Yanks Call Up Freddy Guzman

Chad Jennings is reporting that the Yankees have called up outfielder Freddy Guzman. Anthony Claggett was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Jennings said this move caught every player in the SWB clubhous offguard. I assume he's being called up mainly to be a pinch-runner down the stretch, and then maybe get some starts after they clinch.

Here's some more on Guzman from Jennings:
As for Guzman, he has Brett Gardner-type speed. and he's quite obviously going to the big leagues to provide speed off the bench. Guzman came to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre less than two weeks ago, playing his first game on September 1. While I wasn't remotely expecting the Guzman move, you may remember that the Boston Red Sox made a similar move, adding speedy Joey Gathright to the Triple-A Pawtucket roster on August 30 only to call him up to Boston on September 1. Speed can be huge, and Guzman isn't likely to fill a 40-man spot beyond these final few weeks of the season.
The Yankees also sent Ian Kennedy back to Scranton, and he will be activated in time to start game two of the Governor's Cup final against Durham.

Nice move, all was good to have speed.

How was the game yesterday Greg?

Hey Liam, it was great, thanks. A nice three+ hours of tailgating and then a nice Giants win. All around good day.

Good for you. It was a good game.

It's finally about time they used that roster spot for something useful. Clagget is not ready for the bigs yet, but I have have hopes for him though.

I think Jackson should come up. Not because that he should and is our top prospects, but he may learn from guys like Jeter, A-Rod, Posada, and many more great hitters.

Greg Cohen said...

He might after the playoffs, along with Juan Miranda probably, but there's going to have to figure out a way to clear another roster spot.

They could cut, Brackham, Gracia, De La Rosa. OR BRUNEY

Wow too bad about Anthony Claggett. That sucks that he is going to miss the triple a playoffs. He was going to start.

I am confused.....

Can Guzman be on the postseason roster? Now that I think about it, I would think not, but there are those who are reporting he can be added.

Actually I was one of those, because I picked it up from Pete Abe who said-- "Girardi said it could be possible to have Gardner and Guzman on the same postseason roster."

Greg Cohen said...

Hey Steve, I didn't think so either, but apparently Girardi says he can. Not sure how that would work.

I just spoke with Chad Jennings over at the SWB blog. He said that the Yankees can easily get someone on the postseason roster in place of a DL-ed person. I still don't quite get it, but I'll go with Chad's interpretation. This roster/waiver stuff confuses me.

The other thing is why Claggett couldn't play for SWB just because he was removed from the Yankees' 40-man. You gotta DFA a player to get them off the 40-man, and that means they are gone. Bad timing for Claggett, a real shame, now he's a man without a country, though someone will pick him up I'm sure, or maybe Cashman has a trade in mind.

I dont like DFA a young pitcher for someone who is just going to be a pinch runner for two weeks.

Would be odd if he makes the playoff roster. What about Pena? Pena has nice speed and could be a pinch runner. Hairston role in the playoffs would be a pinch runner. How many pinch runners do you need?

SteveB said...

The difference is that Guzman is as fast as Gardner. It's all about keeping your options open.

SteveB said...

Maybe Gardner is the guy who won't make the postseason if Guzman works out.

I don't think so, but there's another option for you.

Liam Gallagher said...

I doubt it though Steve.

Liam Gallagher said...

I would think a pitcher would be cut if there bringing up Guzman.

Liam Gallagher said...

Yet another option.

SteveB said...

I'm just throwin' possibilities out there, Liam. Who know what they might be thinking.

Gardner is a lock for the postseason roster I dont think there is any doubt in that.

Maybe Hinskie or Hairston Jr wont be on the postseason. Hinskie (the the exception of the worldseries to pinch hit in the nl parks) and Hairston will be useless in the postseason.

Guzman will be a better pinchrunner than hairston.
