News & Notes

- The Yanks are 40-14 since the All-Star break. They've also won 53 of their last 72, and at 91-51 they have the best record in all of baseball. They currently lead Boston by 8.5 games in the AL East. They also lead the Angels by 5 games for the best record in baseball. Their magic number to clinch the AL East is 14.

- A.J. Burnett has made 12 starts against the Orioles and is 9-1 with a 5.00 ERA. This year he's 2-0, with a 5.09 ERA in three starts.

- At 49-21 the Yankees have the best home record in baseball.

- Johnny Damon sits again with back and hamstring tightness. He could pinch hit today, and will probably get back in the lineup tomorrow.

- Mariano Rivera has converted 39-of-40 save opportunities this season. He's also converted 34 straight saves which is the longest such streak in the Majors, and the longest of Mo's hall of fame career. He's allowed just one run over his last 31 innings pitched.

- The Yankees a 12-4 against the Orioles this season.

Is Girardi trying to lose these games by putting out ridiculous lineups? Hairston batting No. 2? Give me a break. Yes, I know we have a substantial lead in the division but I still believe we should be going all out to win our home games, especially in front of our great fans. Hope Hariston, Duncan and Molina prove me wrong. Go Yanks!

Greg Cohen said...

This is another reason why Girardi's bullpen decisions bothered me so much. I had a feeling coming off the long night last night that today's lineup would be an embarrassing joke. They may thing the division is wrapped up and it basically is, but they could use a few more games on their best record in baseball lead. They can't piss away these games.

Brian Danuff said...

Well at least Hairston is doing the little things right. He bunts Jeter over to 3rd and Mark Teixeira is up.

Brian Danuff said...

So, what's up guys?

Brian Danuff said...

1-0 Yanks.

Greg Cohen said...

Hey YB, whats up?

bruceb said...

Yep, nice to have the lead. But if Damon had been playing, that might have been a four or five-run inning.

Greg Cohen said...

More garbage from Burnett. I'm slowly starting to hate this guy.

Greg Cohen said...

And now it's 6-1 O's thanks to Burnett the mental midget.

Brian Danuff said...

Shit. Now I think I've made my mind up - Pettitte starts game 2.

Later guys.

Greg Cohen said...

It's definitely Pettitte. He's the second best pitcher on the staff, regardless of stuff. Sometimes a pitcher's moxie is more valuable than stuff.

Anonymous said...

Assuming we maintain our lead in home field I would still go AJ in game 2. He has been better at home whereas Pettite has been better on the road.

Greg Cohen said...

Who cares how good he was at home? He's stunk lately. This mental case will get destroyed in the playoffs. As few starts as possible is what the Yankees should try to set up with Burnett.

Greg Cohen said...

And now with our C lineup in there a comeback will be even harder. Remember folks, the lead for best record could be chopped to four today. That's really not a lot.

Anonymous said...

Its not that I disagree with that because its true but eh, I would still rather have Andy going on the road. I still think AJ is more likely to succeed at home and i think he has 0 chance on the road.

Wow Kay is a real dickhead. How is he saying that yankees fans didn't real appericiate Jeter. Derek has been treated like a legend for the last couple of years.

I know Burnett is pitching bad today but he is ripping Burnett start against Boston in the 15th inning game talking about the walks. Burnett was brilliant in that game moron.

bruceb said...

This is what happens when you start messing with a winning formula...you're telling the players that the game isn't important; that the result doesn't really matter. It's disrespectful to teams like the Orioles, who are still capable of kicking your ass on any given day. I'm not saying that's the cause for AJ imploding again but, to me, it's sending out the wrong signals. As Greg pointed out, the same applies with the bullpen. We should be going flat out to clinch the division and then resting our key players. The operative word is THEN. By the way, nice bunt by Hairston in the first inning. What relevance does that have to the game now??? We wasted the chance of a big inning and the score might be very different now.

Greg Cohen said...

I see what you're saying Anon.

As for Kay, Yankees fans have always loved Jeter.

Liam Gallagher said...

I like todays lineup. You give Damon a extra day. Posada caught most of last night, and why not throw as many rights as you can in the lineup when your facing a lefty.

Greg Cohen said...

Fair enough, but they don't need to load the lineup with righties who stink.

Liam Gallagher said...

True. Including Molina. He blows at the plate.

Liam Gallagher said...

Whats up Greg anyway?

Greg Cohen said...

Nothing much, Joe Girardi lack of a killer instinct is beginning to worry me.

Liam Gallagher said...

Me too.

Has Burnett stunk or what. I hope he's a playoff pitcher.

bruceb said...

Damon needs an extra day's rest? These guys get half the year off. How much vacation time do most of us get? Three weeks. C'mon, let's keep it real here. Today's lineup stinks...as we've just seen in the third inning. Molina produces a miracle by getting an infield hit and we still don't score.

Greg Cohen said...

Actually, the average American gets 8 days off a year. And no, I'm not kidding.

Liam Gallagher said...

