I luckily missed tonight's game, (BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE) but looking at the box score it would appear that Joba Chamberlain has pitched himself off the postseason roster, and at the very least off the ALDS roster. But I personally don't want to see him on the mound for any game that had any meaning. Allowing three earned runs on seven hits in just 3.2 innings against the Royals is unacceptable. I don't care how meaningless the game was. The four walks just and 91 pitches make the start that much more embarrassing. Make Chad Gaudin the fourth starter in the postseason and wish Joba a nice offseason.
Again, I missed the game so I don't really know how things went down, but that line is just awful. Do you trust Joba in any kind of role come October? I don't. The guy can barely throw a strike when he needs to, so even having him come out of the pen leaves me weary.
At least most of the relievers pitched well tonight.
Offensively they were only able to muster up three runs on five hits, two of the hits coming from Derek Jeter, who also hit his 18th homer of the year. Nick Swisher also homered, a two-run shot for his 29th of the year.
The result of the game is meaningless, but Joba's performance was not. Joe Girardi has a tough decision to make, hopefully he makes the right one and decides not to go with Joba.

The Joba question is really really tough. He is so erratic. I can't help but wonder though-- if he was used as a 7th inning guy, something I have promoted, and you limit him to using only his 2 best pitches and let him air it out to 95mph again... can he be more effective? It is a very tough call.
Personally, I still think setup/closer is his ultimate destination and the Yankees are trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. I don't want to open that whole argument up again, but I don't get the thinking that somehow innings 1-6 are more important than innings 7-9, or that a 30-start pitcher is more important than a 60-game reliever. Not the way the game is played today. Obviously 200 effective innings is better than 70, but it's the kind of innings you get. And I believe with Joba you'll get 200 mediocre to good innings versus 70 lights-out innings. What's better?
I would give him a one inning tryout on Sunday, if he is good then use him as a 7th inning guy, if not he should be off the post season roster, Then the Yankees should either try to use him no more than 1 inning or trade him
I made these comments in last night's game thread when i got home from the Stadium.
"Well, I was at the game tonight and I have come to the conclusion that I think Joba should be left off the alds roster. He has no purpose. He won't get a start and he can't even be relied on to pitch out of the pen, so why waste a roster spot?
Joba has a ton of potential but unfortunately potential doesn't win games. He has proven time and time again that he is completely unreliable.
He can look great at times and at other times look like he is completely lost.
He is one of the most predictable pitchers that I have ever seen. You can guess what he is going to throw constantly.
I think a benching in the alds might actually make him pull his head out of his ass.
Right now if I had to have someone win an important game 4 in the ALCS, I can tell you that there is zero chance that I would start Joba. I have absolutely no faith in him winning a game.

Right now I have no confidence in him but I don't entirely blame him. A lot of you are really fair weather. You all were ready to send Pettitte packing now he's the second most reliable pitcher on the roster and you all want him back for one more year. You all thought Joba was the greatest thing since sliced bread, now you're all ready to run him out instead of demanding that this organization invest in who handles and develops pitching ,just as much as it invests in pitching itself. At some point Yankee development has to produce something better than great middle relief.

As for Joba, I wouldn't have a problem with Nutball's idea. In fact, they probably should do that. Better to know if he can still do it than not.
Danny, I'm not looking to run anyone out of town, I just don't trust him to start this year in the playoffs. Do you?
As for Pettitte, I always wanted him to come back this year, and knew he'd be a huge part of the rotation.
Everyone can agree that Joba has been a disappointment, but do we really think he has no value coming out of the pen? I think at this point Joba would be thrilled to get back to where he had the most success, simplify his approach, and "grip it and rip it". Hopefully the fourth starter debate is a moot issue and we only need 3 games.
I'm not sure what his value is out of the pen right now. That's why I agree with Nutball's suggestion. He should get an inning out of the pen just to show the Yanks what they have. I'd also like to see him come in at a point in the game where Tampa has their best hitters coming up. That should give us, and most importantly Joe Girardi, a better idea of what he can do.
I've been saying for 3 or 4 weeks now the Yankees cannot let Joba start in the post season. He's erratic, he's stubborn and he still has yet to learn how to pitch. Sure hes got the fastball, curve and slider but he throws the fastball too much and he's trying to catch the corners like he's Mike Mussina...he is not that type of pitcher.
If the Yankees are smart, going into Tampa they would try to get Joba 2 or 3 innings out of the bullpen. And let Gaudin take the ball in Game 4 of the CS and WS.
(Something I feel the Yankees should have done was when Joba was giving them the 3 inning outings, was to start Aceves. Since he can go 5 then bring Joba in for 3 innings. That way he was still getting work in and we would have had a look at him outta the pen. )

Yeah, who is looking to run Joba out of town? Having little confidence in him right not fair weather... it's realistic.
Yeah, I think they screwed with him too much but ultimately, he has to overcome things and he simply has not done that.
Nobody is saying that he can't pitch, or that his Yankee career is over but it's just that he has only one or two chances left to start this season and has shown an inability to have any consistency.
Maybe we should want him to pitch him in an important game and then we he gets his ass handed to him, we can just blame management because then at least we won't have to think we are fair weathered.
I guess I'm just not willing to blow smoke up my own ass and think that magically Joba is going to turn it around instantly. Next year he should have the chance to succeed all over again.
But short of a 3-0 lead in the ALCS or WS, I wouldn't hand him the ball.
Intelligent decisions ≠ fair weathered.
