Who should be the Yankees no. 2 starter in the playoffs?

I created a new poll for you guys. The question, as you probably figured out already, is which Yankee should be the number two starter in the playoffs? The options are Andy Pettitte and A.J. Burnett. Right now I'd have to go with Pettitte. You can answer below or vote in the poll on the right sidebar. Thanks.

Right now, Andy's won the job. He's been consistent, you know what to expect from him and he doesn't beat himself which is more important.

Burnett is too streaky, beats him self b/c he wont drop what happened and is liable to hang the curve or leave the fastball in the heart of the plate.

For the looks of it, having a Hard throwing Lefty, and a finesse Lefty back to back would be a, forgive my language, mind-fuck, to the other teams.

Joba Chamberlain.

Ok anon, I'll add a third option to the poll for other.

I think Joba belongs in the 4th starter debate, the guy really doesn't have number 2 Stuff at the moment, maybe next year.

I agree Durden.

Someone yesterday proposed CC-Andy-Aj-Gaudin, I really think thats the way to go.

Whoa people actually liked my idea yesterday? People were flipping out when I proposed Gaudin.

AP people, AP all the way.

Although I believe that Andy has done the better job and deserves the number 2 spot in the playoffs, it should go to AJ. My reason being that I feel the Yanks are going to have home field advantage in the playoffs, and I would feel much more comfortable pitching AJ at home and Andy at an away ballpark.

With all that said if the Yankees drop the first game Andy gets the ball game two.

Joba should be the 2nd starter, Burnett 3 and Pettitte game 4.

Joba owns the tigers and has been dominant against them this year.

Thats right, I forgot how Joba dominated them twice this year.

Honestly based off this year. You want Sabathia and Burnett to pitch at home. Pettitte and Joba to pitch on the road.

I would take the 5 game series where you have to use 4 starters. By doing that the tigers will not be able to ride Verlander the entire series.

Game 3 would be Pettitte and an inexpericed rookie in Porcello. And game 4 would have Joba who has dominanted the tigers against a hurt and ineffective Jarrod Washburn and then if you have game 5 you go to Sabathia.

If you take the 5 game series where you use 3 starter burnett will probably be pitching game 2 & 5. I dont trust Burnett pitching game 5.

Take the shorter series so you can go CC, Andy, AJ, Joba, CC

Oh crap Greg, you beat me to the punch! (LOL)

Gotta be CC & Andy 1 & 2 in the first round. I have heard some people say you don't want to go L-L-R in the first 3 games, but if you go CC-AJ-Pettitte, then you go L-L in games 3 & 4 anyway!

I want CC & Andy because in a 5 game series you need to put your best foot forward, PDQ! Plus, I can't trust AJ in a game 4 or 5. Then you keep Joba in reserve for the 6th-7th inning. That allows Joe to 'match up' in the 5th inning if need be & shorten the game. 'Shortening the game' is the crucial & deciding factor for the Yankees this postseason & why I believe they will be successful. BTW, I am assuming the Yankees select the 8-day option for the ALDS.

I see different viewpoints about the 8 or 7 day ALDS series selection here. There are pros & cons to this decision to be sure. But even though I respect Verlander, he will only pitch 2 games either way, and whether he is matched up with CC or Andy, I believe our starter will keep up with him & once we get into the Detroit bullpen, we're set. So I'm not afraid of Verlander. And having the extra day to keep our bullpen 100% rested means we have Joba-Hughes-Mo every game, shortening the game to 6 innings. That's awesome, and it will certainly affect how Leyland manages the game.

We're also assuming it'll be Detroit, not the Twinkies. There is still more season left.

Sorry Steve.

I'm really starting to hope the Twins make it. Their pitching doesn't scare me at all, while the Tigers does. I know I probably shouldn't say that, since the last two series I've gotten my wish (Detroit and Cleveland) and we lost.

SteveB said...

Greg, your last sentence is the one that bothers me most of all. Two years in a row I counted the ALDS as 'won' before the series even began, and we lost 'em both. Detroit has a far better starter, but y'know what? If it's Minnesota, we get Pavano 1 or 2 times and this guy is the proverbial 'bad penny'. I don't want to face him only because I think he is bad bad karma for the Yankees, just like Kenny Rogers.

Arggh, I still can't believe he handled the Yankees so easily in the 2006 ALDS!! Why did I have to remind myself of that?

Greg Cohen said...

lol I know what you mean Steve. Although it's pretty obvious from the ALCS start that Rogers was putting something on the ball.

If they lost the ALDS because of Carl Pavano I may never watch baseball again.

SteveB said...

I'm tellin' ya, Pavano is bad luck.

If the Twins make it, it is what it is... but I will be very uncomfortable about it, very uneasy.

SteveB said...

Here's another thought- the Twins' bullpen is better than Detroit's, which might neutralize our late-innings advantage somewhat.

SteveB said...

Maybe the best thing that could happen is for Minnesota to hang tough with Detroit to the end so the Tigers' ballplayers are exhausted going into the postseason.

Greg Cohen said...

Yea, you're probably right Steve. It seems that anyone the Yankees have played since 2004 plays their best baseball against us come October, so I'm just gonna hope for the Yankees to make it and go from there.

I would prefer to start Pettitte game 3 because he has much better numbers away from Yankee Stadium. That being said, if they drop the first game I would much rather have a playoff tested Pettitte, who always seems to come up big after a Yankees loss, pitching game 2 if the Yanks drop game 1.

It's a tough call. I don't envy Girardi for having to make that decision or whether or not to take the shorter or longer series.

I don't see what he big debate here is. To me its obvious. If we get home field advantage, CC starts game one, Burnett game two, Pettitte game three. Andy has been much better on the road and Burnett has been much better at home. You can;t really say its a small sample because its been all year. You kind of have to play the numbers game in the playoffs. If there evidence it'll give you a slight advantage, you have to do it.

YankeePride3, you want Burnett in game 5?

YankeePride3 said...

In the case, I am hoping there is no game five. Especially if CC is starting twice in the first four games. But yeah, I'd be fine with running Burnett out there game five. I mean, when its debatable that he's been your second best pitcher all season, its not like oh god were running Burnett out there. Yeah he's been inconsistent but its not like its Jaret Wright again.
