Carig Breaks Down the Potential Playoff Matchups

Wondering which AL Central team is the better matchup for the Yankees in the ALDS? If so the Star-Ledger's Marc Carig breaks down both potential matchups between the with Twins and Tigers for you. He doesn't conclude which team in the better matchup, but he does explain why each are good and bad for the Yanks.

Me? I'm done with that kind of stuff. In 2006 I wanted to play the Tigers because the Yankees played so well against them during the regular season, and the same went for the Indians in 2007. Well, you know how those two series worked out, so from now on I'm just going to sit back and wait. But that won't stop me from asking you who'd you rather face. Go check out Carig's aritcle and then come back and let me know who you'd rather face in the comments section below.

I agree Greg. The Yanks have to beat whoever comes their way. I have no rooting interest other than the Yankees winning.

A little off topic but I really hope that KC wins tonight so that the yanks win 2 out of 3, they can clinch against the sox. Not that they can't sweep but two out of three has a much better chance.

Another completely ridiculous Red-Sox biased article from ESPN. If the Red Sox do not win the world series they should fire the entire baseball tonight staff.

Wow, yeah, that article was pretty silly. Andy's health should be questioned for missing one start, while Dice-K is golden after missing the better part of the year?

Once again, Jobba the Kruk proves that he does not think before he posts this nonsense.

I think there's very little to choose between the Yanks, Red Sox and Angels. These three clubs may have slightly different strengths and weaknesses. The Sox and Angels have more depth to their starting rotations but the Yankees have a more reliable bullpen and closer. But the one thing all three teams have in common is they can hit from one to nine. The big advantage of winning the division is you only have to beat one of them, rather than two. I don't want to underestimate the strength of the Tigers - they have good starting pitching - but they don't carry the same threat with the bat and their pen in suspect. The only "advantage" they will have against the Yanks is the fact that first round of the playoffs is best-of-five rather best-of-seven.

I agree with Greg, be careful what you wish for, you may get it!

I am rooting for the Twins but not necessarily to go to the playoffs.

I hope that the Tigers and Twins have to play hard all the way to the end and wear themselves out before the playoffs even start. Hopefully even a playoff game between the two.

Then I could care less who wins.

going off what Bruce said- I agree.
The Yanks, Halos, and Sawx are all evenly matched, with different strengths and weaknesses. I feel like going through rosters to see who's got the advantage- and I'll put in the Tigers for fun (hmmm I wonder)
C:
1. Yankees- Posada and Molina are the most complete
2. Red Sox- Martinez would be the best catcher in the league, if he could catch
3. Halos
4. Tigers
1B:
1. Yankees- Tex. Need I say more?
2. Tigers- Miggy Cabrera is pretty good.
3. Halos- Kendry Morales is a great player
4. Red Sox- this is even when Youk is there
2B:
Tie1. Yanks and Sox- Cano and Pedroia are both great players
3. Tigers
4. Halos
3B:
1. Yanks
2. Angels
3. Tigers
4. Sox- this is only when Youk is there
SS:
1. Yanks- the only all star SS in this group of teams initials are DJ
2. Angels
3. Red Sox
4. Tigers
LF:
1. Red Sox- give J. Bay credit, guys a beast.
2. Yanks- Damon
3. Angels- Juan Rivera
4. Tigers- C. Guillen
CF:
1. Angels- Hunter is still good.
2. Tigers- Granderson
3. Red Sox- Ellsbury
4. Yanks- Cabrera/Gardner
RF:
1. Angels- Abreu/Guerrero
2. Yanks- Swisher
3. Red Sox- JD Drew
4. Tigers- Ordonez
DH:
1. Red Sox- Papi is a playoff god, I have to admit.
Tie 2. Yanks, Tigers, Angels-
The way Matsui, Huff, and Guerrero have played this year is pretty even.
Top 4 Starters (this is Gaudin/Joba- I dont even know):
1. Red Sox
Tie 2. Angels and Tigers
4. Yanks- CC and Pettitte are reliable, but Burnett could blowup, and god knows about the last spot.
Bullpen (no closer):
1. Yanks
2. Red Sox
3. Tigers
4. Angels
Closer:
1. Yanks
2. Red SOx
3. Angels
4. Tigers- Fernando Rodney????
Bench:
1. Yanks
2. Angels
3. Red Sox
4. Tigers
Managing:
1. Red Sox
2. Angels
Tie 3. Tigers and Yanks- Girardi can be good, but he does somethings sometimes that make you go WTF?????????? Jim Leyland is very good.

Overall:
Yanks over Tiger in 4.
Sox over Angels in 5.
Yanks over Sox in 6/7... im not that good.
WS:
Yanks over Cards in 6.

I know im getting a little ahead of myself, but I love this year's team.

Like every October it will come down to the team who gets hot at the right time. Maybe I should say the team who's starting pitching gets hot at the right time.

JoeNYy said...

I'd agree with the starting pitching part, but then again---- if you score 8 runs a game for everygame, a starter letting up 5 runs doesn't matter.

Greg Cohen said...

You don't win that way in October, at least I've never seen it done. If this team can, that's fine with me, but I've always believe you win with pitching in October.

JoeNYy said...

I know that, I've never seen it either. I'm just saying- 8 runs can never hurt. lol

Greg Cohen said...

Can't disagree with you there. How'd you dinner come out yesterday?

JoeNYy said...

Oh my god, it was delishhh.... Meatballs were great...
I'm making lasagna on Oct. 3rd or 4th (lol), after I get my cast off.

Greg Cohen said...

Cast? What happened?

JoeNYy said...

Oh yeah, didnt tell you. I broke my wrist in Aug- jumping off a pool deck, 4 months after breaking my other wrist in basball.

JoeNYy said...

yeah, i know

Joe, thought your ratings were a little Yankee-biased when I first read them but on the second read, I can't argue with too many. Think the key stat may be managing and the fact that Girardi is so inexperienced may count against him. Many of these October games come down to the final few innings and few turn into blowouts. Girardi has two aces in Mo and Hughes, but how will he shuffle the rest of the pack?
