WP - Phil Hughes (6-3)
LP - Lance Cormier (2-2)
SV - Mariano Rivera (39)
Derek Jeter went 0-4 in today's game, so he didn't break, or tie Lou Gehrig's record of most hits by a Yankee. But the game was still very exciting, as CC Sabathia tossed another gem, and the Yanks won Game 1 of the day-night double-header 4-1 against the Rays.
Early on this game didn't look to promising for the Rays, as in the 1st inning with 2 outs, the AL home-run leader Carlos Pena got hit in the hand. He swung, so it still counted as a strike. He was in a lot of pain, but he stayed in there. But on the very next pitch, he checked his swing but he dropped his bat and felt excruciating pain, and immediately left the game. That's not a good sign when all you do is check your swing and you feel a lot of pain.
CC Sabathia pitched yet another great game, going 7 strong innings allowing just a run on 3 hits, striking out a season-high 10 and walking 3, the first time he walked 3 batters since July 18th. Phil Hughes then came in, but he walked Carl Crawford to lead off the inning. A threat to steal as always, Jorge posada signaled for the pitch-out, which was the perfect call as a good throw by Jorge nailed the speedy Crawford at 2nd, to take a little pressure off Hughes. He then got the final 2 outs of the inning for the hold.
Matt Garza went head-to-head with CC and it was really a pitchers duel until the eighth, when Nick Swisher led off with a walk. Then Mark Teixeira singled, but on an error he advanced to 2nd to put runners on 2nd and 3rd for A-Rod, who the Rays intentionally walked. That loaded the bases for Robinson Cano, who then stepped up and lofted a sac-fly, to put the Yanks ahead 2-1. Then Jorge Posada would line an RBI single down the line in right to make it 3-1, and finally Eric Hinske hit a sac fly as well to make it 4-1, which would be the final score.
So with the Yanks having a 4-1 lead, they brought in Mariano Rivera, making his first apperance since September 1st after battling a minor groin injury. He picked up where he left off and got 3 outs in the 9th, to nail down the win and Mo's 39th save of the year.
Good to see the Yankees come back from an ugly loss yesterday and win a nice game today. Derek Jeter may not have picked up a hit, but it was still a great game. The Red Sox lost 5-1 today, so our lead re-extends to 8.5 games and our magic number is trimmed down to 17 for the divsion, and 15 to clinch a playoff berth. So Game 1 of this doubleheader is out of the way, and Game 2 is almost here. It'll be A.J. Burnett going up against Andy Sonnanstine. Game time 7:05 p.m., and it will be televised on YES for local veiwers and MLB Network outside of New York. Go Yanks!

Good job on the game summary YB.
Great win Garza always pitches the yankee tough. This is like the games against Pedro. Sabathia matches Garza and then when Garza is out of the game the yanks get the runs off the bullpen.
Great game from the yanks. Amazing catch from Gardner. Cano made a great tag on Crawford. Swisher made a great baserunning play. This is the type of baseball you hope to get in october.
Yeah
Thanks.
I hope Joba is watching Garza pitch. They have similar velocity. Garza fastball goes anywhere from 91-96 mph very similar to Joba.
Difference is Garza has great fastball control he was hitting his spots today. The reason Joba been struggling lately he hasn't had very good commmand on his fastball. Once he gets great command on his fastball he will start pitching like he did right after the allstar break. Because Joba has some great secondary pitches.
Hopefully him and Dave Eiland can iron out his problems.
Very ture Anon.
With the Sox loss, the magic number is 17.