Damons back hurts. We need him healthy for the playoffs.

Liam Gallagher said...

Same with Matsui. Wow, not a lot of days offs. I get the weekend of because I have school.

Greg Cohen said...

Weekends don't count. I mean like days off when you would normally be working -- paid vacation.

Anonymous said...

they should've put in cervelli

Liam Gallagher said...

The only thing that I would have changed about this lineup is switching Molina with Cervelli. At least he makes contact.

Still, we have the best record in baseball. We will most likely get the home field in the playoffs. And with a long season, this is why you have Sept. call ups, is to give the main starters some rest.

Liam Gallagher said...

oh.

Greg Cohen said...

Matsui or Posada should be DHing.

bruceb said...

I guess I'm just a worrier by nature. I keep having this vision of the Red Sox winning 15 in a row and beating us to the AL East title. I know it's not likely to happen, but with their schedule, don't expect them to lose too many between now and the end of the season. I didn't expect us to sweep the Rays in a four-game series but, at the same time, I don't expect us to lose a series at home to the Orioles. Burnett needs to pull his finger out between now and the end of the regular season because right at the moment, he's embarrassing himself and his team.

Anonymous said...

You make a very good point Liam.

Liam Gallagher said...

Burnett does need to get his act together.

Liam Gallagher said...

Greg, I was reading the news and notes on the game thread and I saw an error.

"Johnny Damon sits again with back and hamstring tightness. He could pinch and will probably get back in the lineup tomorrow."

Greg Cohen said...

Check again.

Anonymous said...

Lets see this team can't beat Toronto (split series 2-2 which is a FAIL) and they can't beat the Orioles. Toronto and Baltimore are bottom feeders in the league.

And, you think this team will win in the playoffs? Dont make me laugh. Everybody beats Toronto and Baltimore, EVERYONE. These teams stink.

But, hey Derek Jeter got his 8,000th hit. Wow.

bruceb said...

And then nothing happened...would be nice is someone could actually give us a ray of hope, no matter how small. This is pathetic. If Girardi doesn't field his strongest available lineup tomorrow then he needs shooting. This series reminds of the one against the Nationals earlier in the season. Lousy opponents, lousy weather, lousy performances by the Yanks.

Greg Cohen said...

This game has been embarrassing.

Anonymous said...

I dont care if Burnett pitched a gem today, this game today has no impact one way or the other of how Burnett pitches in the alds.

Greg Cohen said...

Besides the 7th, Burnett hasn't pitched well in a while.

Anonymous said...

You can say the same for any rotation. Verlander has a 5.86 ERA in postseason play, and Edwin Jackson is an unknown, and Porcello is a rookie. Washburn has been horrible.

Beckett is up and down, Wakefield is hurt, Byrd sucks, and Dice-k is hurt and Buccholz is an unknown.

The only team that I feel will be the yanks biggest competition to get to the world series is the Angels.

Anonymous said...

What an odd game for Burnett he gives up 6 in one inning and puts up zero in 6 innings.

bruceb said...

Sadly, it's the six in one that count. No doubt we will have to listen to Joe G telling us after the game about what good stuff he had, but for one "bad inning." Sounds familiar?

Greg Cohen said...

Well that blown opportunity should just about wrap this one up.

bruceb said...

Feel sorry for the fans who paid good money to watch this garbage of a game today. Least you and I got to see DJ make history last night.

Anonymous said...

The team kind of quit after the 2nd inning. Girardi sent a bad message to the team when he batted Jerry Hairston in the two hole.

Pettitte last two starts he has not pitched very well. There is no starter besides Sabathia with a below 4 era. The starting pitching seems to team the teams weakest point.

Greg Cohen said...

When you instill a sense of accomplishment in a team that hasn't accomplished jack, you can blow a big lead. That's why the Mets blew two huge leads - they felt they already had won. This team needs to keep the peddle to the floor and put this thing away. Then they can start giving two or three guys off a game.

bruceb said...

That's what I've been saying for the last two weeks, yet every time I do, I get rubbished by Yankees fans saying our lead is insurmountable. No, it is not. In the words of the great Yogi, It ain't over til it's over. Over the last two days, we've been embarrassed by two rookie pitchers and a Minor League batting lineup (Markakis and one or two others excepted). The Yanks might not find it so easy just to slip back into top gear when CC pitches tomorrow.

@ Greg

I agree I want to see the regular lineup out there. When was the last time you saw that? The yanks have off every thursday now. They have not clinched anything. Obvious you have to give Jorge a day off when you have an night game/day game the next game. And also continue with the Gardner/Melky platoon like you been doing all year.

But I dont want to see Hairston batting number 2, Duncan being the DH you can do that stuff after you clinch.

Capone said...

Lastnight's loss I can understand. But today was kinda ridiculous. I don't wanna see Shelley Duncan in any lineup until after we've clinched the East. Same goes for Jerry Hairston in the 2 hole. As for A.J Burnett, well, the results speak for themselves
