.
Of course I do reserve the right to blast him if he pitches like crap.
Mitre has pretty decent stuff. He was basically the 9th starter this year for the yanks. People need to cut him some slack he is just coming off TJ.
But if he has a couple of good starts he will get a starting job next year probably in the nl.
At lease Mitre pitches more innings than some of the other starters. Time for Mitre rules!
The yanks are monotoring Joba innings. I dont understand why people are so upset over that. Look at Baltimore they are shutting down some of there starters because of innings.
The Mendoza analogy is a good one, but remember that Ramiro would get his share of starts when someone was injured.
