First of all, I don't know if it will work. Hughes needs time to extend himself and get back to being able to throw 5 or more innings. And with the way he has also settled into the setup man role, why mess with anything?
As for Joba he breifly showed how good he could be as a starter after the All-Star break, and it's clear that he's still learning how to be a starter. The ever changing "Rules" have slowed down that process, and the last thing Joba needs is having his role changed again.

The way Joba is pitching the LAST thing the Yanks need to do is see if he can be the bridge to Mo as we head toward the playoffs. Joba will be in the pen in October, so what's the diff?
As of now the plan is to have Joba start in the playoffs. That's why they're only letting him go 3 innings a start now.
writers from ESPN really like to make stupid comments and think themselves have found some special insights that nobody else have lol
Neyer a couple of month ago said Hughes was not a starting pitcher.
Putting Joba in the bullpen is silly. Joba has been struggling in 3 inning starts that is more like pitching from the bullpen than starting. Just because you put him in the bullpen that doesn't make his fastball command magically become great.
Joba and Hughes are the yankees best starting pitching prospects. I never understood why so many people want the yankees best young starters in the bullpen. People have no patience let them learn to pitch.
Yanks have plenty of good young bullpen arms. Robertson, Melancon, Dunn, Kroenke etc etc.
I wouldn't touch Phil Hughes. That's crazy.
As for Joba, I am very curious how he will pitch Wednesday because I am more & more of the opinion he is gassed. Here's my question-- what happens if he continues to 'stink' from now until the end of the season? If he is truly tired, the Yankees are taking a risk by continuing to run him out there. Plus, the Yankees may not even need a 4th starter in the ALDS.
I think Anon is right. The bullpen is solid and there's no reason for Joba to be there. I think too many people are expecting him to throw near perfect games as a starter who is just learning the big leagues. I dont agree with this three inning nonsense the Yankees are pulling with him. If he's going to start in the postseason he should have an arm ready to go at least 6 innings, not 3.

Neyer should always follow the first basic rule of journalism...
Never post an article when stoned.
You don't do something like that in September. You have a better chance of screwing up Hughes and Joba than fixing the problem with Joba.
Just to clarify my position on Hughes--
"I wouldn't touch Phil Hughes"-- THIS season.
Phil Hughes is a starting pitcher, and should be in the rotation next season.
Hopefully next season we'll have a more relaxed Mark Melancon who's not afraid to throw strikes to MLB hitters. Add a 'hopefully' better Bruney & a healthy Marte and a more experienced David Robertson (this year's secret weapon!) to Mo and Coke and that's a big-time bullpen. Then you have a starting 5 of CC, AJ, Andy (bring him back!), Joba and Hughes, and the Yankees should go 162-0. Maybe better!
I still think they should bring back Wang. If healthy, that guy is a heck of a good pitcher.
At least for this year it should stay...I don't buy the whole joba rules for his poor performances. In the beginning of the year he has pitched the same way in his poor starts. It's not any different now besides he is limited on some days. He still throws way too many pitches and walks too many.
I agree on Wang, but I think he's supposed to be unavailable until next summer. It'll take him the rest of 2010 to get back in shape, and I don't see him coming out of the bullpen. Unless he can be back sooner, plus unless one of the starters go down with an injury or something, I don't think we'll see Wang at 100% until 2011. I'm not sure if he'll even be on the roster at that time.
