WP - Mariano Rivera (2-2)
LP - Dan Wheeler (4-4)
Nick Swisher made it 13 walk-off wins for the Yankees this season when with one out in the ninth he lined a 1-0 pitch from Dan Wheeler just over the right field wall giving the Yankees a 3-2 win. It was Swisher's second homer of the game, and the 26th of the season. Coming into tonight's contest Swisher had just three homers at the new stadium and had not hit one since June 8th, also against the Rays. In fact. four of his five homers in the Bronx have come against Tampa.
The Yankees got on the board early when Swisher hit his first bomb. Then Alex Rodriguez made it 2-0 with a big two-out RBI single in the sixth. A-Rod has been coming up with a lot of big hits lately, and now has at least one RBI in six of his last seven games, and a total of 13 over his last nine.
Chad Gaudin started for the Bombers and had his best game of the season as a Yankee. Over the first six innings he held Tampa to no runs on just four hits and a walk, while striking out six. Then he ran out of gas in the seventh. Evan Longoria led off with a solo homer to cut the Yankees lead to 2-1. Then Ben Zobrist singled and Pat Burrell walked before Joe Girardi went to the pen.
Damaso Marte retired the only batter he faced, the right-handed Gabe Kapler. Brian Bruney then came in, also for one out, and got Dioner Navarro to ground into a force for out number two. Phil Coke got the call for the final out. He walked Willy Aybar to load the bases, but then go Akinori Iwamura to ground out to short to end the inning.
Phil Hughes came in for the eighth and did something he hadn't done since going to the pen and blew a lead. Jason Bartlett took the first pitch he saw deep into the seats in left to tie the game. Carl Crawford then singled, but Hughes settled down and got Longoria to fly out and Zobrist to hit into an inning-ending doubleplay.
Mariano Rivera came in for the ninth and needed just 12 pitches for a 1-2-3 inning. He got the win, improving his record to 2-2.
Derek Jeter went 0-for-4 with three strike outs and remains three hits shy of Gehrig's record.
At 90-50 the Yankees are now a season-high 40 games over .500 and have dropped their magic number to 15. They go for the four-game sweep tomorrow night with Joba Chamberlain taking the hill. Right-hander Jeff Niemann will start for Tampa.

I called it!!!
I was at my fantasy football draft up at my brother's house in Connecticut.
I hadn't heard any of the game until I got into the car for the hour drive back home to Long Island.
Just as I was pulling up to the toll on the Throgs Neck Bridge, as Swish stepped in for the second pitch of the at bat.
I had a feeling he was going deep so I did my Johns Sterling impersonation to my buddy and called out "It's Swishalicious!"
No sooner had I said it when bang!!!
Sterling went into the call!!!
I howled and cranked up the radio and I rolled down the window as we were entered the toll plaza for all to hear.
Nice win by the Yanks and the magic number is down to 15!!!!
As I said earlier, there's really nothing you can complain about right now if you're a Yankee fan. Lastnight was just the latest reminder that this Yankee team is destined for something special this year
Gaudin was a nice pickup by Cashman. The yanks got him for nothing. Looks like he will make the postseason roster over Mitre.
The DP Cano and Pena turned in the eighth was one of the prettiest I've seen-great pick up and throw by Cano don't ya know. Mo looks rested and his cut action and location looked alot sharper. These days off might be a good thing for him. Go Yanks - and anyone and everyone playing the Suxs
Cashman is probably taking a big sigh of relief for his work this year. A lot of big name pickups have of course helped but it's a lot of the smaller names that he has picked that have fit in well and made this a complete team to be reckoned with. Good job Cash, I was on the fence before if he should continue making decisions for this team.

Cash made a lot of small moves that helped this team out. I think the Swisher trade is very underrated, he turn Wilson Betemit into Swish and Wilson has done absolutely nothing since he was traded. Gaudin was a nice little pick up that come playoff time if someone goes only 5 innings or so I think you can trust him for the 6th(Ace for the 7th, Hughes for the 8th and Mo in the 9th) . The moves to get Hairston and Hinske were also great moves which provide depth at the the corners and the OF. People look at the big 3 that were signed but forget what he did during the season that helped.
Just a question, anyone remember when Swish pitched in Tampa? that seems like last season already!!
That was a nice DP indeed!
The only bummer in this thread is the mention of that fish-faced Yankees radio clown. Funny, but when I'm up in NYC (as I am many times during the season) I never listen to the games on the radio but merely check the scores on my BlackBerry.... But no matter.
A great win last night. I watched the game on Direct TV and also had a hunch that someone would win it for us in the bottom of the 9th. Way to rock and roll, Yanks!

Yeah... that does seem so long ago. The Let Swish pitch chants after when Wang pitched were funny.
This needs to be an offical MLBlog
it is amazing that Hughes era is still above 3. That just shows how high his era was before he went to the pen.
